Resonance Made Easy! Finding the Most Stable Resonance Structure - Organic Chemistry

Resonance Made Easy! Are you struggling with Resonance structures or just don't really get what's going on when you do it? Well it's just the movement of electrons from one region to another. This used to be one of my most dreaded things to do in Orgo I after NMRs. But eventually I figured out a better way of thinking about it and I show you guys in this video! Don't forget to check out the "bloops" at the end and see the struggles of Orgo Made Easy. =D

its imperative to memorize when the main elements used in Orgo are at a neutral formal charge. O at 2 bonds 2 lone pairs; N at 3 bonds 1 lone pair; C at 4 bonds 0 lone pairs; halogens at 3 lone pairs 1 bond. If you remember these rules it makes everything clear. It just becomes an easy logic puzzle (you can also calculate formal charges on anything if you're not sure by applying the formula: Group number of element - (bonds attached to element + lone pair electrons))

All those university lectures I sat through and I didn't understand a damn thing. Mostly bc the professor didn't put much emphasis on the overall key point; or if while he/she did, I got distracted by the person sitting in front of me or the person next to me or the guy diagonally from me poking his nose mid-lecture. This cleared my cloud of "resonance structures are too abstract"...thank you for making my life better by making this topic less anxiety-producing. Also, I didn't have to pause and rewind as I do with a lot of videos because you emphasized the purpose of resonance structures so clearly. It makes it easier to not get sidetracked mid problem when I clearly know the end purpose. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Make more videos! And I already liked and subscribed!

It was extremely good and intuitive your name is frank and your teaching technique is also "frank" keep it up brother , it was just gooooood. and I want to ask that what if we are given with a neutral molecule then also we have to follow the same steps?

+Sarthak Sharma Thanks! :D It's always great to hear feedback from students like you, makes it all worth it in the end. :] And yes for neutral molecules, you have to look for atoms with lone pairs (usually NItrogen or Oxygen) that can resonante and move them to form double bonds usually.

Can you cover formal charges? I watched your other resonance vids. This is the best one if you have a basic understanding for resonance! I am glad I did not give up watching. Thanks.

Thanks for watching Melissa! I’ll add that to the list 👍🏼🙂. Any specific Qs about formal charges? Also if you or any friends are looking for a tutor my team and I still have availabilities and rates range from $80-$180/HR depending on the tutor.
