Nietzsche's Warning to The Future | God is Dead

Perhaps Nietzsche's most famous phrase is "God is dead and we have killed him". But we rarely stop to think about what Nietzsche actually meant by this. And it is a worthy task, because this simple statement has been misinterpreted over and over again in a myriad of different ways, and we could do with separating the wheat from the chaff.

You know, AI research has revealed that humans apply meaning to everything before 'percieving' it objectively. E.G. if you look at a book, your brain processes it as an object for reading, before your eyes see it as a bundle of papers with words on them. So, quite literally, look into a mirror, and your brain will tell you what you mean to yourself. Make of that what you will. Just don't look too deeply, most do not like what they find.

To be fair I am not actually convinced he precludes exerting your will over others. Otherwise the idea of Napoleon being an approximate exemplar (specifically because he was a conqueror) would not make much sense. Again there is certainly textual evidence either way (as a counterpoint to the Napoleon example, you could point to passages in Beyond Good and Evil where he talks about the spontaneous benevolence that arises from power). I tend to be sceptical of a view of Nietzsche that is pro-tyranny but I also don't want to brush aside the aspects of his philosophy that do involve the exertion of will on other people. He may mean "setting values for only yourself" but he doesn't seem to imply that those values necessarily won't involve interfering with other people. BTW nice profile pic - I would love to do a video on the philosophy of Skyrim at some point, although it would be pretty rogue.

I just dont understand how some people require a religion to be a decent person. Its sad. When I die, I'll be gone, never to see a loved one again. I'll fade into nothingness as the memory of me fades with the ones that die after me. Thats fine. We should be kind and take care of one another not because there is no god and life is fleeting, but because of the fact that life is fleeting, we should make the life we live better for ourselves and others. Religion always boils down to "im right and you're wrong" when realistically we're all wrong and have no idea whats going on or why we're here. How maybe but now why, because there is no why, we just are by luck and chance. That means more to me then giving myself a false belief because I can't cope with the true unforgiving nature of reality. It honestly makes life more beautiful because of the fact that we probably shouldnt exist at all and it didnt take a guiding hand or all powerful god to make it happen. Makes the fact we even exist at all more amazing.

It is not that you need religious to be a moral person (to have a conscience); it is that without religion there is nothing to prove that your conscience is (objectively) moral. The moral standards (the conscience) of someone living in our current Weston society will be very differently to that of a person living in ancient India, and very different to that of a person in future. How can you be sure?

@eyoung4882 Well, I guess that's where I feel we use easy problem solving skills and take the things that cause general harm to society as a collective and try our best to do away with it. Do you want stabbed? No well don't stab..... that is pretty base line. And the people who would definitely be at the minority can be... helped? In anyway we can to fix those issues. Like we already do because those people would be mental. We can accept others for cultural differences better because they're cultural and not a sin because my religion dictates it to be.... we can as a collective majority think for ourselves and society and how to better it as a whole without a divide. What really causes the most divide outside of religions...... I can't think of much, outside of race, which has already been stigmatized because we know it's objectively wrong...... I hope this veiw helps lol. I'm not scornful as much as I am sad to see how much more harm, imo, has come than good from religions.......

Great video and a very deep analisys of his often simplified and misinterpreted idea. I'm glad you pointed out that the first principle of a value system must be that life is worth living despite the lack of evidence or reason. There is a fundamental difference between what is rational and what is healthy, and to live happily you have to be irrational to some extent. Some people argue that creating new values is, from a psychological point of view, the weakest Nietzsche's idea, since you can't force yourself to have certain beliefs, but I like to think about this idea as creating authentic values (and not just rationally justified ones, like Raskolnikov's) even if they are against customs.

This is the simplest solution to the hard problem of consciousness once we accept reincarnation, and there is some information suggesting us to accept it too. 5:05 - at least from Beyond G+E, I think this is a mischaracterization of Nietzsche's impression of science. Sure, some scientists / philosophers may genuinely be pursuing truth, but he argues that the majority are actually pursuing wealth, fame, power, etc., meaning that the death of God was ultimately a consequence of humans turning away from pursuing truth. Meaning, what has taken God's place in our value system are material, limited constructions, not a transcendent ideal giving life meaning. That's why God's death leads to nihilism and destruction, because ultimate "truth" is replaced by worldly, finite things. Great video overall - love the channel. Would love to hear your thoughts!

