Night footage from New Year's Eve 2023 at the historic union station in Selma, NC, located on the CSX A-line and Norfolk Southern NC-line.
The NC-line (former Southern Railway) crosses the A-line (former Atlantic Coast Line) at grade by the Selma-Smithfield Amtrak Station. Norfolk Southern's NC-line is the NCDOT corridor between Greensboro and Morehead City via Raleigh and New Bern.
On this cold New Year's Eve night, several railfans were present for the Selma Railfan Group's unofficial New Year's Eve slideshow, presenting year in review highlights. Rail action was busy on the A-line with heavy traffic between the Northeast and Florida, including some additional Amtrak trains.
Because of signal issues on Amtrak's Northeast Corridor, the southbound Palmetto and Carolinian (Amtrak 89 and 79) were running over five hours late. This required station agent Tommy Price to keep the station open well after normal business hours, providing a rare opportunity to hang out inside on this cold night.
