***** North American fans just sit around and only cheer certain moments, and all they do is say go (insert team here) go. European fans actually sing and chant and have fun at the games. If you ever get the chance to go to a game i highly suggest it. SC Bern is nuts! Great atmosphere!

It's a shame, that one of the most important things is missing in this video - the sound. Mainly in the european part, because even if the pictures and short clips are looking great, the actual chanting and "singing" of the crowd is one of the main differences between North America and European style. In north america, most teams have only one or two things like "go team x go" etc and you can hear it only few times in the match etc, whereas most european fans have dozens of them and they are chanting and roaring the entire match and it makes the atmosphere so great. Even though i would really like to visit NHL match live one day, because it is special in some ways and even the atmosphere there can be great (but really different) i am glad that i live in europe (when it comes to hockey)

I went to an NHL game, they told me we would be at the "rough" section with the "crazy" fans. It was 2-3 guys occasionally shouting in a moderate way. Lame support but otherwise amazing to be there.

There aren't any fans in NHL. Just spectators.

Football is the biggest and one of the oldest sports in Europe. The supporter culture has crossed over to hockey as well. In Sweden, Germany, Austria and Switzerland where football is huge as well as hockey, a lot of supporters follow both sports and bring the same passion that has been a part of football over to hockey. Flags, scarves, banners and chants are a massive part of football and hockey in Europe. And sports are more of a working class pastime. While you do get suits in the stands in Europe, the clubs have gone out of their way to have cheaper tickets so that everyone can enjoy it. The clubs put a huge emphasis on fans and fan culture since having a loud crowd at home is intimidating for the visitors and creates an exciting atmosphere.

America=best players Europe=best supporters :D

mats persso Canadians, Americans, Russians, ..... You're a fucking idiot the stats literally show that if europeans left the NHL there would be a total... Offfff ....... 4.1% of the NHL gone. Canada makes up 67.3% of the NHL players and the U.S. makes up 24.1% and Russia makes up 4.5%. So yeah we'd be just fine without the europeans LMFAOOOOOOO

This is part of the reason why I refuse to watch NHL and just stick to European hockey. It's not all business, the fans are better, and I like the big ice game more anyway. And I'm from the States...I remember pulling an all nighter for one of Medveščak's games last year on the road against Amur, something I never did for an NHL team. If I want North American hockey, I will take college any day. It's the only version of the sport here in North America with passion.

You have no idea. yes the fans are not so into it but thats just 70% the other 30% are 100% behind the Team just as any other european fan, you may do not understand the NHL system. But those in our European league is corrupt, i mean look at it how the same teams keep winning just like in soccer the team with the most money gets the best players (i am no dirty commie ;) ) the NHL system is the most fairest with the entry draft every year for the young skaters. I am from Europe and a fan of the New York Islanders for 15 years, staying awake untill 5 in the morning to watch games is very regular to me. You cant say NHL is shit because its obviously diffrent hockey than European. The smaller ice makes the game faster and more attractive too

The NHL has more fans during games. But in europe, fans singing, jumping and do crazy things and never take breaks. The NHL fans only use applause for the most times...

Size doesn't matter. Europeans have more heart than any amount of americans/canadians can beat. Where they beat us on the ice we beat them tenfolds on the grandstand. Less is more. Much more in some occations. But fore some years now europe have beat NHL on the ice internationaly so i don't know if we really are being beaten there ;) Europe is catching up on that part year after year now.

I'm actually Canadian and my team is the oilers and idk if u know but the last six years they haven't made playoffs but I never stopped watching their games.

As a Scot who's countrymen spread football all over the world and who also helped to (along with our Irish cousins) started the first (ice) hockey in Canada, why can we not just be grateful for all the differences. I love the North American approach to hockey but I also love the Russian and European spectacles as shown here. Providing no one gets hurt it is all great imo.

I'm from sweden and i stay up most of the nights looking at NHL i don't care where its played or who's playing i watch it anyway! So i totally agree with you :)

I think the German Hockey League DEL is on an low Level but 200 of this supporters(not importing from which Team they are)make more noise as this 20.000 NHL "fans" in an NHL Game.That same say the most NHL Players where come to Europe on his last Days that the atmosphere in Switzerland,Austria,Germany,finnland,sweden or other european countrys are much more better as in the NHL.

