Night of the Iguana -final poem Nonno’s poem

Ойын-сауық

The final poem scene from The Night of the Iguana.
Nonno's Poem
How calmly does the olive branch
Observe the sky begin to blanch
Without a cry, without a prayer
With no betrayal of despair
Some time while light obscures the tree
The zenith of its life will be
Gone past forever
And from thence
A second history will commence
A chronicle no longer gold
A bargaining with mist and mold
And finally the broken stem
The plummeting to earth, and then
An intercourse not well designed
For beings of a golden kind
Whose native green must arch above
The earth's obscene corrupting love
And still the ripe fruit and the branch
Observe the sky begin to blanch
Without a cry, without a prayer
With no betrayal of despair
Oh courage! Could you not as well
Select a second place to dwell
Not only in that golden tree
But in the frightened heart of me

I was 15 in 1988 and rented this from the library. Back then you couldnt' simply look up movie lines. So I sat there and would play a segment, write it down, push play, write another segment, and on and on. And I would read that poem every day for the next 20 years. I can speak it by heart, of course, by now. But I still like to come back here and listen just one more time, I always say. Just one more time. Oh God, please can't we stop now? Fantastic movie. Richard Burton "spawning" with the girl who played Lolita.

Thank you for posting this, I have always loved this poem. It's about a tree that is dying, reached it's zenith but doesn't despair because it left generations of itself to go on. The poet merely asks of God of why he chose to give more courage to a tree that's dying than his mortal being. Valid question. One of the most beautiful poems I ever heard.

Tennessee Williams had a great uncle who was a famous Pulitzer Prize winning poet, Robert P. Tristram Coffin. He borrowed the name for Nonno and most amazingly & beautifully copied Coffin's favorite A/A/B/B/ rhyme scheme with its beautiful lilting sound. An amazing job of poetic mimicry. By the way the original Coffin was from Maine not Nantucket and his book of poems 'Strange Holiness' is superb and lovely and grossly neglected.

I played Shannon in the opening season of the Annapolis Md outdoor summer theatre. The film never caught the humor of the text, nor the irony of the behavior. When the reviewer attended, the heavens opened with "thunder, lightning and some rain during the scene where I called for it on my knees. No one left. The poem is so wonderful. The play is not done often enough and is timeless. Ed Lillard Raleigh NC. 6/20/16

@@MWorsa In the movie, the actor does indeed say the word "olive" instead of "orange." But that was a mistake, an accident - there's a story about it somewhere on the web - and the poem itself references an "orange" branch.

At daybreak, when the falcon claps his wings, No whit for grief, but noble heart and high, With loud glad noise he stirs himself and springs, And takes his meat and toward his lure draws nigh; Such good I wish you! Yea, and heartily I am fired with hope of true love's meed to get; Know that Love writes it in his book; for why, This is the end for which we twain are met. Mine own heart's lady with no gainsayings You shall be always wholly till I die; And in my fight against all bitter things Sweet laurel with fresh rose its force shall try; Seeing reason wills not that I cast love by (Nor here with reason shall I chide or fret) Nor cease to serve, but serve more constantly; This is the end for which we twain are met. And, which is more, when grief about me clings Through Fortune's fit or fume of jealousy, Your sweet kind eye beats down her threatenings As wind doth smoke; such power sits in your eye. Thus in your field my seed of harvestry Thrives, for the fruit is like me that I set; God bids me tend it with good husbandry; This is the end for which we twain are met. Princess, give ear to this my summary; That heart of mine your heart's love should forget Shall never be: like trust in you put I: This is the end for which we twain are met.

This is a poem that equates with the sermon on the mount where Jesus talks about flowers and how they, in their natural state, are as beautiful as any man made garment. And why do we have to impose rules as to love..and who should love who. And why can't there be a place that accepts all.

Fără trădarea disperării De multa vreme luminând, Se stinge-ncet in vârsta serii Îngenunchiat spre lutul surd. "Some time while night obscures the tree" instead of "... while light obscures..." Also, Williams' poem starts "How calmly does the orange branch" The actor says "olive" instead of "orange," as you have it. Even though the scene intercuts with Burton & Gardner, it seems to have been shot in one long take. The performances of Cyril Delevanti (Nonno) & Deborah Kerr are so exquisite, I'm guessing director Huston thought he'd never get it better, even with a flub in the poem's first line!

@@olddog610 It's "night," not "light. You can view the poem in the play "Night of the Iguana." Moreover, it makes little sense that the word is "light." As for its appearance in your link - and other places on the web - I can only remind you that there's a ton of bad information on the web.
