Emperor Turhan felt similarly except that unlike Londo even in his youth his choices were restricted by the weight of his position.

It’s true. When I was young I could stay out all night with my friends and do whatever I wanted, except I didn’t have any money. Now I have money, but I spend Friday nights at home with my wife and kids. I have to eat the healthy food my wife makes instead of pizza and beer while watching a big dumb loud movie. All of its true for even the least influential people.

I still say that it was G'Kar's forgiveness of him that gave Londo the strength to accept the long painful road ahead. Perhaps in those moments Lando realized the truth about his vision - that G'Kar would be his truest friend (Vir was really more like a son) and would deliver him at the end. Amusing that it turned out to be his choice of Timov as wife that would ultimately save Londo from the fire that awaited him.

@@mirawenya Pestilence, Famine, and Death. In this case, he chose the wife he said represented Death, who was the most straightforward and easy to read of the 3. If she wanted him dead, she would plunge the dagger straight into his heart(s) herself. Probably after monologuing. Whereas the other two, as proven by their appearance in the series, would go in roundabout plots so that the only way they get caught is if you do lots of digging beyond what the facts can prove. So in essence, by accepting Death, he accepted his own mortality.

@@mirawenya This is from the trilogy of novels about Centauri Prime by Peter David, which are regarded as canonical. Empress Timov has been banished from the royal palace early in Londo's regent, to protect her from the Drakh because she was too inquisitive and in danger of discovering them. As Londo and G'Kar are killing each other, Londo has a vision of the fires of damnation reaching for him. In his vision, his calls out to his love. The spirit of the dancer, Adira Tyree, who was Londo's lover, answers and tries to help him escape the fire, but it isn't enough. At the same time, the scene shifts to the elderly, bedridden Empress Timov, who declares: "Oh, NOW he needs me!" She then dies, and her spirit comes to Londo. His love for Adira was passionate, but he had grown to love and respect Timov as well. Together they are able to save Londo.

Why do people like this show so much? I'm not being rude, I'm genuinely asking. I only saw a few episodes and thought the dialogues were pretty bad and acting in general was mediocre. Maybe I'm just stupid

  • @mayra3277

@@flammifer451 The beginning is a bit rough. They had to make a lot of actor changes, didn't have much of a budget, and (from the perspective of someone who wasn't around when this show started airing) the visuals just look cheesy at first. But the great thing is the story. And you only see how it all really connects together after... maybe half of season 1? But this story is wonderful and still absolutely relevant in the 2020s. (The acting also gets better, I promise - Londo here is one of the cherries on the cake.) If you're genuinely interested in picking up B5 again but want to avoid getting bored by stuff you didn't enjoy the first time, some do suggest skipping season 1 entirely or skipping some less important episodes and coming back to them in a rewatch. You could technically also start with the movie In the Beginning, which is pretty great, but it does spoil several later plot points (as the name implies it's a prequel). If I may recommend an episode from season 2 that doesn't spoil too much and needs little background knowledge but is among my personal favourites: season 2, episode 18. "Confessions and Lamentations." Or you can, if you have the time, give yourself until mid-season 2. Judging it by the first few episodes doesn't do this show justice - even though I like season 1 a lot I would even say you shouldn't judge it by that alone. The first time I watched the first episode of this show I spent ten minutes not getting over how the aliens looked (and I was a Trekkie, it wasn't like I'd never seen actors with stuff glued to their heads), and then just fell asleep. A few weeks later I was sure I was going to watch this show all the way to the end. Another four months later I sobbed through the entire last episode and then watched it right again :)

@@mayra3277 Wow, thanks for the answer. It eventually clicked with me after the "Believers" episode. It reminds me a lot of the first Mass Effect game (which is my favourite from the trilogy). The "game" part of the game was pretty bad (and because of that many people just skipped it), but the atmosphere, characters, story and overall feel of personal adventure were amazing.

@@flammifer451 That's amazing to hear! And hell yes, I hope others follow your example :) Believers was /the/ episode for me too! I already decided I liked B5 at the end of Parliament of Dreams, but then came Believers... and well. I was already a Trekkie and DS9 was my favourite, so I wondered how this episode would have played on Trek. TOS would not have done it. On TNG Picard would have found a legal loophole and all would have been happy. On Voyager Janeway would have forced the doctor, and later the parents would have begrudgedly thanked her for saving their child. On DS9, Bashir would have wanted to operate, Sisko would have talked him out of it, the kid would have died naturally and then Sisko and Bashir would have had a deep conversation. This could only have happened on B5. (That's not to say Trek is bad, not at all. The vibes are just different. I watch and like both, even if B5 is my favourite.) And on Mass Effect: I'm not a gamer, but have heard that parts of it were actually inspired from B5 elements, so you caught that well! B5 may be in a bit of a similar boat, with occasionally very bad guests stars, effects that don't look stellar anymore today, and obviously low budget sometimes. But the story, the universe, the characters - they shine. Stay tuned, for there will be more 'the same premise could have happened on Trek but this is bolder' moments, but also some very uniquely B5 stories... and speeches. Some darn great speeches. Enjoy! (And please, please avoid the Internet - B5 is old enough that spoiler warnings are rare. I spoiled myself several important plot points when I first watched it two years ago. You might want to avoid that)

Londo's story is a tragedy of Shakespearean proportions. He was always motivated by his love for Centauri Prime, yet still made decisions that would to it's ruin. If Londo can find redemption at the end, maybe we can too?

To also think that this scene does become one of more anguish when you revisit it after Season 04. Because, by Season 01, you always interpret Londo and G'kar hanging each other to the death as bitter enemies who'd never reconcile, just like their people. Enemies whom would forever be at each other's throats. But after Season 04 you realize - All this time it was a doomed man asking his friend to save him, only the Keeper resisted.

Londo is one of those characters who made all his mistakes and deserved his fate.. but I still feel terrible for him. He was written so perfectly I can't actually hate him. Eventually he accepts his fate and owns up to his mistakes, but is trapped by them. He does turn the corner and start doing the right things, but by them its Way to late. Tragic is barely enough to describe his life
