Newark Ohio Fire Department Barn Fire on Licking Springs Road. Command View with Radio Traffic.

On December 17, 2020 at 0749 hours NFD units were dispatched to 7733 Licking Springs Road for a report of a barn fire. While responding the dispatcher advised they had received a call from an off-duty firefighter reporting flames visible and they are upgrading the run to a working fire.
Skip to 8:15 to get to the fire action.
This house was located on the far northeast side of the city and the driveway was over 1800 feet long. .
The following equipment was on the initial assignment:
Battalion-1 with a crew of 1 (Me)
Rescue-1 (engine/rescue) with a crew of 3
Tower-1 (105 Ft. platform) with a crew of 2
Engine-2 with a crew of 3
Engine-5 with a crew of 3
Medic-5 with a crew of 3
The working fire announcement brought the following additional equipment
Ladder-3 with a crew of 3
Engine-541 with a crew of 3
Tanker-391 with a crew of 2
3 additional tankers were requested but cancelled prior to arrival.
Upon arrival a barn that was approximately 30x60 was fully involved. One 2.5” line and one 1.75” line was utilized to knock-down the bulk of the fire and protect exposures. Several cats perished in the fire.
There were no civilian or firefighter injuries at this fire.

In Britain, we have "listed buildings." If an old building is recognised as being valuable because of its age, architecture or rarity value, it will sometimes be listed. This can give it some protection from demolition, and if it's very lucky, dereliction. Different listing registers for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. I don't know if in the US have a listed buildings scheme, or anything similar. It sounds as if the remaining old wooden barns should be listed.

I live in rural Wisconsin and I see these kinds of barns all over the place, possibly because we have Amish here that still build the barns basically the same way as 100 years ago, we also have a lot of barns and farmhouses that have fallen in after being abandoned.

@@crazyleyland5106 I can not talk for all states in the USA, but New York state we have Registry of historic buildings. If a building is on the list you must get approval for anything you do including painting. Most time the paint must match original colors. I worked clearing an old marina on the Hudson river that was built on an 1800's iron ore loading dock. A cement footing from an overhead tram that brought the ore to the river from the mountains is in the middle of the park we were building and could not be removed, altered or covered.

Great job. There is only so much you can do in winter conditions and a fully engulfed wooden structure. There was a large barn fire a few months ago near my house and 15 departments responded. It took over 4 hours to put out and because it was on a backroad, all local tankers were called to the scene. Water had to be pumped from a nearby reservoir because the fire was stubborn. What was left of the barn ended up reigniting 2 days later and a few departments were called back. Luckily, no one was killed or injured. Thank you firefighters and first responders for all that you do👍.

Knowing what manpower and equipment you needed and quickly clearing everyone else. A lot of other IC’s would have not made that decision so quick and would have loaded that entire driveway with a three ring circus. That driveway would have been a nightmare if you ended up needing to shuttle multiple loads of water. Love the videos. Merry Christmas Chief.

Definitely a good call not tying up too many resources. The barn was lost. Protect exposers and keep other resources in service and able to respond to other calls. There are too many times when resources are wasted (water, equipment and manpower) for already lost buildings.

It was a loss before you arrived Chief. 200 year old wood is just tinder in a hot burn. No sense in risking assets on a ice/snow covered driveway. Good call, but you can't win them all....

this is almost the worst example of driving an emergency vehicle I've ever seen, blew......this dude should have his license 5 red lights, overtaking a school bus in a school zone barely slowing down. he should have his license revoked for 10 years !!!

@@douggriffin2910 cleared the intersections properly, very few places actually require full stops before proceeding, the passing was justified given oncoming traffic had already yielded, the bus couldn’t care less, and there were no school children present. This man is one of the most procedural, responsible, and reliable Bat’s i have seen.

Thats interesting you call that a long drive. In rural Kansas we are happy to have something 8 minutes away, seems like a lot of times its a 10 or 15 minute drive. But then again we have WAY less population. Don't take me wrong I'm not knocking you for calling that a long drive, just find it very interesting comparing the different locals.

you guys are by far one of the best departments out there. far too often do i see videos and think "how did they earn that leadership position?" but with you it is clear how YOU did it, via excellence and a passion for the craft. please become a full time instructor at the end of your career rather than just retiring, PLEASE, SOO many departments need to take note from you i have seent sum thangs on these interwebs that scare me... the amount of inept departments gives me daymares lmao.

A couple of questions, Chief, if I may. Is that in the town/city limits of Newark, or is that your first due as an extraterritorial jurisdiction, or just because no one else is closer? (Edit: never mind, I see your answer to this on another comment thread). Does Newark FD run any tankers, or do you rely exclusively on mutual aid from area departments when tankers are needed? How far away did the nearest hydrant turn out to be?