@@SMT-ks8yp We understand ourselves as human, and with it all our flaws and strengths. "To be gods" is to be something else entirely. Yet the human experience is so perfectly imperfect that it is naïve to just think that to go beyond it is a good thing, without considering what we have to lose in the process. Many have sold their humanity for the devil's bargain, and they have been very rich. And the fact that we are by conception imperfect means that our conceptions of "gods" (ideals) would definitionally be imperfect (because our conceptions of the world---including us---cannot imagine all the possible simple principles (physical or otherwise) that make up the human experience, inasmuch that a nested simulation tend to have a lower resolution and uses more resource than if it wasn't nested at all). To aspire to be gods is to reject humanity. To aspire humanity is to move closer to God.

I think data from large studies have proven to be valuable for these questions. We know hedonistic pleasure will lead you to ruin just by looking at the rock stars of the 80s, and witnessing what decades of drug use and partying can do to a human being. From there my logic tells me that seeking suffering is better than seeking pleasure. When you consider the teachings of Buddha, Jesus, Marcus Aurelius, and pretty much any wise figure in history, they will all tell you about the value of suffering. By just using our own history as data, science has given us the tools to find our own answers. It is a real shame that the masses don't really seem to value logic anymore.

In regards to atheism taken seriously, the rebuttal I would give is that arguably theists haven't given secularism a fair chance yet. In were going off the slightly over-generalized (but accurate imo) notion that almost all theists are indoctrinated with their particular belief in god hereditically, then how can we ever truly know if there was a need for god in the first place. I think it is entirely unsurprising that those who are predisposed to an anthropocentric worldview are the ones grieving at the prospect of god's absence. How can we really test secularism if we continually tell younger generations that they need a god to have purpose, morality, sense of free will, etc.?

I don't know exactly, but I predict we will be forced into secularization as technology advances and the cultural zeitgeist shifts. One of the problems I have is that the absolutist approach instantiated by various religions is no way to attempt to cope with this change. While there are some self-proclaimed religious folk who only interpret their scripture metaphorically, the actual devout believers take those doctrines literally, which I believe to be ultimately incompatible with most forms of societal progression. I guess one proposal (pertaining to morality) would be to adopt a system more like Santa Claus naughty and nice list, instead of objectively grounded, written rules. This way, people could believe in god without the conceited absolutist preconceptions. They would be acting in accordance with whatever they thought would land them on god's naughty or nice list. Maybe there could even be such a thing as objective morality, but it's probably best if the commandments were hidden away so that the people were forced to speculate about the hidden truth and debate what they theorize would put them on god's nice list.

if he wanted us to be rebels against the system,we cant because we have employers and laws to submit to,and we cant be our own rebels all the time. Also, the human need for God is not artificial. Its a true instinct that cannot be overcome by all,and its unnatural to rebel against that because life would have no meaning for many ,no matter how hard some people would try to replace it with something or someone else.Maybe not all of us,but a lot of people still find satisfaction in God who will give them certain gifts that no one else can within this life and mainly in a great after life to solve the problems of death, and since no one else can do this. Also, we could only be our own gods by nietzche's value system through devolving to self pleasure too often, or make other people gods once again and only worship them thereby the Fascist state sees this as an opportunity to make their leaders the supermen and replace God with themselves and direct their own brave new world of values and pleasures.

I've also seen the "God is dead" interpreted as a logical argument against the existence of god: What does the word "dead" mean? Its not its own property. A person doesn't come over with a deadness. A doctor wouldn't assess a dead person for signs of being dead. They wouldn't be like "see that, only dead people do that. Therefore this person is dead." Instead, they check them for visible signs of life and, upon finding no visible signs of life, conclude that they're dead. Now, I can't show you that God is dead in the same way I can't show you Henry VIII is dead. However, we have evidence that Henry VIII was alive but can no longer show any signs of his aliveness. Therefore, we cN conclude that they're dead. In fact, the only people who can't don't show any visible sings of life are dead people. With that in mind, what are gods visible signs of life? Whats the point of a God that you can't even show isn't dead? There's no point in a God that you can't even show isn't dead and God can't be both God and pointless.
