My ex MIL is Sri-Lankan and she explained eating with her hands to me as the ultimate bite, every bite. When I first met her, She was going to not use her hands while eating because she didn't want to scare away the white girl. But I asked her to just please not worry about that stuff - and occasionally would end up eating things like hot ass curry sometimes with my hands too. In my experience - I've only ever seen her use one hand, and even then, mostly her thumb and two to three fingers. She explained it as eating a lot more selectively - a pinch of this, a poke of that - and mindfully! Give it a try Matt. It's not as much of a culture shock as it seems like it would be! More so I just thought "this only seems odd to me because growing up my experience was scolding if I didn't use utensils"

Hey Nigel & Matt, Hello from India. There's a scam going on India in which scammers sends you QR code to scan and the amount will be transferred to your account. But there's a catch, they do for couple hundred bucks in which money is credited to your account but then large amount gets debited from account instead of being credited. Spread the word !

We encountered a similar cheque scammer years ago. We were trying to sell two air conditioners online, and the guy said he wanted to buy BOTH for his daughter in university, which was already weird -- why would she need TWO air conditioners? He gave us the line about sending us a cheque for more than we wanted, and we would transfer the difference back to him. So we went along with it to just see what would happen, and when the cheque arrived in the mail it looked obviously fake. But we took it to CIBC anyway (since it was supposed to be a cheque from that bank), and one of the tellers confirmed it was phony. After that, we just ignored his messages.

You use only your right hand to eat (well, sometimes I need two because I hold kerupuk with my left hand) And don't worry, we also have tissue, just in case you need to use your phone mid way. It's might be strange to use hands to eat but you will get used to it 😁

He then proceeds to send me numerous messages going down in price every time and I was busy and didn't see them. I get out of work and my phone is blown up with messages from this guy telling me I was an asshole and wasted his time and how dare I waste his time like that. I laughed and told him jokes on you cause you don't try to sell something to someone unsolicited and then get mad when they don't buy it.

Hey Nigel, young viewer from Hong Kong here. I really enjoy your podcasts and videos, and please keep going. That said, as a native Cantonese speaker, I want to ask you about the etymology of Uncle Roger’s Haiyaa and Fuiyoh. They sound sort of Cantonese based, but I’m not quite sure whether I’ve heard them before. Are these specific to Malaysian Cantonese? Because if not I don’t really know about fuiyoh, but I have an idea about Haiyaa. In HK Cantonese, we sometimes say Weiyaa when we’re annoyed or frustrated, basically in the same way you say Haiyaa as Uncle Roger. I’m guessing Haiyaa is a combination between Weiyaa and another one of the Cantonese exclamations, which is sort of that really frustrated sighing sound we make that sounds like “hey” or “huy”. Please let me know how exactly you made these Cantonese exclamation sounds. Though I think you could use a bit more intonation to make them more realistic, because you always just use a flat tone to maintain the Cantonese accent. Regardless, thanks for your comedic representation of Asian culture, and please continue.

Hi. Malaysian Chinese here. If I'm not mistaken, Nigel is not Cantonese. So he doesn't really speak Cantonese. The Haiyaa I think is actually our usual Aiya. The H and flat tone is for westerners to learn the word easier i suppose. dont think it is the same meaning with Weiyaa. Weiyaa is more to the meaning of Hey. Right?

Picking up the (bowl) and/or scooping (rice) into our mouth is not always considered good manners in parts of Asia, such as Korea or Japan. In Japan, most plain rice is eaten with chopsticks (unless it's sushi, at times, or onigiri), but fried rice or Japanese curry with rice is usually eaten with spoons (even if the fried rice is served in a bowl).

Interesting. I have a story that is a mix between the 2 Scam Stories here. I was selling my old computer, and a guy says that he would need a courier to pick it up. And he sent me a cheque. But the amount was greater than the one we agreed on. Meanwhile, this cheque came from a bank I have never heard of, and it exist on a street that does not exist. So, I pretended that I have not received the cheque. The guy sent me another one, still similar issues, but this time, from another nonexistent bank. In the end, I didn't even try to deposit the cheques. Forgot how the conversation concluded. It is rare, but interesting to see. This was in the 2015s too, maybe they are trying to monetize on people's forgotten knowledge about cheque and cheque bouncing?

If she didn't straight up said it, she wouldn't know if you're up for it or if she's leading you on. If you never agreed to it, you could accuse her of leading you on either way. That would be a messy situation. Also if you're not ok with hearing it called by it's name even once in a while, how are you ok with doing it. Seems like internal conflict, that would make you negative towards youself and your partner, if you didn't make up your mind first

Quick thing about how indians eat. We don't actually use both hands! In our family we eat rice with just one. If we eat naan, we tear it with one hand too. The other unused hand is for picking up water/the drink. It'll be really hard to clean your hands if both are dirty, but with just one used hand, we can do stuff like open the door to the washroom or open the tap 😆

Matt, eating with hands in India is no different to eating a burger or toast. Do you eat your toast, and burgers, fries, etc, with a knife and fork? Indians eat dahl and anything soupy with either a spoon or a specific bread, like purees/puri. And the curries are eaten by ripping bits of chapatti and using that to pick and scoop up the food, your hands don't get dirty. You might be mistaking India with Morocco and the Philippines. The latter scoop up rice with their hands i think. And in Morocco wet food is eaten with bare hands, i grew up eating Indian food with my hands/a piece of chapatti or something... and rarely did my hands get dirty. Indians don't scoop-up wet food with bare hands, and the amount of Indian restaurants in England you should know that... Do you go to Indian restaurants and just shove your bare hands in a pot of curry?

Regarding the discussion around minute 6: Many species, including humans, have evolved a trait called female choice. For females it’s far more resource intensive to have offspring than for males. And ultimately, it’s the goal of every individual to „spread their genes“ as much as possible. That‘s why the strategies for females in many/most species is to look for the best quality mate, to ensure the best chances of their offspring thriving, whereas for males it‘s more effective to have as many mates as possible. In humans that manifests in females generally being pickier than males when it comes to selecting a partner.

a small thing matt should know. im from nepal so its mostly same as india, we eat with only one hand. we don't use toilet paper, we wipe our ass with hand and water (left hand) and we eat with right hand. and while eating we only use our fingers, most of the time food doesn't touch our palm. but i can see the confusion

I can use chopsticks, forks, spoons and knives. Filipinos have been using there hand for rice for generations. So Uncle Koa if you are so angry use your hands.

Actually Matt, you eat with your right hand that’s it. With the left hand you wash your booty that’s the Asian way. We don’t walk around with poop residue 🤓

No offense to Matt, but Nigel needs someone else to do the podcast with him. Matt is too Nice, Nigel needs more push back. This is just Nigel talking shit and Matt being shy and uncomfortable in the corner.

My answer to Kokoa... It seems that your gripe is Asians lord chopsticks over spoons... As far as I know... No Asians don't, fairly sure chopsticks are primarily used in conjunction with spoons. It's FORKS that Asians have distain for. Forks almost entirely pointless when chopsticks fulfill most of its uses. Spoons fulfill pretty much everything else chopsticks can't and then you have the knife for cutting, that's it. If you are complaining that you can't cut steaks with chopsticks... Huh, I haven't had that problem

Well, customarily in India we eat with one hand, so the “both hands are dirty” excuse doesn’t work. Just a small fact check

20:50 or just in MSG package tho if he doesn't left anything to his kids I worry they could just put his ashes in Jamie Oliver's chilli jam jar.
