On 8th October 1941, Stalin issued a secret order forming a female aviation unit. Known later as the 46th “Taman” Guards Night Bomber Aviation Regiment, a unit like this had never existed before.
Their operational record began at the Salsk Steppes and the Don battles and ended in Nazi Germany. Flying PO-2 night bombers or ‘mules’, these brave female pilots flew harassment bombing and precision bombing missions, which successfully destroyed the enemy’s river crossings, fortifications, machinery and manpower. The regiment flew over 23,000 sorties and is said to have dropped 3,000 tons of bombs. The most highly decorated female unit in the Soviet Air Force, each pilot had flown over 1000 missions by the end of the war with twenty-three pilots awarded the Hero of the Soviet Union. Fighting with equal bravery and skill as their male counterparts earned them the name ‘Night Swallows’ by the Germans.

These women pilots had incredible courage to fly these antiquated bombers with open cockpits. Many people know of Amelia Earhart, but so few know about the Night Witches. Their story is truly Homeric. This biplane bomber, playing a role similar to the British Fairey Swordfish torpedo bomber (which crippled the Bismark) shows what antiquated technology can achieve when used with imagination and pluck. But the Russian plane was flown by women, which puts it in a class and legend of its own.

Yeah but the reason these were such "shitty" planes was because they could stall and go completely silent which made them invisible in the night. They served their specific purpose. It wasn't just about using every plane available or sticking the women with crap planes. They had their ups and downs. They also had some more technical advantage where they could dodge German planes in certain situations better but that was less relevant.

A superbly made for TV movie series. I take my hat off to all involved in the making of this TV series - a story that fully deserves to be told, of these brave, young female aviators, who laid down their lives in the fierce, blood-letting battles on the Russian fronts against the Nazis, in their fight for revenge and freedom - the freedoms we all enjoy today. May the stories and the lives, and loves of these heroic female aviators never be forgotten.

There are two documentary series called The Unknown War (kind of like a low rent The World at War) and Soviet Storm (like Battlefront) that are really awesome and give a very clear view from the Soviet prospective of WWII and just how horrific the eastern front was. I forgot where I heard it but one soldier said invading the USSR was like kicking over an anthill and pouring sugar on it.

They fought from before the meatgrinder of Stalingrad right up to the Battle for Berlin where Hitler, SS Nordland (mainly Norwegians) and other SS groups were cornered. The German troops were denied sleep night after night as the Night Witches flew close enough for the Germans to know they were coming and then cut their motors and gliding in silently (most bi-planes could glide well) would drop their bombs killing German troops and putting the fear of God into the rest so theyd stay nervously awake another night. There were female fighter pilots and a good story is about the "White Lily" from the flower painted on her Yak-3 fighter and who had shot down, I think, 10-11 planes of the Luftwaffe, an ace is 5 kills.

I saw all 8 episodes of this series. The intensity and suspense do build up throughout. This effort is a worthy homage to the heroic ladies of the 46th Taman Guard Regiment (ex-588th Night Bombing Regiment). The relentlessness of the Russian people and ability to resist under inhuman conditions is well illustrated. The issue of "Communist aparachik bigotry" is also brought up. The Great Patriotic War provides modern day Russia an extremely rich background for TV series and fascinating stories.Like all series, this one does have a few inaccuracies. The frontline commander of the regiment was not male but female. Her name was Yevdokya Bershanskaya (RIP). No one (to my knowledge) had come up with night vision goggles or other similar devices. Furthermore, I doubt anyone could have recognized his or her dead mother from the plane in the middle of a night flight (even if, indeed, the Po-2's were flying at tree top levels). Otherwise, great series which does a great job at awakening our curiosity about the Night Witches &/or Swallows.

That's really comparing apples to oranges. Different conditions and equipment. The rule was that if the US airman could survive 25 bomber missions then he would be 'retired' from service. The WWII daylight bombing raids (the British bombed at night, the American 8th Airforce during the day) were especially deadly for crews. To quote one source: "During World War II, one in three [USA] airmen survived the air battle over Europe. The losses were extraordinary. The casualties suffered by the Eighth Air Force were about half of the U.S. Army Air Force's casualties (47,483 out of 115,332), including more than 26,000 dead." Bombing missions to Germany necessitated flying first over the German coastal defenses, then over German defenses around French and Belgian cities and then finally over German defenses around German cities. And then back home again. That's a whole lot of anti-aircraft fire and fighter interceptors to brave. The Russian "Night Swallows" were fortunate in not having to fly through massive anti-aircraft barrages, or having the bulk of the Luftwaffe to deal with. But they were still very, very brave and committed.

