"Night Shots" - Hammett's Noir Intricacy:
In Dashiell Hammett's story "Night Shots," the nameless detective of the Continental Detective Agency is thrust into a perplexing case that blends a domestic quagmire with an external mystery. The narrative unfolds as the Op receives an assignment to investigate an attempted murder on Talbert Exon, a cantankerous businessman recovering from pneumonia in his home in Knownburg, San Joaquin County.
Hammett, writing for "Black Mask," aptly describes the detective's entanglement in a "sweet little domestic mess," capturing the essence of the story's intrigue. As the detective delves into the investigation, he grapples with the complexities of the case, showcasing Hammett's knack for weaving intricate plots that extend beyond the mere discharge of firearms.
The tale not only exemplifies Hammett's signature hardboiled style but also illustrates his ability to inject excitement into the narrative, ensuring that suspense arises not solely from the business end of a gun but from the multifaceted layers of the mystery itself.

I love the "Nameless Detective of the Continental OP", the stories of Hammett have this sphere of reality you won't find in any other writer's work. Read all I could lay my hands on, here in Holland. So thanks for these stories.

Glad that you are getting this genre out. Pulp noir signals. Tip of the chapeau through dim cigarette haze.

Yay! It is a cold, rainy afternoon in Oregon USA. I have some respiratory congestion, so am resting. What better way to wile away the afternoon than visiting with an old friend; in this case, a Dashiell Hammett story. Thank you, Tony. Thank you, Jeff. Wonderful voice for Hammett; well narrated.

It's a gloomy cold iced-roads night in Chicago. My nephew lives in Beaverton,or., and has been telling me about your snow blasts, I have been telling him of our flooding, ice and busted pipes, we are commiserating with each other, now I am drinking cold brew coffee, he is drinking hot tea, and we are listening to dashel, and writing to you, just another cold, sweet frozen American, staying warm, lightly humored and connected, anonymously, by utube. Ain't it grand?? ☕. 🫖. 🕒. M. Elgin. Il

Thanks Tony. I enjoyed that one even more than the last. Perhaps because it gave me a clearer picture of where it was set; more contained, easier to visualise. I guess I've seen so many 1950s American movies that I could see the house and characters just so. I'm looking forward to a time when you incorporate your real life experiences into a gritty psycho-drama ghost story. Otay fascinating stuff; scary! Have a good night . 🌌🌃

What a good Hammett story! Haven't read this one before. Your police story reminded me of the time I was driving in the inside lane of a freeway in L.A. There was a police car that came up behind me and seemed to be following me. Suddenly, his red and blue flashing lights flipped on, and my adrenalin shot through through the roof. I thought for sure I was being pulled over. I hadn't done anything wrong that I was aware of, but that didn't matter. I turned my blinker on and moved over to the lane on my right, prepared to move all the way over to the right shoulder, heart hammering. Instead of following me, his car shot forward, his hand waving a thank you for getting out of his way. Weak with relief, I waved back. I still think of him with gratitude.

Love this very American voice. Midwesterner. Rolling like the prairie! Sharp pugnacious consonants for stops - lovely resonance with the R and no sibilant S.
