4.6 Cycloalkanes and Cyclohexane Chair Conformations | Organic Chemistry
Chad introduces the conformations of cycloalkanes showing how the size of the ring affects ring strain, which is a combination of angle strain, torsional strain, and steric strain, and then shows the relative stability of cycloalkanes. He then focuses on cyclohexane and introduces the various conformations it can adopt including the chair and boat conformations as well as the twist boat conformations.
Chad then explains how to draw chair conformations of cyclohexane and ring flips, identifying the axial and equatorial positions and the preference by substituents for the equatorial position due to 1,3-diaxial interactions. There are two chair conformations, and Chad explains how to draw both and how to determine which is the more stable chair conformation. He further shows how to build a model of cyclohexane and how to perform chair flips with a model kit.
He then reveals how to distinguish between cis and trans isomers of substituted cyclohexanes as well as how to draw the chair conformations of substituted cyclohexanes and how to distinguish which is lower energy (i.e. more stable). He also shows how to draw Newman chair conformations and how these can also facilitate identify cis and trans isomers.

Hello Chad. Could you please do a video about the chair conformation of glucose? How to draw it from a Haworth projection?
Thank you so much I love this! but I have a question, for very last example why did u count counter clockwise? not clockwise like other examples?

Hi Chad I am back!! I hope youre well! Do you have any videos on how to draw newman projections for cyclohexanes? Thank you in any case :)
What model kit are you using?
Hi Chad! Quick question, if I'm given the name of a cyclohexane compound and I need to draw it, how will I know which substituent is a wedge and which is a dash? Just to make sure I get my chair conformation correct afterwards..

Hi Bunny! If you have two substituents NOT on chiral centers then the name will have to be labeled cis or trans. Take for example cis-1-ethyl-4-methylcyclohexane. Being cis, both substituents would be wedges or both would be dashes. The worse situation would be if they were on chiral centers. If you don't even know yet what a chiral center is I won't be surprised as they are covered in chapter 5. For this reason we would often avoid such a question at this juncture. But if you did see one (like on the final exam) the chiral centers would be assigned absolute configurations of R or S which would allow you to figure out their stereochemistry. Hope this helps!