We obviously share this addiction… Russian soft power at its best ! Btw, there is (at least) a good book about Soviet women pilots in WW2, by Liouba Vinogradova. Among other qualities, the author often contrasts the official Soviet accounts with the real history which she was able to discover after the fall of the communist regime. Among others, while she describes Raskova as a brilliant leader and a living model for "her girls", she also reveals that she was an NKVD officer who, during the "Great Terror" before the war, had likely denounced many airmen/women, with the consequences you may imagine… Nobody's perfect.

I love Russian movies, but I appreciate it lot more, when they have a German actors playing Germans. Because not only accents, pronunciation and hair styles are usually off key, but mannerism also. Interesting that Ukrainian movies (despite I have seen only few of them ) usually make both Soviet and German characters more authentic. For example this excellent short movie (that actually is supposed to be a trailer for some silly cell phone game) uses Ukrainian actors, but they are way more believable. kzread.info/dash/bejne/l6WZtamjc668Zps.html

When World War II broke out, there were numerous women who had training as pilots and many immediately volunteered. While there were no formal restrictions on women serving in combat roles, their applications tended to be blocked, run into red tape, etc. for as long as possible in order to discourage the applicants[citation needed. Raskova is credited with using her personal connections with Joseph Stalin to convince the military to form three combat regiments of women. Following a speech by Raskova on 8 September 1941 calling for women pilots to be allowed to fight, Stalin on 8 October 1941 ordered the formation of the all female 221st Aviation Corps. Not only would the women be pilots, but also support staff and engineers. After their training, the Group's three regiments received their formal designations as follows:

List for lovers of modern military Russian cinema with subs onKZread ( in some movies, sub must be enabled in the settings). "White Tiger", 28 Panfilov men, "Brest Fortress", ”Moment of Truth” (In august 44) - Even better if you read the book of the same name by Bogomolov. Amazing story, I've read it three times. “Tankers”; “Degraded”; “We are from the future 2” kzread.info/dash/bejne/iGqOuLqtlKTgZ5s.html guys get from the modern world into the past, into the war. "The Star"-sabotage reconnaissance group behind enemy lines; I also advise modern ones: Escape from Hell (Devyataev) a real story of escaping from a concentration camp on a German bomber, “Rzhev” about the bloodiest battle that claimed the lives of >1,200,000 soviet in three months, more than during the defense of Moscow in 7 months. "321 Siberian" . but these three films are not on KZread. Мade in USSR: Come and see; "Liberation" - 5 episodes, "Hot snow", “The Fate of a Man” is more of a human drama, USSR 1957. "They fought for their homeland" , Two Comrades Were Serving" - a film about the civil war, a fascinating story about a cameraman of an intelligent and commander from the people; "Admiral" 2008 civil war, real story. “The Ballad of a Soldier” is a military melodrama that was very popular in the USSR; “The Cranes Are Flying” is a tragic poignant story; If you love spy intellectual dialogue plot, then “Seventeen Moments of Spring” 12 episodes is for you. A Soviet agent in the highest echelon of the Third Reich in an attempt to interfere with the behind-the-scenes negotiations between the Germans and the Allies.

Excellent first episode, cant wait to watch the rest. My question is how the hell did they keep those engines from freezing solid. I lived in Anchorage Alaska and if you parked outside in winter you had to plug the engine in just to keep it warm overnight. They didn't have plugins or braziers or anything under the engine ?????

In one book once read how the Germans during the war "questioned" our prisoners as we cook and fly in The Russian winter. So here is the answer our of captured, plunged in shock pedantic until instructions and technically educated Germans. After turning off the engine, when the oil has already started to cool down, the oil tank was filled with gasoline and the engine then scrolled several times. The viscosity of the oil fell, and then the engine just started " on the cold." with increasing temperature gasoline evaporated. And aviation guns, which were cleaned from freezing grease in the cold, just lowered into the trough with almost boiling water to drive the lubricant, then wiped and flew "dry". But then there was a war, the life of combat units counted several departures... was justified.....(с)

Hello and many thanks for your answer. The gas in the oil makes sense. I remember my dad telling me that after the war had ended he was stationed during the winter in northern Germany and they used to keep small fires going under the Half Track engines to stop them freezing overnight. Thanks again, take care.

It’s scary enough to be in these planes and to turn off the engine and glide and hope that the engine turns on again after you bomb the target. They didn’t get to wear parachutes due to the weight of the parachutes so if the plane was going to go down they went with the plane. These planes also flew at less than 100mph and the German planes could fly over 400mph. That’s also very scary. These women flew a lot of missions in a single night and only 30 or so planes were lost. They flew way more missions than men usually did!

Pilots will suspect the flyers yelling to communicate in the air is a bit too creative. It's normally impossible to yell over the noise in an open plane. Even so this is good drama and I enjoyed all the parts. A bit of inaccuracy is excusable for a watchable story based on real heroic people and real events.