In USA American football and baseball and basketball are the main sports, there are lots of Hockey teams in the US but Hockey barley gets any footage I wish they broadcast some European hockey games too. I am Canadian and here hockey is not only entertainment it's a way of life, I really want to come to Europe and see a European hockey game because it seems like a really awesome environment to be in.

Trust me it is an aswesome enviroment, i have experience from SHL.

You may also notice that much of it is before and after the actual game. They aren't really missing anything they are just putting on a show. It happens in football (soccer) too.

Im Finn and i once visited Boston and went to Bruins - Senators hockey match and i have to say the feeling was good there. When Bruins scored, totally random American hugged me like they've won stanley cup. But have to say one thing, So big arenas, so little voice.

I do agree with you. I was just replying to the guy he was trying to say that European fans are better because we arn't as active. I didn't know there was a standard to what a good fan is or how you can quantify it. All fans of hockey are equally awesome because hockey is the best sport!

I think fans enjoy their team, it's a personal thing. When you get here to Europe , it's like "have I been missing out on this all the time"? It's a whole different fan culture here in Europe and think they brought it from soccer. A hockey game here is exciting on a whole different level.

I lived in Chicago for several years and I've seen A LOT of hockey in Chicago and on TV but I've never ever seen anything close to the passion the fans in Europe show. All the cheers in NA are "Let's go *insert team* Let's go!" and "Go *insert team* go!* In NHL they're called franchises who can move from city to city like a circus. In Europe we got teams with a history who can win or loose promotion to the big leagues. The teams got fans who stay through think and thin.

It's pretty good, but the SHL is slightly better overall I think. It's hard to tell because most NLA, SHL and Liiga teams could mix in one single league without much difference. The KHL has excellent top teams but the bottom ranking is pretty bad... The first 5-7 teams are strong and the rest just fill the remaining places. In my opinion: SHL ≥ NLA ≥ Liiga > DEL ≥ Czech Extraliga. The KHL would extend from above the SHL to the DEL I guess.

I think CHL has shown that Swiss teams are on average slightly below Swedish and Finnish teams. If they formed a common league there would surely be a few Swiss champions as well but outside ZSC, HCD, SCB I don't think any Swiss teams would be on top of Sweden/Finland over a season... not yet. I hope we soon will! Greetings from Switzerland :) oh and about KHL I think we see that at Spengler Cup often, their teams tend to have world class offense but their defense often looks weak even against a better DEL team.

I know that the nhl would be nothing without the europeans ( im from gemany btw ), but what i wanted to say is that the best players play in america and those include really much of our european guys ;)

if you want to see the difference just look at tis video or some other videos from fans from different teams in Europe. Just search something like Europe Hockey Ultras or Sweden, Germany and Switzerland Hockey Ultras. You will see some great fans, stuff you just would not see in NHL.

I admit I like the atmosphere at European games better during the regular season however during the nhl playoffs nothing beats that.

Just bought tickets to the world junior championships in Vancouver and most decent tickets already gone. Expect half the games to be 17,000 + and at least 12000 for other games. When they are played in Europe they get 3-5,000 and half are disguised as empty seats (or a Skoda taking up prime viewing in the corners). Btw ticket price was cnd $1,800 for 9 game package without gold medal game (alone will be $500-1000). Not cheap!

I live in Canada. Been to Europe tho and seen Euro fan culture at soccer games which is alot like you see in Europe Hockey videos. I have also been to many Leaf games here. I can tell you that in NHL it is a sit down family friendly atmosphere and once and a while fans do a simple chant like "Go team Go". In Europe supporters stand up, sing all game long and much more rowdy. Believe me NHL fans are not that loud at all in comparrison to Europe fans. Thats my opinion.

I think NHL has a bigger fan base, but European fans are creative when it comes to cheering their team on.

i support my team with my friends every game! but i like the watch the game instead of trying to make a spectacle of myself! then again....the nhl has players worth watching :D

I can only speak for my team and teams in Sweden, Most teams have tons(atleast my team) of songs that are all about love for the team. Ofc there is alot of songs about your rivals aswell. But thats how we grew up. Nothing wrong with either way of doing things. NA traditions on doing things may differ and its all about cultur and whatever floats your boat

sure its easy to say that when its 5 dollars a ticket... but here its 70 or 80 bucks for standing areas and about 140 or 150 per cheap upper deck seats per game and I don't know about you guys but our arenas hold upward of 20,000 people and hundreds of thousands bid on the tickets so it gets to pricey for fans no matter how dedicated they are
