I had been working on this video for weeks before Romero’s passing. It sucks when your work suddenly becomes morbidly relevant and it sucks even worse losing a personal hero. I shot my first short film freshman year in high school on a sony sr10 handicam. Zombies in the woods. Every film kid starts with zombies. Took some time off to put a bit of distance between him and the video instead of scrapping it all together. Just didn’t want it to come off as opportunistic. Anyway, I’ll be back with a new video in a couple days. In the meantime, do me a favor and watch NotLD if you haven’t already. And if you have, then watch it again. Much love -kk R.I.P GR

Good call, and fantastic job with this video. Using the idea of the zombie as the general motif is a great way to discuss creativity born out of the lack of copyrights.

Copyright law, as it's applied today, stifles creativity. Its implications are among the gravest and most far reaching of our time, and it must be drastically reformed as soon as possible.

Yes, Tomcii, that's fair, but entire generations have lived and died with hardly anything entering the public domain since the 20's. At the very least, it should be lowered from 70 years after the person's death. It makes no sense whatsoever for an entire human lifespan to pass before the people who experienced a thing can alter it. Let's say that a creative work is truly influential on a person by around 10, right? That's a pretty good average number for when that big thing truly touches your soul, and then the author dies immediately after you experience that. Then, when you're 80, you finally get that chance to see what you loved be used, but all the young people never even saw it or touched it! And you, on average, have about a year left in your life before you die, and your love of that work dies with you. Then that work will wither and die without anyone seeing it, a raisin in the sun by brute force of copyright laws that have strangled creative freedoms for far too long for people who covet works with little to no regard for the abilities of others to artistically enhance their works.

Why thank him? It was a mistake. If he had it his way, you would not even see modern zombies.
A perfect example of why our copyright laws need to be reworked so that stuff goes into the public domain sooner and for fair use to be expanded: Imagine all of the other creative booms we are missing out on due to how long and how strict copyright terms are.

Absolutely, but "entire life of the author plus 70 years" is nowhere near that balance. Have it be 30 years.

Copyright is violence against peaceful people. Nobody should fear violence for the inherently nonviolent act of copying, even if it interferes with a business model. The premise that nobody would create anything if not for copyright is absurd, and this video is a great case study on both how that is true, as well as the public benefit from not enforcing copyright. Please reconsider your stance on copyright. There is no "balance," there is only violence against peaceful people.

That mistake is what makes George Romero even more of a giant of art. He stayed till the end relevant as an artist he didn't lived his life siting on top of just one piece of work. Love you George great great vid dude!
Yes new kaptainkristian!! Romero is the Godfather of Zombie flicks. His passing was awful. I was considering doing a video essay on him and the way he pretty much created the Zombie Genre but this will do, the copyright story is really interesting. Thanks kaptainkristian. Great episode.

AirbusPvP Right there with you. It blows my mind to think that some of my favorite movies and TV shows would not have been made, if not for a small omission on the movie title shot of a movie released almost 50 years ago. Especially when you consider that something like Game of Thrones, and to an even greater extent Thriller, became such massive cultural landmarks.
I've waited so long too hear that silky smooth voice again. But in all seriousness, great content as always.

malcolm moody there's obviously a balance that needs to be achieved. For one, copyright laws exist primarily to protect the creator, or they should, at least. If you get rid of copyright laws altogether, creativity is again stifled, but instead by the inability to control their IP.
I've been needing my kaptainkristian fix for weeks! Thank God! Great video. I saw your it and was immediately taken back to the first time I watched Night of the Living Dead. It's funny how a movie so old can still put a chill down hour spine sometimes. Keep up the great work!
Really missed your videos, but take as much time as you need I'll always come back to enjoy your awesome content.
nice video dude - didn't know this before!
I always end up sitting through the entirety of your adverts because the end beat is SOOOO good.
Fantastic video. I always look forward to your videos! Keep up the great work!!!
I never watched Night of the Living Dead. Haven't watched any ofthe spin-offs/remakes either. I don't even have much interest in zombies as a cinematographic subject. But somehow, you still make a video that holds my interest, regardless of the subject and my attachment to it. My favorite videos from you are the ones about subjects that were present during my childhood, such as [adult swim] and Bugs Bunny; but somehow, when I watch your videos on subjects that I barely know anything about, I get as involved as the previously mentioned. The way you show the story behind it and the story after it puts the whole movie in such a higher baseline, and I love it! Gives me interest in something that I had previously no desire to learn about, now that I know the cultural impact of it. Whithout even going into your amazing editing, I just want you to know that the content in your work is splendid. You give something that no other video essayist gives. Thank you
Thanks for coming back, love your work
Thank you!!! I missed your video. Can't wait for the next one.
Thank you for always finding the right words to fully explain the passion and love for certain things that I have never been able to voice with as much passion as the feelings I hold. I hope you never give up doing these videos, each one makes you reflect on it and grow and want to learn more.
i love the quality, thanks for making my day. hope to see the next one. soon.
Wow!.... love your topics! Love yo watch your videos and learn something new, I watch with full attention! Your editing style is perfect and the way you break it all down is very inspiring in a way, I've always wanted to edit like you and to make videos this great!
Your videos are amazing! I just discovered your channel today and I've binged almost all of your videos. Keep up the quality work, the content and production of your videos are top tier sir.
Love your videos. Glad to see a new one. Keep it up!
I love seeing someone who puts so much passion and effort into their work. Every one of your videos make me feel a type of way, I can feel the love, the work, and the effort put into your work. I don't even care that your videos are so far spaced apart I just want you to keep doing what you do best and that's making intelligent, passion filled, quality videos. The background music, the editing, the dialogue, everything about your videos are so perfectly executed. I could sit here and binge watch your videos for hours, I've at least put 20 views on each of them. Much love to you Kaptain, Much love and much respect.
Informative and entertaining as always! Thank you.
I'm glad you are back with a new video! I hope you manage to get your video of Calvin & Hobbes back.
Loved the video. While I'm a huge horror movie junkie, and of course a George A. Romero fan I had never know any of this. Very insightful my man. But I will say you can't have a best zombie movie list and leave our Return of the Living Dead (1985). Great work!
Happy to see you back! Great work

The only channel on youtube that gets me to stop watching something else midway through in order to watch this just a few moments sooner. Thankyou. Your work is outstanding as always.
Wow. I finally got around to seeing the whole film, and I'm floored by how good it was. I've loved this video for years because of the way it handles public domain ideas, but I clearly should've paid more attention to your reccomendation.
I love this video. I love this channel. I'm currently starstruck with the rising genre of video documentaries where it feels like a look into the mind of a creator and his interests, as well as the brilliant conduit into learning and education. I just wanted to say that straight from the _brilliant_ intro on all your videos, I fell in love with them. The tone, music, style, and everything else is so amazing. Really from the bottom of my heart as an artist and lover of films and film theory, I really appreciate the work you put into these videos. Even when you make video on a topic I'd never expect myself caring about, I find myself invested and learning. Bravo, kaptainkristian.
INSTANTLY CLICKED been waiting for so long but it's worth the wait. I'll watch the entire video now
Was waiting for this for a while
The other day I saw Night of the Living Dead playing on TV. I had never seen it. Saw it a bit and then thought to myself I had time to watch it any other day and went on to do something else. Then I learned of Romero's passing and now with your video, I'm not gonna leave my home until I watch all his movies. Because I really like zombies and I owe it to the creator to see his original work. Thanks Kristian!
AMAZING as always kapt! incredible editing, great script and as always gotta groove with that outro! B)
