  • @drxym

Every car has lane keeping assist. Some manufacturers just implement it better than others. My MG has annoying LKA but I've driven Volkswagens & Peugeots where it is less annoying. I certainly wouldn't want to turn it off. As for head up display I test drove a BYD Seal with it and I actually found it kind of annoying since it was a light source basically in my eyeline the whole time. If there is a HUD it needs a brightness setting.

Had a test drive in one of these yesterday (very nice, not the AWD silly fast one though unfortunately) and the idea with the central thing is you can ask google to do any of the things you want, we trie dit out and maybe 85% of the times we asked it got it right (like heating the seats, or turning on the blower for the windscreen). I was expecting to find the central console thing really annoying (first time driving something like this and not a regular car), but it wasn't an issue at all.

The comparison to a Ferrari 360 is exactly what Jeremy Clarkson would say. The only thing missing was a lap around the track by a certain tame racing driver.

Not sure if I agree with the LFP vs NMC as MDF vs Oak comparison. The LFP has the way longer longevity, it can take way more charging cycles and has a reduced impact on the environment, while it's more suitable to be charged to 100% and has a flatter charge curve (although yes, the peak is lower.) to me, the LFP is the superior battery technology, where i'm going to forgive it's reduced energy density compared to NMC which results in the slightly lower effiency of the car.

They're also safer, which is a huge plus. Damage or defects won't cause them to go into thermal runaway, avoiding intense self-fueling fires (which are rare with other chemistries, but dangerous when they occur). I think they're perfect for mass-market, non-performance EVs that are charged at home most of the time. Only avoid it if you're a frequent road-tripper or do all of your charging at DC fast chargers.

Having a V90 with Google Automotive i can tell you that it does a lot more than just the heating. From activating the reduced guard to turning on the heated seats via lowering the windows or opening the boot. basically most functions that do not require a physical switch being moved from one position to another. I think this is the aim of Volvo here. Speak to your car if you need something and if you are going to use a system you can speak to why not use the best in the business. GOOGLE

The point is to use voice commands, which is safer than buttons and dials. The question is how much are those buttons and dials worth to the buyer and Tesla has-fortunately or unfortunately-showed that buyers ultimately decide based on a price/performance proposition and thus we are moving toward the car as a convenience appliance rather than an involved piece of machinery with “soul”.

Voice controls can be safer, if they correctly recognize and respond. When they don’t, they make driving more dangerous. My wife says she’s never witnessed me driving as dangerously as when I struggle with the voice recognition system in my Subaru. So I’ve long given up on trying to use it. The capacitive controls also are dangerously distracting as I have to look to use them and I sometimes activate one unintentionally when moving my fingers past it (it’s usually the audio source control - I’ve learned to simply ignore it until I feel I have time to safely switch it back).

I’m interested to know, if you have any specific examples on how you feel the voice command feature (not working properly), makes it dangerous, is it just the fact that it kinda forces you to revert back to the manual controls? I’n my experience with manual controls, I think muscle memory and a bit of photographic memory allows me to get to certain controls with having to look for them, and like you, I’ve learned to just wait also for the safest opportunity to do so.

I also hate that the starting MSRP is low but things like the additional 360 camera, parking assist are available on the much higher trims. Car manufacturers really need to stop on the "trims" and just offer one car for one price. These reviews are very misleading as manufacturers will always give reviewers the more top of the line trim

I know, I know, some people say you will get used to it, but it just triggers me in terms of ergonomics and practicality, plus being a huge safety issue. ive considered this and thought about it while driving for the last couple of months and you rarely have to use any controls except the volume for the radio and the wipers when you are moving. The aircon i leave at 20.5 most of the time, the lights and wipers are on auto with the only adjustment being the "heavy / light" rain twist on the stalk. Lights are on auto, fullbeam is auto, mirrors are adjusted before I drive off (and once in the correct position i dont adjust them (i dont need to!)). Re the speedo position, it is actually easier to look slightly sideways and refocus than it is to change focus up and down (there are good evolutionary reasons for that!) I think most of the objections are just because it isnt the same as it has always been.

I would absolutely go for the single engine version of the ex30 since there is not ever anywhere i drive i will need all that horsepower. 272 from the 2 wheel drive is absolutely enough.
