Nick Hancock apologises to Luke Chadwick on BBC Breakfast (2020)

During mental health awareness of 2020 in lockdown after ex Manchester United footballer Luke Chadwick admitted his mental health sunk with his career after being used as punchline on They Think It's All Over, the host held up his hands admitting and apologising for being naive at the time at how mean spirited things could get on the show.
Now when are we going to see one from David Baddiel?

It was the 2000s. The decade of toxicity.

Amazes me that people don’t understand or care (most likely the latter in this case) how joking about someone’s appearance can affect them. No use apologising, the damage is already done.

It was the early 2000s where we thought it was light hearted banter and not hurtful/hateful.

Nick Hancock didnt need to apologise. He took the piss out of so many people as did Rory McGrath and it was all for banter

Sometimes banter can knock one's self esteem badly though which is the whole point of why he apologised

Ah that old chestnut, “it was banter”. It’s like that discards any unnecessary offence caused cos “if was banter”. It was plain and simply wrong and could have caused and most probably did Luke Chadwick mild to extreme mental health issues. Nothing wrong with a bit of Micky taking especially if it gets a laugh but not if it causes offence to someone. Luckily this kind of humour is dieing out and people that you can be funny without being a dick.

A hollow apology. This man knew exactly what he was doing and he did it with a degree of ferocity. Physical features or skin colour should never be a topic for so called comedy but Hancock made a career out of it. Luckily we don't see much of him these days.

I don't necessarily disagree with the entirety of this response, I would just say that 20-25 odd years ago that sort of demeaning humour was generally considered the norm then especially during that period where dumb drinking, casual sexism and general grotesque anti intellectual laddish banter became fashionable, you could make all sorts of dodgy comments about 'pulling ugly slags' and people would just lap it up. This isn't an excuse for it but rather an acknowledgement that thankfully for the times have changed and we've for the most part learnt that insult humour doesn't stand up Nick could have easily been on the defensive and doubled down like David Baddiel has (now he's a bleeding racist hypocrite) so I'd give kudos to him there. The ferocity, that's what supporting a crap club like Stoke does to you lol

What a load of old shite you're speaking. The privilege on you to declare yourself spokeperson for what is and isn't allowed to pass as humour is so arrogantly astounding.

Good on you Nick. It was funny at the time but no one stopped to consider Luke’s feelings. He wasn’t a comedian or a James Corden who deserves criticism he was just trying to play football
