    Another great trick is to use your pointer finger and thumb to help you "swing out " the point of interest carbons and still get the perspectives right. Just designate one finger to be each component and flip or half flip to go from bond to newman or newman to bond (half flip or turn).

  • @Leah4sci

    @Leah4sci

    2 жыл бұрын

    Wedges show atoms or groups that are being projected OUT of the page, while dashes show atoms or groups that are being projected INTO the page. When converting Newman projections to bond line notation, it's important to retain the 3-D configuration of the molecule in question.

    How do you know going from the line dash/wedge projection to Newman if they are staggered or eclipsed?

  • @Leah4sci

    @Leah4sci

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for watching and commenting! If the dash and wedge substituents of each carbon in the central bond are on the same side of that bond (both above or both below), it will be an eclipsed conformation. If the dash and wedge substituents are on opposite sides of the central C-C bond, it will be a staggered conformation. A staggered conformation is always more stable, and you can also rotate around the C-C bond to produce alternate conformations than what is initially drawn.

    No difference other than how it looks on paper. Remember molecules are 3D and always moving around in space. the 2 versions described are just different ways of looking at it.

    I can't get it. Why right side is wedge? What's with the moving can't visualize it.

  • @Leah4sci

    @Leah4sci

    3 жыл бұрын

    Sorry you're having problems with this. I assigned the right side a wedge because the central C-C bond in the Newman projection is being rotated 90 degrees to the left. Therefore, the substituents on the right will now be oriented as coming out of the page. The opposite way to work this problem would be to assign the substituents on the left side a wedge, and that would mean rotating the molecule 90 degrees to the right. Hope this helps!
