Newark's Forest of Overgrown Burials
Woodland Cemetery in Newark, New Jersey has a long history of neglect and vandalism. A large amount of the over 80,000 graves are overgrown and buried in a forest. A Forest of graves!

"...Not in the best of areas." Now THAT is a fucking understatement. You are risking your life.

You completely understand❤
I think that plot where you thought the body was dug up was actually a situation where the coffin collapsed. Not many people (if any) used outer boxes for burial back in the 1800's. I used to work in a cemetery and I had seen many of those where we had to put more dirt on it to even the ground out. Interesting video !

They didn't start using concrete liners until the mid 1980s in the cemeteries I dug graves for
I used to buy my dope around the block from this place (8 years clean now), great video! I always wondered about this place while driving by.

Entrance building is beautiful. Totally shameful that people's final resting place was left go without maintenance. Much respect to the people who take time out and make it better

I mean where is 7 or 8 billion people supposed to be buried, I say let it stay over grown. I care more about preserving our planet for future generation rather selfishly laying in the ground for thousands of years.
I can't get over how disrespectful some people are. Total lowlifes desecrating graves!

You really expect anything more from the African American community? Lol
Thank you to the people to take their time. Did donate their time to keep something like that so beautiful, graveyards lonely he deserved to have some kind of help. Thank you for taking the time to visit.

What a sad testament to humanity that anyone would leave a cemetery like that😢 RIP to all buried there.
I love your graveyard videos man. You and Lamont need more together!
God bless the volunteers who have made attempts to vlear this hallowed ground. This was another great video Thanks, Chris
Being cremated is looking better and better every time I see an abandoned cemetery or an unkept one. Just so sad 😞

It's absolutely amazing how people just don't care about anything in life. This is sad. Salute to the people who have taken time to start cleaning this up. Thank you for sharing.
You absolutely are taking a huge risk walking around that area. My in-laws have several family members buried in Newark, but we stopped going because of crime.

The kind of cemetery where you are likely to discover a fresh body while searching for a grave.
I "discovered" this cemetery while walking to my bus stop in Newark from the VA hospital in E. Orange in January, 2024. I ride my bike thru it weekly. Nice to see progress, but the amount of vandalism is heartbreaking. Some broken stones are laying on the sidewalk outside the fence. Always recent evidence of homeless encampments and intravenous drug use.
Anyone who vandalises graves is the lowest of the low.
So sad that the church has been left to fall apart. It was once a beautiful building. Very sad that this has happened to this cemetery. Awesome job to those that have volunteered their time to clean it up.
Well if you think about it,this whole earth is one big cemetery,.
That one you spotted that looked dug up could possibly be just sunk in. Older graves where the casket is most likely made of wood will collapse in on themselves when the lid rots through.
Just goes to show you that no matter who you are it doesn't take long for you to be forgotten

Awesome video Chris. I've been through New Jersey when I was a truck driver but there's no way I would live there.
BLESS YOU blessyoublessyou for visiting the Old German Cemetery as it's also been known! I live in NJ not far from Newark, and have wanted to get a glimpse and, if a program would launch, participate in rescuing it!❤❤❤
Detroit,Oakland,Baltimore,Newark etc, seeing a pattern here. Smh
Just like we’ll all eventually be: Completely forgotten.
Hi Chris, it’s a shame they let that cemetery fall into such disrepair. I’m Mike from East Meadow, New York. I missed some of your recent post because KZread lost all my subscriptions and it took me forever to get them back but I’m back enjoying you again thanks Chris for all you do..🇺🇸👮🏻♂️
Interesting video, Chris! Love old cemeteries!
The serene beauty of this decaying monument to mankind's traditions is breathtaking.

Yeah the white mans traditions. The blk and Latino residents of Newark didn’t build this.
This reminds me of Mount Moriah in Philly. Volunteers have worked really hard to clear it little by little. This cemetery has some beautiful grave markers, hopefully the underbrush will eventually be cleared. So sad!
Is the Iron bound section still there- my parents loved eating Portuguese food out there….Jersey Girl for life 💚 thanks for sharing!

