That was no battle, it was a slaughter. Shadows did not sustain one hit.

It's also a clue that the younger races weapons can at least damage the shadow ships

I love Babylon 5's use of 'attack vector' Early on there's a whole plot of 'are they on an attack vector or docking vector?' that became an entire injoke with my watch group

I wish, we'd seen more battles like this in the war, massive, fuck of Shadow fleets, just annihlating everything in their path.

Not sure this could have called a battle more like a one-sided slaughter, ;) Great scene though

I don't think any sci fi show has better space battles for the past 30 years. They're easy to follow and exciting.

The more I watch this in the context of the show the more I realise this scene demonstrates not just technical insufficiency but a huge gap in doctrine. Narn heavy cruisers have immense forward-facing firepower; you can see in the way they destroy a Shadow vessel if they can hold their guns on them. However, their mobility is designed around an almost two dimensional space, and their ability to fire into the z axis is very limited. That is one of the crucial reasons why the Shadows are so effective here; they can move to and engage from any position, while the Narn are designed to combat Centauri ships with very similar characteristics. The Shadows also have a crucial weakness; their ships experience crippling pain from incoming fire, which is exploited later. Terrific show writing.

I think it was more plot armour. That and the Shadows didn't want to take over the galaxy, they just wanted to teach the younger races that their way was right. Now if you will excuse me, I will be in the corner with my... associates.

Narn combat ship have one major problem. It can only shoot forward. It should have a few turrets plus missles launchers.

Always felt destroying it was a waist for the newfound 'co-existance' that had formed between all of the races. The whole "its a hazard to navigation" was just a poorly written script to give the writers/directers a reason to destroy it and have a definitive 'ending'. Had this been a real-world (or would the term be Real-galaxy?) scenario, it would have remained operational as it was, a place for the different races to send diplomats/traders/even tourists who wish to see other cultures but were unsure a bout going to other planets. If it needed more crew i'd have gotten it, likely a mixed-crew due to the nature of the place so no one side could claim to 'run' it. Why 'throw away' a centralized, neutral meeting hub? If any arguments came out in the IA afterwards, you'd have to find a random arse neutral area/planet to have the discussions at, and it'd end up being a different place every time.

i always disliked these super boring beam battles. beam there, ship explodes. and again, and again and again. i know this show is old, but still. There never was any tention, why even bothering with a cgi scene when its clear that the narn ships have 0 chance to get an upperhand in the fight.

The Narn ships, leaving hyper in normal space, needed to recharge their hyper drives, and this required time, which the Shadows did not give them.

i love just how strange B5 was in its presentation. so many creative risks in this show. many of the space battles are comprehensible but visually confusing, aliens in strange ships using strange weapons we can’t understand. this show leaned so hard into cosmic horror and i love that about it. the way that the shadow ship fires its little gumdrop attack or whatever is really interesting. the surface shines and flexes, and bounces a strange shape into space. that shape explodes. if space battles between aliens are ever to happen, if we are ever to participate, we may witness mind-boggling events. the only thing we may truly understand is that they possess powers we do not.

Always bothered me a bit when they claim the station will be a hazard to navigation and then turn it into 250 million tones of drifting space debris. It would make much more sense to attach some thrusters and launch it into the local star.

Londo is one of those characters who made all his mistakes and deserved his fate.. but I still feel terrible for him. He was written so perfectly I can't actually hate him. Eventually he accepts his fate and owns up to his mistakes, but is trapped by them. He does turn the corner and start doing the right things, but by them its Way to late. Tragic is barely enough to describe his life
