The difference between Horner and Toto, and the reason Gunther cracked it, is equity in the team..... given Williams is owned by a private equity firm they could offer Newey 10% ownership to return and it might be why Albono re-signed...

Still not enough imo & there’s no way investors dilute their equity for Newey. Williams only cost $200m in 2021, say it’s tripled to $600m of which 10% is still only $60m. Which is nothing compared to the huge yearly figures rumoured by Aston & Ferrari. Also a lot easier for both of them to offer huge salaries on road card projects than Williams.

@@mickmckpng3153 It's a very long shot with little chance of meaniful success. It's a not publicly listed company so it's hard to truly profit from any rise in value from singing him. Any growth comes from long term on track gains. F1 fans are fickle, Newey is the fave toy of today but the hype will die down vastly once he settles down & especially if the team he's at doesn't deliver. I recall similar sentiments in 2014-2020, Newey was never mentioned. Just don't think it makes sense for Williams, they have a thousand other key improvements to make before getting Newey. James Allison is making great long term changes, that ought to be the focus.

Until I reached 1:38 where he says he has copies to give about F1 24 - while I was listening to this video on my second monitor - on my first I just finished up the F1 24 Champions Edition order 🤣awesome! But once I already did won a free copy - the F1 13 edition after answering three questions right for Codemasters Quiz - I was quite lucky to win it among hundreds. It's a shame it was a game I did not played much. Someone else might've enjoyed it more. But again, I never hoped to win it. But this F1 24 i have every intention on playing it a lot and following whole career mode - which is why I just bought it. Very glad to hear that you are the voice of the race engineer! Looking forward to 28th of May for the release. PS. Regarding Newey, there is lot more logic about Williams, but I cannot help but believe that for a man aged then 76, with his career, not to have Ferrari in his CV and with all he put in his book, would be like unfinished business. I don't know what else could be as much as motivating to get up for work other than Ferrari. But yeah, both very much possible. Great insight!

Albon might also just be playing the long game beyond F1. He grew up with a tumultuous family life, to say the least. Williams locking him in for a higher salary and more years than others were preparing to pay, might have him secure a future beyond F1, for himself and siblings, here and now. Sure he'll be set for life, but in those two year he may well double or triple his net worth, and he may well have (siblings with) business ideas to take on. I'd love Williams to get Newey for sure, what a challenge. But how involved is he prepared to get?

Marc, do mechanics have preferences in working with a certain type of technical director or leading design engineer? For example, you told in the past that Newey doesn't care about whether or not his designs are easy to work on by the mechanics (which makes sense, F1 mechanics have solving the related problems as part of their job, to a bigger extent than a normal mechanic). But are there other qualities people might not think about when it comes to the policy makers on the design floor vs the mechanics that are in benefit of the latter?

I like Albon, he seems like a decent driver, but I think saying teams are "clambering over each other" to sign him, is really overestimating the strength of his position. Let's not forget, he did have a stint in the Red Bull and it was disastrous - granted so did Gasly, Max does that to people. There's a whole host of other drivers who teams would rather sign first (VER, HAM, LEC, NOR, SAI, ALO etc) Given that, it makes much more sense for him to commit to Williams - Newey or not, where he's got stability and will be the lead driver, and things are changing everywhere as part of the rebuilding like you say. Having watched his hour long podcast appearance, seems clear that he is a fairly self aware and smart guy and prioritises his mental health too, which being a lead driver in a stable environment (same team) would help.

It wouldn’t surprise me if the sainz and newey situation wind up being somewhat linked - if newey goes to Williams, I think Carlos going to Williams is absolutely on the table. Conversely, Adrian going to Ferrari pretty much narrows it down to take the money and tank a season for Audi or be a rental for Mercedes. TBH, I think neither option is fundamentally great for Carlos. I think he (rightfully) wants to have more solid prospects for 2026 in terms of contending for wins and whatnot, and a Williams+Newey lashup could in theory deliver that more reliably than the genuine enigma that is Audi and the riddle that is Mercedes.

