When I’m in NYC I don’t think about my gear being stolen. As Roman suggests, having your gear stolen can happen anywhere. The thing to keep in mind is there is safety in numbers. If there are pedestrians around you, you are relatively safe. I am more concerned about traffic when crossing the street than having my gear stolen. Watch out for bicyclists. They are viscous. Truly.
