You gotta figure out that damn sound till the RC is quiet and smooth… we will all be watching and learning while you end up with one bad ass Xmaxx! Just an idea🇺🇸

Hey Earl, I have this problem also. I found it 2 years ago on a brand new xmaxx at the time. I also shimmed both bearings. It is not the most beautifull solution, but it works. I changed the bulkhead once because it cracked, but the problem is still there unfortunatly. Thanks for the video,

Yea looked it up on their site that it does come with the 2085X which is nice to see. It’s under the “Features List” then “•Steering” it shows it has the 2085X. Good job by Traxxas there! My 2085X popped out after say 50 runs of mild to light bashing which was disappointing. I finally upgraded it to a better high quality “standard servo” and so far so good. Thanks Earl for this in debt look.

Hi Earl, my X max is 3 years old made the same noise. I used foil under half of the bearings on both To keep shaft straight.

Well it does seem to be quieter for sure. But i suppose you'll not really know till you run it. Great info vid Earl thanks. What a well built RC some amount of screws in that front end.

sweet not too much with the diff's then because i wonder if been over greasing things on mine since it can be messy but you mostly did the same things an like you said it dose feel better just hope the run shows it when we have tinkered with the shims 👍

Hi Earl, hopefully you will see this. I have the same problem on an XMaxx I just built. After seeing your video on this I started digging a little futher. It's the 20t gear. I took calipers and checked across the teeth. Measurement was larger towards the rear of the gear. This would explain why shimming the rear of the rear of the cover helped. I'm going to get a couple of replacements and see if that works. I've contemplated filing that area of the teeth, don't know if will induce wear. If you get an opportunity check it out.

I’ve had this same problem with my first Xmaxx few years ago and what I did was shim it up with fine layers of thin foil on rear bearing on Cush drive to soften up mesh on center diff… worked great ultra quite … and on second Xmaxx didn’t have this issue… I believe it’s luck of the draw on plastic molded parts … but should be caught on quality control 😳😳😳

Ok, i still dont own an xmaxx, but as far as i know from watching all those upgrade videos- the oem pinions were not held in place. If you pull out the diff, you can also pull out the pinion without undoing other parts. Its just held in place through the bearing and diff- ring gear.

Great work Earl, I'm picking up an Xmaxx Ultimate tomorrow I'm curious if it will have the same issue!!! 🤔 We will find out!!!

I use the same grease for my XMaxx. Gears and bearings.

Had the same noise on my 3S Typhon , it ended up being the rear diff . What a frustrating hobby sometimes

Change the rear gear cover, mine did the same. New cover problem fixed…deformed some how

I found the same problem few months ago, all I could figure out to do was to back off those screws of the cover a little till it got quieter. It think it’s only a temporary fix unfortunately…

Yes I took the cardboard part number to the servo cut strips and put them under the two bearings to shim it up 🤷🏻‍♂️

Earl, have you thought about just pulling parts from your other xmaxx & switch things around to see if that makes a difference? If an area is too tight, rubbing/getting hot etc, if you just run it, it will eventually show itself. Lol! Good Luck!

Heya, some KZreadrs says that they found that the new chassis of the xmaxx is weaker then the older version and breaks easier. This is from xmaxx fans like Kevin on his KZread site. Have you found that it's true? Even the new parts that's plastic seems weaker. What's your take on it?

@Frikkietube I haven’t noticed that the upper bellcrank cover has had this issue since they where built seems now it break quicker but who’s to say we are not landing worse 🤷🏻‍♂️

I has same issue. I changed the gear cover for the Cush shaft sound gone.

My XRT has the same problem. I’ve replaced the center diff and idler gear along with the shaft for the cush drive with no change. Maybe the center diff housing is out of spec. Frustrating as my brain says. If I could just get rid of that rough spot!

I guess you’ll have a better idea what’s causing the noise in a long term test. Let’s see what breaks or wears out to maybe give us a better idea what’s causing it.

@@earlmoorhead5555 I bought a 30t pinion gear from arrma through Horizon and it was machine incorrectly, it had a wobble so they replaced it and it had a wobble they replaced it again it had a wobble finally they just gave me a big can motor with 8 mm shaft and a 30t pinion for that. That finally took care of the wobble, but doesn't change the fact that three 30t pinions sent to me all had the same issue and they all came from China. I sent them two videos showing that the shaft spun true, and I changed pinion gears all in the same stream of video to show that my other pinions spun true on it, but the 30t pinions they sent me are in fact machine incorrectly and they didn't solve the problem and they're still selling them. So I don't buy pinions from horizon or arrma anymore. Sorry for the rant.

I think the noise is just reverberating through the metal hollow drive shaft

You think that until you own one. It looks way more intimidating that it actually is. I have a Krayton, a mojave, and an xmaxx. Xmaxx repairs are definitely more tedious but you do them wayyy less 😂

Two days into finding this issue three if you count greasing all the diffs 🤷🏻‍♂️

I got too driving rcs til they break then fixing whatever broke. Lot simpler than all this faffing.

The are never really smooth or quiet….so long as no binding. Just how the tolerances are on mass production

The pinion gear was incorrectly machine coming from China of course. I bet if you spin it it does not spin true.

Not sure how traxxas works, it clearly states and they totally reminded me that if you ran a battery thru it it voids the warranty and trust me they played me that way! So not sure how this is happening

Traxxas has no warranty on the rc but if you can prove it’s a defect like I can from all the videos they might help

It’s beating a dead horse for me, like I say I appreciate the vids, I appreciate you!! I can’t justify the price for smiles!
