    Hello Aaron, Wow, you got a really nice classic turntable there my friend. Finding a Thorens in any condition both workable or not is worth investing in. Good luck with it. I wish you many years of smooth grooving~ Rob/Boston

    These little cartridges at the end of your tonearm are little machines. They are built with extreme care, yet they all have definite differing qualities. The goal for them is to extract the truth from those grooves. I'm fond of the different ways they achieve that. It's magic. Thomas Edison. The great engineer. :)

    You were really lucky to find that hinge on eBay. I have just rigged my TD 145 Mk11 after many years in the garage and both the hinges have been broken in various house moves over the years and I can't find spares anywhere. Amazingly though, it worked straight out of the box after I hooked it up with a little pre-amplifier to boost the signal to the level needed for the aux socket in my Pioneer music centre. I'm now happily paying music I haven't hear for 40 years or more! There is no doubt the putting an album on a turntable is so much more of an event than playing something in iTunes ! You're right - it's a lovely deck. I've had it since new, so it's a slice of my life.

    +Rob Armitage The hinge was super expensive on eBay. I can't remember what I paid for it at this point.

    Hey man, I think I have a tip for you: there are files online for 3d printing the hinges. If you can find a 3d printshop close by, you can send them the files and ask them to print the hinges for you. For me, this cost next to nothing. Cheers! Edit: make sure you use the original hinge files. There are other ‘improved’ ones but when I had them printed, they did not close too well.

    You know one thing I've noticed with the AT cart so far is the reverb "tails" on vocals. I can actually hear the reverb decay over time, which is something I've never noticed with the Grado before.

    That, Sir is a handsome looking deck, you've got yourself a real bargain :-) I've just acquired a TD150 mk 2 and I have been cleaning and adjusting it and oiling the bearing. There's more to do, but it's playing pretty well already. Enjoy your Thorens, they're lovely turntables.

    My guess is that it will get warmer once broke in (they claim 100 hours!). I didn't get that far on mine yet, but I've read the high praises so it will go on one of my Duals when I get them rebuilt. The AT 120e has some good punch too. Which I like. Bass was very clear. This is the fun and challenging, yet possibly costly task of getting the cart that makes you melt and have no regrets whatsoever. There's a science to it, but it is really your own musical ear that accepts it in the long run.

  • @stringchild1
    @stringchild112 жыл бұрын

    Oh. I didn't realize those had that auto-lift. You're right. They are essentially the same thing. The tonearm is different. I don't have much trouble aligning my TP 16. I'm sure they are sonically the same. I had the 120e on mine too. It has a long break in. It's got some great output and detail. A bit bright. It's fucked up, but the 95e on it is hard to fault. That little cart impresses me more and more. I have my AT150 MLX on it again. My 120e is back in the box. It's turn will come back. PT1

    I have the TP16 MKII tonearm which is a lot lighter than the TP16 MKI. I'm spinning it now with the AT. The clarity is nice. Maybe I'm not used to that detail, LOL. The Grado's are great, but too warm for some.

    Hi Aaron. Great choice on that table. Look at the money you saved vs. the Pro-Ject. Plus the fact that the Thorens will accept practically any variety of cartridge. I have a TD 160. Does your TD 145 have the spring suspension? I forgot. That looks mint. Sweet! Nice to see your pleasure of having it. Congrats. Cheers.

    Which model sansui is your amp?

  • @stringchild1
    @stringchild112 жыл бұрын

    PT 2 It's been cool for me experimenting and listening to the special qualities of the different carts I've tried. So don't bum on it. That 120e is a good cart. Channel separation and detail are AT's edge over the competition. This is the thing... The ear, ie: your ear therein lies a perfect marriage between a certain cart and that tonearm. Did you keep your old turntable? Have two or three and extra carts. It's OK. I said so (lol!). I'm still on it. 95e for $50 is still the best deal so far.

  • @buddybopper
    @buddybopper11 жыл бұрын

    I would go for something vintage. Marrantz or Sansui. There are so many to choose from.

  • @buddybopper
    @buddybopper12 жыл бұрын

    Yeah it has a suspended chassis. The TD 145 MKII is essentially a TD 160 with an auto-stop/auto-lift (at the end of a record) feature. It's fookin' sweet. I just put a Audio Technica at120e on it and it sings. Kinda missing the warm Grado sound though. Picking the right cart is such a drag! I kinda wanna put a Grado Silver1 on it to see how it sounds, but that tp62 head shell is a bitch to align.

    I highly recommend a new Grado stylus or maybe a new cartridge. The Prestige series is reasonably priced, and probably out perform any of the their old cartridges.

    I've never tried a Grado, but I've liked all examples I've ever heard of their carts. Warmth of sound is one of the main attractions of analog vinyl recordings ever since this vinyl resurgence has taken place. What it is to me? Can I just get as close as I can to the sound of the master tape? I'm really not that picky, but vinyl does do it pretty damn good. These variable aspects of it make it..... well.... It's vinyl! I don't know how to explain it. I just love records. Sorry to chatter on.

    I had 2...they are great and nice looking, but at the time they came out it was a butget turntable....don´t make the mistake, radio stations use direct drive turntables....I have been in many radio studios, but never ever they use belt drive turntables, they just start way to slow no matter what size of motor you put into them....

    I think it's funny when people buy thorens (or any other vintage), or even newer hi-fi tables. Get a great needle and a good table. I'd much rather have a Rega or Technics, or any other midrange table that's a more modern table.

    ***** Vintage high end is very reasonable and lasts forever. Get a great vintage high end table and a great cartridge/needle combo. Modern can't match high end vintage tables unless you spend upwards of $5,000.