Say my name out loud as you pass my grave. For that moment, I exist again.
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING, THANKS CHRIS!
That’s disturbing, to think that 200 years ago they thought having a huge gravestone was a good idea to preserve their legacy and then it made their resting place a target for criminals like some kind of twisted archeologists. :/ better to be cremated and scattered. Oh god the section where you think there’s an animal 😳 hopefully it was only that. Be careful out there, drugs make people do weird things... you never know. It’s legitimately dangerous. One of my sister’s ex hubby’s brothers is in prison bc he sh*t a guy in the woods thinking the guy was a ghost, and the dude was just a volunteer fireman good kid, out exploring. Those places attract nefarious people looking for a place to get high.
Shows you how nature will reclaim the world after mankind has destroyed himself.
Very interesting for sure. Nature always reclaims what belongs to it
If I had the time and money I would Def volunteer to clean cemeteries, keep up the great work Chris
Scary even in the daytime..
What a great tour. It's such a shame how its got. 😢 Thank you for sharing. 👏
Hello! It is amazingly overgrown. It's a great thing to have caring people work at clearing up the old sections.
Valley St Cemetery in Manchester NH is the same exact way. A garden cemetery that’s overgrown in a terrible neighborhood now.
I so hate that this cemetery is abandoned and how did it end up this way? This happens so often even in small town America. I'm sure as you said it all came down to money! Some of the most beautiful monuments I've ever seen anywhere! It all boils down to no respect by the people that have the decision-making power. Just pure disrespect on so many levels! Thank you for doing this video.
I'm a huge proponent of cremation, but this level of disrespect and vandalism pisses me off
I might be weird, but I think the cemetery looks good with all of the woods and plant life. I'm not a big fan of manicured cemeteries and this is nature reclaiming her own. I don't agree with the vandalism, though, they are the real weirdos. Thank you for the video.
This place is awesome and I love the architecture
Dang, stay strapped!
I don’t always get notifications from your channel 😢
Thank you. You are right we the living need to respect others resting place
Wow thank you for sharing!
Chris, this is the first vid I've seen from you in a while. I notice that someone else mentioned that they got three in a row! YT is a little wonky. Nice video! It's a shame when these old cemetery's have this happen. 👍
How people care for their elderly and deceased shows was their regard for all or complete lack thereof!
Wow, that place is massive and a jungle. Thanks for taking us on the walk. 💜☮️
Looks like that would of been a beautiful church. Some of those monuments were very nice. Hope you didnt get itchy seemed to be quite a lot of poison ivy around. Thanks for the video
Thank you for bringing light to the condition of this cemetery!love your channel!
Thank you another great video.
You’re doing a Great Job on your videos. Thank you for the coverage of this cemetery. Hope you are well. 🌺
I never need a notification or anything cuz I'm always just sitting back. Waiting for your next video. I took a look at this cemetery on Google Earth. Wow that's a pretty big cemetery in the middle of a city.
good video
Great video! Congratulations! You are the Best!!!!
I worked in Newark for many years and there is a cemetery that the highway cuts right through.
I am part of a local historical society and we use community service people to help us with work we need to be done. It is my feeling that people who have “broken down” the community could pay back by servicing this cemetery. I am also worried about you walking about in this cemetery even if it is day time. The constant sirens in the background are a concern. I am from the northeast and a big threat (although they are very small in size) are ticks. Please take this seriously as they carry a very insidious disease called Lyme disease. I should know. I suffer from it. I am worried about you.
I remember seeing this place in Weird NJ years ago. I thought it looked bad then. Yikes
Hi, Lamont said something in his live stream about he’d like to do a video with you about Cairo , IL , I think that would be amazing, I hope you guys get to do it someday soon, thanks

