My dad died about 6 weeks ago. He was at home so that we could care for him there. This was his favourite piece of music. He went into a coma the day before he died, Mum and I played it to him in his coma. He opened his eyes and looked around and then went back to sleep. Glad he got to hear his favourite music as he went onto his new journey.

Hello :) Your Dad and mine clearly both loved this beautiful piece of music, which always has the power to reduce me to tears. My dear Dad died in England, early in the morning on 04Mar22. I will be ever grateful that on Sunday 27Feb22 I, via Skype, was able to play another favourite of his (Fuer Elise) which actually awoke him briefly from the deep, dementia-induced sleep he was in. It was wonderful that he recognised another favourite piece of music.

Sorry to hear about your dad. My dad died way back in 2004 and he loved this song and it was played at his funeral. Every time I hear the song it brings so much emotion and reminds me of him. I certainly have grown to appreciate these amazing songs and tenors as I've grown older. My dad's favourite tenors were Jussi Byorling and Placido Domingo but I still remember him saying that Pavarotti was possibly the best of them all.

This is indeed a gorgeous version. Another is the live concert performance with Jonas Kaufmann and Dmitri Hvorostovsky (RIP); they both put so much feeling into it. My mother truly loved this duet, and always think of her when I hear it. @@dopeydawg8954 that’s a bit harsh. There are plenty of tenors I prefer over Pavarotti. Not saying he’s a bad singer, but he certainly was not “the greatest” as everyone claims he was. I don’t blame them for thinking that, as he’s probably the only tenor most non-classical music fans have heard. It kind of makes it hard to compare. I think Pavarotti had some great roles, but I find it ironic that most of his more iconic recordings (Mostly Verdi and heavier Puccini) are not what I would consider the best. It’s subjective after all, all these guys were at the top of the world at the time and to place one completely above another is kidding yourself.

@@Beatrice7822 good for both of you to have shared such beauty!
I simply love this version of the Pearl Fishers' Duet. I had no idea that Nicolai Ghiaurov could sing something like this. He's perfection.
I was stunned that Ghiaurov could sing this. Would have thought that his voice was too heavy for it, but he's marvelous.
This is indeed a gorgeous version. Another is the live concert performance with Jonas Kaufmann and Dmitri Hvorostovsky (RIP); they both put so much feeling into it. My mother truly loved this duet, and always think of her when I hear it. I was so lucky to be able to see the Met Opera's exquisite production of The Pearl Fishers/Les Pecheurs des Perles with her, just a couple of years before her passing.
My dather died aat 7.10.2023 One of his favourite songs. He was a great leader for choires and solist. But he could not find someone who sing with him this beautiful song 😢.
This is the Zenith for me when listening to Pavatotti! The beautiful pairing of these two is breathtaking! The extream differences in both voices just kills me emotionally! It makes me cry every time.😂😂😂😂
I'm really surprised at Ghiaurov. I didn't know he could sing so lightly and lyrically. Pavarotti is stunning. I can't think of more beautiful singing from him that I have heard
One of the best Perlfishers duets in existence. Maestros Pavarotti and Ghuiarov at their best.
I just discovered this amazing Opera Duet - and listening to Pavarotti sing, unbelievable... What I wouldn't give to have been able to see him sing live.....

I had the great pleasure to see him perform in a solo concert many years ago. I was close enough to not only hear but ts see him. He was not only a great artist but he had the ability to make every person there feel like he was singing to them alone. An evening I will never forget. BRAVO
The most beautiful version, I have heard. These two voices were made for each other.

For me, it's not the voices so much (though they are stunning), it's the sheer feeling. Friendships which have weathered the storms of life are true indeed.
great recording, love the way Ghiaurov blends with Pavarotti, as much as possible, that's experience........ and makes this a great recording,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
I just can't get rid of the goosebumps on my skin... These two artists equal each other in their powerful and mighty, but also wonderful and beautiful, clear voices. Simply magnificent... Thank you for this wonderful gift.
I've heard these two sing together a few times before; they did Mefistofele together with Mirella Freni, they did Turandot and Lucia di Lammermoor together with Joan Sutherland, and now this. I mean... DAMN. There are many perfect tenor/baritone combos in recorded opera, and this is one of them.
I cannot but weep for the utter beauty of this ethereal and deeply moving musical miracle...

First heard this piece over fifty years ago, thanks to my Mum. To this day, it still makes the hairs on the back of my neck rise.
The Bjorling-Merrill rendition is the best version which I think 99% of people would agree, but this version is pretty close with the purity of Pavarotti's voice at its best and the strength of Ghiaurov baritone-bass. Excellent recording.
