I think people misunderstand Refn sometimes. He is not a snob or pretentious. He is just an odd guy, who is out of place wherever he goes ;)
what i like the most is his honesty... He didn't pretend like he knew everything. He basically just said he didn't know shit about ska and bought records based on their covers! props to Nic!
Just watched TOTDY. Funny seeing him pull out the ska as the first thing - the scene of Damian jamming out has to be one of my favorite scenes of all time
For all the people who think he's pretentious or whatever, at least appreciate that in today's Hollywood mono-culture he's choosing to make movies that are different and he doesn't want to be like the factory-line directors, most of whom have no discernible personality.

yeah I think he does come across as kinda "pretentious" (sometimes.. not here at all though) but a lot of artist type people are like that.. and I totally agree with what you are saying Refn basicaly does whatever the hell he wants to do with his movies which is fucking awesome.

That he has the rights to probably Vincent Price's best film, "Witchfinder general" if he remakes it, I'll be numb with joy!

He has a kind of pretentiousness that’s enjoyable, like a friendly version

His picks pretty much sum up his filmmaking, "I thought this looked cool so I went with it"

Great taste in music and great director!!
I love that the Ska became Damian’s music in Too Old To Die Young!
i was expecting just a ton of red LED strip lights
I'd like to imagine what American Psycho would have looked like under Nick's direction GOD DAMN IT

great thank you for invite movie directors.
I too am a fan of DIANE Warwick and SKAR music.
I was watching old episodes of What's In My Bag and didn't think it could get better until I saw this new episode with NWR.
I love watching these things, mostly because, I'm reminded how much I miss old school record stores, and vinyl.
I would like to see an episode with Mads Mikkelsen, one of Refn favorite actor..
My absolute favourite director
0:46 this features heavily in Too Old to Die Young.

I get the impression Refn just loves taking the piss.
Great films Weird Guy
Two Johnny Thunders and The Heartbreakers picks, very rad. Had no idea what to expect his tastes to be, but he's worthy based solely on those two. Good stuff.
I really like Refn's movies. He is in search of an experience of something different, he creates something aesthetically and psychologically provoking, unlike the big majority of directors who make the same movies over and over with the mandatory politically correct layer on top
thanks for having nicolas on. never knew he was so funny
love his #movies
That Dionne Warwick record is excellent. Some super cool Beatles covers on it! Coltrane in Mono... Jimmy Smith... Peggy Lee... Good Stuff!!!
Heartman adding to his collection.
He listens to a lot of Gold Ska; I listen to a lot of Gold Ska now because of Too Old To Die Young. It’s come full circle.
Good choices - especially Emika.
some cool stuff i'll be looking for, pretty good episode the dude seems nice
That box set compilation at about 3:20, right after Dionne Warwick, is Purple Snow: Forecasting The Minneapolis Sound, released by Numero Group. Good for him!
Great one.
I love, the Pusher trilogy, Valhalla rising, Bronson and Drive

Not a fan of 'Only God Forgives'? I love it. That being said, I've watched 'The Neon Demon' three times and it still doesn't click with me.
i wish nicolas widing refn would buy me a record...
Refn was already in my good books but after praising Dione Warrick he just went to galactic level with me!!!
Has he done an actual sci fi movie yet? Or maybe that spy movie he mentioned takes place in space or something. Really enjoyed this episode. More directors please!

He cites Valhalla Rising as his sci-fi film in terms of subtext, even though, yes, on the face of it, is a viking actioner.
great picks

nice choices
The Julie London record is brilliant and you can find a copy for $10 at most record stores
Heartman!
I like sounds of spaceships.
Reminds me of an old friend from art school. Heck, everyone in art school was like this. Not pretentious, just direct, just himself.
what a guy. fuck the haters on here. Refn is a hero.
Groovy.
Big bloody bag you have there Refn to fit all your stuff in.
My first jazz record was The Cat too!!!
Is John Zorn on your list too? Please contact him to do one of these episodes. Would be awesome!
Thank you, Amoeba
Fine taste
He bought the rights to the Witchfinder General! That's a remake I'd watch..
The Temptations. . . . 👏🏾 your mother raised you well.
The Temptations! Just when I thought NWR couldn't get any cooler!
Check "Bleeder" out from Nicolas.. And "Pusher" ofcourse..
i wish i was this kind of person, the one that just grabs anything that catches their eye. I need to know what im buying
A version of Witchfinder General by Nicolas Winding Refn? Count me in!
professor giving classes again
He bought rights to remake Witchfinder General, plus he's working on a spy film? Yes, yes. Bring them on, Nicky.
Love scar music.
Great selection Having an accent , style and an open mind is not " pretentious".
Nicolas please direct an episode of The Get Down
Wide range of musical tastes: skar, jarzz, purnk, Mortown, Perggy Lee. Wish I could go to Amoebra.
great #filmmaker
Cliff came up!
His turtle face is hilarious.
i love skar
Since he claimed to have bought the rights to remake "The Witchfinder General" I wish he'd hurry up and remake the movie, and if you ever get a chance to see the original with Vincent Price, I highly reccomend you watch it! Great Film.
pure K I N O
his movie Valhalla Rising is the only germanic/norse movie worth a damn. amazing film
EL DIOS AL QUE REZO CADA NOCHE.
What song is playing after the introduction but before he gets to his picks?
G R O O V Y
People say Drive is his best, nope the Pusher trilogy is his best work.
Loovely
he always comes off as a prick, but goddamm it he’s talented, he is truly one of the best directors of this era
+20 likes from Heartman.
Where the movies at Nic!?
Any chance you could track down Matt Skiba, I'd be really interested to see his selections...? Or any of the Alkaline Trio guys for that matter, just Matt's probably going to be around with Blink.
Ska makes sense now why he was curious about it cause he used a couple ska songs for too old to die young
It's cute that he calls ska music "scar"
Wonder when that spy movie is being made?
Do one of this videos with Damien Chazelle, please!!! :3
He likes the word "groovy"....

I understand those who doesn’t like that movie or another movies from except Drive and one of the Pusher movies.. but personally I really like his stuff used to say he makes be proud of being danish “ yeah I know it’s stupid but it’s shouldn’t taking that seriously “ but he is great indeed in my book 😎👌
Don't open 'til Cannes, its the FARTDORA BOX!
He picked a ton of records, some weird ones too.
"Du' så glad" - Tonni
Is the Cliff he's talking to behind the camera Cliff Martinez?
To be a great artist you have to expand your taste
Dude just dropped like $600!
Which emika song is played here?
if you haven't seen William Freidkin interview him, it's fucking hilarious
Yup first