Thank you for this really good story.
Thanks Chris, another interesting video about an abandoned cemetery. I could sense you were nervous there and there were lots of police sirens in the background and I'd be wary about going in there alone. It's a pity Jay wasn't with you, you both could have toured the cemetery together. The gate house looked a bit like Highgate Cemetery, a bit like that time you toured Highgate in London. 🤗⚰️🇬🇧
I love your posts thanks so much
Don't worry about being in a good or bad area, once people see you filming with a camera and talking to yourself you'll be ok😊.👍
Another great story & video . Keep a sharp eye out and be safe out there Bro , we don't want anything happening to you sir ... See ya in the next one !
It’s a shame that it got this bad
Interesting video. Thanks!
staten island has one of these abandoned cemeteries also. Graves go way back, many can't even read.
Very cool, I'm not far from Newark and need to one day check out this Victorian era cemetery. Have you heard of the Provost-Bowne cemetery? 17th century graves in Old Bridge, NJ
Great video🏴🇬🇧👍
This one is a favorite!
Thankyou for such an interesting but sad video. 😊
Wow that's a old cemetery
Looks like a great Eagle Scout project, like ongoing generational Eagle Scout project!! and no I did not get any notification and I'm subscribed to get them.
Good video I like cemetery videos.
Thank you, Chris, for this really interesting video. It is a tragedy that cemeteries like this are left to be reclaimed by nature (and be vandalized). I suppose it's a tale that goes back in history - sad nonetheless. These "Garden Cemeteries were very popular in the 19th century and those that are maintained still make wonderful spots to take a walk through time.
Great video ! I grew up one town in Elizabeth
Nature reclaims all at some point. Reminds me of some European grave yards that become overgrown.
That’s deplorable!!
Thank you for sharing this. It is sad though. 🛐
One of the local cemeteries in my neighborhood had a sign stating that grass cutting fees were going to be 60k for the summer, that is unsustainable just going on plot sales and church donations
If they are selling plots again, I can't imagine many people would be interested in buying knowing there's a good possibility of it being neglected.
@MobileInstinct

Good point. Hopefully they stay on top of what has been cleared
Damn. Sounds just like Leakin Park in west Baltimore City, MD! Except Leakin Park isn't a cemetery though.
This kind of forested cemetery looks like those featured in Georgia by Sidestep. Newark is a poluted city but what a shame for this cemetery to be like this. Hope the volunteers head count gets doubled, tripled and they can clear it up but with all those trees lots of cutting needs to be done.
There is another cemetery in Jersey City that is being slowly restored. Some of it is still in the woods.
Every other scene there's a siren of sorts. Glad you were able to get out and capture this.
The indentured you see are most likely from coffins sinking...it happens to most of them depending on the ground type...it is a shame it's been let go like this...but anyone with relatives here should try to help keep their areas cleaned up at this point...
Thanks for an interesting, if disturbing tour. I am glad that there are volunteers who care enough to restore the cemetery. I think the cemetery's board of directors sound inept and need to be replaced.
Great video. Reminded me of a slightly sadder and more sparse Highgate
Dude great vids but ur crazy being in Newark
All of newark is falling apart.
Wow looks creepy, great video 😊
That cemetery is not "slowly being maintained" it's being ignored and neglected! They need to bring in chainsaws rakes, string trimmers and lawnmowers. I could literally have that entire cemetery cleaned up in 2 weeks flat. That's a 10 hour day too with a lunch and snack break.
@SlingBlade933
Ай бұрын
So you think you can cut down a whole forest and rake up all those leaves etc in 2 weeks? I mean its a good idea but whos going to pay you or are you doing it for free? I would be interested in helping with that
Oh wow sad cemetery. Tha gate house in particular has such beautiful architecture and then it's been just scribbled over with so much graffiti.
11:10 Chris presents us with an odd visual riddle- you could reverse the footage and the narrative still applies.
Shame the community doesn't want to take part in cleaning. This clearly shows the sign of what the city life cares about it's people. Thanks for sharing good sir. And for the people who runs Newark New Jersey to go screw yourselves for not doing your jobs.
