4.5 Newman Projections | Organic Chemistry
Chad explains how to draw Newman projections for butane and 2-chlorobutane from bond line structures. He begins by providing a 3D model of butane and matching up the staggered conformations and eclipsed conformations of the model with the corresponding Newman projections. He points out the anti conformation and gauche conformations of butane and further explains the definition of a gauche interaction and its relevance for determining relative energies between the different staggered conformations for the conformational analysis of alkanes. Chad explains how steric strain and torsional strain are responsible for these energy differences and stability of the various conformers. He finishes the lesson by showing how to determine the lowest energy conformation of 2-chlorobutane by comparing the number of gauche interactions in each staggered conformation and the sizes of the groups involved in these interactions.

I am a less than a week away from my second O-Chem exam and am pulling an all nighter to review some foggy concepts. I started by watching some of the bigger channels because I am used to seeing their videos pop up first and they are generally helpful. I randomly stumbled across your channel and I am so grateful. You make these concepts so easy to understand and your explanations are concise. I hope you get the recognition you deserve because you have changed my life! Thank you so much!!!

You helped me get through both general chemistry one and two! I am in my final chemistry class, ochem, and I can already tell it’s going to be a great semester because of you. I hope to be as great of a science teacher as you after I graduate!

Great lesson once again! Just wanted to point out that videos 17, 18, and 24 in this playlist are private videos and I don't think anybody is able to watch them.

Glad you enjoyed it Tanvir! A couple of those were deleted videos from an interrupted upoload...I didn't realize I had to formally removed them from the playlist after deleting them. The last was the lesson that was just posted. I typically upload a video a couple days before releasing it so I can at the time stamps, description, tags, etc. so most of the time there will probably be a video or two at the end of the playlist that are private...know they'll be released soon. Happy Studying!
really...... you're the best, Chad!!!! I just saved up so much time and energy by listening to your lecture!!!!!!

I can't believe howe easy you make this. Thanks again! Just a quick question, when looking down the bond line formula, how would we know the chlorine would be coming at us or away from us if we were just told the formula "Draw the most stable confirmation of 2-Bromo-Butane". Is there a sort of a trick when knowing this or does it not matter if it is dashed or wedged if we are just told the formula?
Thanks Chad!

Organic Chemistry is helping everyone just like he is doing. No one is monopolizing anything.
You mentioned Gauche interactions occur when you have two interactions that do not involve H atoms. How come CH3 and CH3 result in a gauche interaction? When in the video you said CH3 + H is NOT a gauche, 11:09

Hi Rohit! In a staggered conformation, if either of the two adjacent groups is a hydrogen atom, then it NOT a gauche interaction. Ultimately, both groups need to be larger than a single hydrogen atom for it to be labeled as a gauche interaction. So H + H or CH3 + H would not be considered gauche interactions because at least 1 of the 2 adjacent groups is a single H atom. But CH3 + CH3 is a gauche interaction as the 2 adjacent groups interacting are definitely both larger than a single H atom. Hope this helps!