I think the rules in 2026 will shake things up. Ferrari and Merc will best placed to win. I think with the rule changes and a new engine will hurt RB so think that max will move in 2026 or take a year out. Frank Williams regreted not giving Newey a share of the team before he left, in the 90's, so my view is that Williams is an option, as is Mclaren, as Zak is a good friend and the way Zak answered recent questions made me think this was a real possibilitiy. Vestappen likely to win 2025 then take a year out or love to Merc. Albon staying at Williams is strange, not wrong, but it does imply that their is something in the pipeline, but im not sure where else he could have gone for longer than a year, Redbull may be, but it didnt work out last time with Max and they like drivers that are good striaght away and not slow burners like Albon, Sainz, Perez, Gazly who were all on th books at Redbull at some point.

I think, that for Newey to go to Williams, they have to offer him something he always wanted, namely, to own a part of the team. If Williams somehow can offer that to Newey I think he'll at least consider going there. However, there is the engine part obviously.. the engines will be way more important in the overal balance of things, and I think Honda (with Aramco) and Merc (with Petronas) have the best chances of getting things more right than others. Regards Newey. Too many rumours me thinks. The topic of moving, or not is a moot one. My understanding is he spends lots of time/lives? In South Africa anyway. Well, his manager (EJ) says that they are neighbours. I’m guessing Newey has a few homes, so adding a place in Italy is not likely to be a deal breaker. Isn’t it known that Rory Byrne is based in Thailand and yet is still on the books at Ferrari. I’d certainly not want to work in an organisation funded by PE (private equity). Anyone knows what PE is all about. It’s only ROI (return on investment). They are known as ruthless in cost management rather than investment. The likes of Ferrari have bottom pits of money to ensure they get back to the top of F1. That money is needed for the kind of development Newey would be part of. Really looking forward to the end of the rumours.

Williams is progressing but it still has the turning circle of an oil tanker vs likes of Aston/Ferrari who have very recent evidence of major progress & investment paying off. Newley’s previous work environments & access to faculties/resources is a different world compared to what Williams can offer. People forget how demanding Newley’s philosophy can be, he used to churn though parts/upgrades/tests at an insane rate pre cost cap & is lot more demanding on cockpit/layouts & mechanics/engineers than Williams could handle. It would be like fitting Ferrari engine in a 2002 Nissan Micra.

WHY would Sainz be "leader" at RBR?? He was well off Max's performance in their debut as team mates, and Sainz was an old man in cars, compared to Max. Even at Audi, there's Hulk who looks to age gracefully, and had Sainz's mark at Renault after his Red Bull education.

There's zero romanticism with Newey joining Williams nor has Newey publicly claimed he'd like to work with Albon, James or Williams the way he has with Lewis and Ferrari... The only reason why Lewis is taking this risk, is surely because Newey had already signed. All roads lead to Red.

@@F1Elvis A Ferrari/Newey ending is more fantastical. You couldn't write a better Newey tale if he managed to elevate Ferrari to a winning championship. What a way for the curtains to fall. We've already had a Williams/Newey dominated period fighting Ferrari. Now he has an option to join... Wow! You may disagree but a Ferrari ending is far more romantic than a "360" back to Williams.

Newey is going to Ferrari, according to most sources over the weekend its a done deal. If Newey went to Williams (or Aston) , Merc wouldn't supply engines, its as simple as that, but Merc can't influence anything at Ferrari, this is why Williams and Aston WON'T get Newey, Merc have Aston and Williams by the balls.

Hi Elvis Agree with many of your listeners about Adrian going to a team which could offer part ownership. I was in a similar situation where I was a designer responsible for the success of a company and it eats away at you if you are not rewarded by a partnership or shareholding. I ended up setting up my own company but Adrian could only ( IMO ) go to teams that are able to offer a share. Williams or Aston ? ? ?
