The best Toreador rendition I have ever heard. Powerful and big, rich, vibrant, masculine and suave, with bel canto and legato all in one. His voice is well suited to sing this song, which most baritone have done well but not with such power. I first heard this in 1967 and has been my favourite ever since.

This is magnificent, no doubt. He is singing at the top of register and the whole aria fits the picture of a proud, very virile toreador very well. Bizet had a basso in mind but the tessitura was a little to high, consequently bass-baritones or dark baritones do it very often. Ghiaurov was a typical slavic high bass, also magnificent in Boris and Verdi. I wonder if he ever sang the profundo part Sarastro, which I don´t think he ever did. Bravissimo Toreador, with a muleta and an espada.

Yitzhahazak Ghiaurov never sung Sarastro nor Wagner. I had a talk with him about singing Wager, starting with King Marke and Hunding. Me meaned perhaps........ Be he did not. He never sung German.

Non avendo potuto ascoltare illustri bassi dei primi decenni del Novecento, soprattutto Pasero e Siepi, forse non ho una visione d'insieme nitida.Splendide voci per le poche registrazioni sentite quelle dei nostri bassi citati..e ottimi artisti altri,Pinza per esempio,Raimondi o Christoff ma quando hai la fortuna di imbatterti nella voce di Ghiaurov tutto sparisce,timbro immenso, multicolore,scintillante, con una risonanza magnetica. Neanche il seppur grande Ramey lo raggiunge,nessuno gli è pari.

This is real power and beauty all rolled up into a GREAT BASSO named Nicolai. I love his voice way down there! I also think he is a real gentleman...watch him as he sings the TRIO (Faust)....The entire trio is wondrous, but Nicolai kept his eyes on Katia and gave her hand a very polite and sweet kiss. I loved it! Have no idea of his age now.....but BRAVOOOOO!

Dear nikolatirol,It is rather presumptuous of you to tell Miss Mirkova how to feel and who to be proud of. She is entitled to feel admiration and pride for Bulgarian voices- these are her feelings and it is not up to you to tell her how to feel and to correct her . By the way, it was important that Ghiaurov was Bulgarian, because in Bulgaria there was a tradition of discovering and nurturing many Great opera singers as well as love for opera. Had Ghiaurov, as talented as he was, were born in Afganistan or Chad, for example, I doubt very much that he would have achieved the international fame and recognition. Chill out, dude!

Wonderful version of this aria. I have never heard a real baritone sing it convincingly - the refrain lies simply too low. So my alltime favorites are Ghiaurov, Ruggero Raimondi, Tom Krause - I would have loved to hear Siepi or Pinza with it.

I agree about Ghiaurov in particular. For an interesting baritone swing at this aria, check out Leonard Warren, he was a great artist and, I think, did much better than most baritones.

Carissima, Qua c'è una confusione enorme. Questa era una risposta mia di un anno fa dove parlavo della voce di Ruggero Raimondi se mi ricordo bene. Avevo risposto à una ragazzina cito : - dal vivo nessun confronto. /parlando di Ghiaurov e Raimondi/ 1 Ghiaurov = 20 Raimondi e ancora... La prego lasciamo i Dei à pace... De Angelis,Pasero,Pinza,Neri etc.etc.etc.... sono delle stelle che brillano in loro modo unico sul firmamento operistico. Cordialità Nicola

The best Toreador rendition I have ever heard. Powerful and big, rich, vibrant, masculine and suave, with bel canto and legato all in one. His voice is well suited to sing this song, which most baritone have done well but not with such power. I first heard this in 1967 and has been my favourite ever since.

This is magnificent, no doubt. He is singing at the top of register and the whole aria fits the picture of a proud, very virile toreador very well. Bizet had a basso in mind but the tessitura was a little to high, consequently bass-baritones or dark baritones do it very often. Ghiaurov was a typical slavic high bass, also magnificent in Boris and Verdi. I wonder if he ever sang the profundo part Sarastro, which I don´t think he ever did. Bravissimo Toreador, with a muleta and an espada.

Yitzhahazak Ghiaurov never sung Sarastro nor Wagner. I had a talk with him about singing Wager, starting with King Marke and Hunding. Me meaned perhaps........ Be he did not. He never sung German.

Non avendo potuto ascoltare illustri bassi dei primi decenni del Novecento, soprattutto Pasero e Siepi, forse non ho una visione d'insieme nitida.Splendide voci per le poche registrazioni sentite quelle dei nostri bassi citati..e ottimi artisti altri,Pinza per esempio,Raimondi o Christoff ma quando hai la fortuna di imbatterti nella voce di Ghiaurov tutto sparisce,timbro immenso, multicolore,scintillante, con una risonanza magnetica. Neanche il seppur grande Ramey lo raggiunge,nessuno gli è pari.
dal vivo Ghiaurov aveva una voce Meravigliosa del basso vero.

This is real power and beauty all rolled up into a GREAT BASSO named Nicolai. I love his voice way down there! I also think he is a real gentleman...watch him as he sings the TRIO (Faust)....The entire trio is wondrous, but Nicolai kept his eyes on Katia and gave her hand a very polite and sweet kiss. I loved it! Have no idea of his age now.....but BRAVOOOOO!

Dear nikolatirol,It is rather presumptuous of you to tell Miss Mirkova how to feel and who to be proud of. She is entitled to feel admiration and pride for Bulgarian voices- these are her feelings and it is not up to you to tell her how to feel and to correct her . By the way, it was important that Ghiaurov was Bulgarian, because in Bulgaria there was a tradition of discovering and nurturing many Great opera singers as well as love for opera. Had Ghiaurov, as talented as he was, were born in Afganistan or Chad, for example, I doubt very much that he would have achieved the international fame and recognition. Chill out, dude!

Eccezionale interpretazione.
Wonderful version of this aria. I have never heard a real baritone sing it convincingly - the refrain lies simply too low. So my alltime favorites are Ghiaurov, Ruggero Raimondi, Tom Krause - I would have loved to hear Siepi or Pinza with it.

I agree about Ghiaurov in particular. For an interesting baritone swing at this aria, check out Leonard Warren, he was a great artist and, I think, did much better than most baritones.

Carissima, Qua c'è una confusione enorme. Questa era una risposta mia di un anno fa dove parlavo della voce di Ruggero Raimondi se mi ricordo bene. Avevo risposto à una ragazzina cito : - dal vivo nessun confronto. /parlando di Ghiaurov e Raimondi/ 1 Ghiaurov = 20 Raimondi e ancora... La prego lasciamo i Dei à pace... De Angelis,Pasero,Pinza,Neri etc.etc.etc.... sono delle stelle che brillano in loro modo unico sul firmamento operistico. Cordialità Nicola
