It's actually a "Thorens TD-165". You can also polish the cover with Meguiars Clear Plastic Polish which is available from Canadian Tire for about $11.99. I owned a TD-166 for many years and one important piece of maintenance is to remove the mat and platter and then grab a hold of the main spindle platter and yank it out of the main bearing. Pull nice and firm as the oil is holding it in. Get a Q-tip and some alcohol and clean out the main bearing of all the old oil/grease which I'm sure has turned to molasses by now. Put some fresh oil into the bearing pit and on the spindle and re-insert it into the hole. It will not want to go in, so give it a spin by hand it it will slowly drop into the bearing and the excess oil will be force out. You should not hear any noise as it spins. If you hear any scraping, put a little more oil in and try again. As for the motor, put a couple drops of oil on the shaft and let it wick down into the motor. Or, the motor could have bad rubber suspension.

I've sold many of these in the past. You should not hear ANY motor noise at all. In fact I would put it up to any direct drive unit, any time. I think the issue could be the belt being too stiff. The original was very soft and flexible. I also noticed the motor shaft looked slightly bent. The motor does have that Feel to it you noticed, it is a synchronous type. It will only run at synchronous speed, then stall. Don't right this table off, it will give very good results.

Yeah these should be completely silent. I have a Linn LP12, a fundamentally similar deck in terms of design, and there is no discernable rumble either mechanically or on the pickup. Indeed these very high end belt-drive decks should be quieter than the direct drive units (good though they are).

I agree it has to be the belt. I purchased this from the local vintage audio shop an told him what it was going on. The rumble is not loud and is not that noticeable until the volume is turned up quite loud. I will have to see if I can find another. My 16 year old was all excited when he saw this table and as soon as I said I was planning on selling it there was a puddle on the floor so I don't think this table is heading anywhere but up a flight of stairs.

The rumble is from the belt. It was quite cold in the shop. I had left the unit sitting in the garage an the temp is about 10c and that made the belt stuff. After I brought it in and the unit warmed up the noise went away. I will be doing another one on this table for lubrication procedures. This one was just the check up and tone arm balance.

Yes that would do it. I have the same table, and had it stored in a locker during a move for a period of time. When I hauled it out it sounded just like that. The oil in the bearings also gets sludgy at low temperature. Once mine warmed up it was fine. Probably wouldn't hurt to pul the spindle and lube it up if it has been sitting for a long time.

Very interesting video. Thornes is considered to be a high quality turntable. Could the motor need lubrication, or could the rubber motor mounts need replacement? I would think there's got to be some kind of forum just for Thornes turntables somewhere on the internet that would know about things like this. Regards, Tom

@@12voltvids My experience with this is that some replacement belts are wider than others, and possibly less taut, and they end up rubbing on one side or the other of the 33/45 alignment mechanism. You can test for this by simply pushing down a little- or pulling up a little- on that mechanism while the drum is turning, and you might notice the "rumble" disappearing. There may be a way to slightly adjust the motor spindle angle (there are 3 painted screws..?) so that the belt rides a bit higher or lower on the plastic pulley.

I prefer my Technics SLM1 myself as well, as I use it as a recording table to record onto the computer, and the ability to cue up with 1/2 rev to full speed is great as it makes for tight cuts. I hit the start button, and I have sound in just over 1 second. Yes I know back cueing is murder on the record and needle, but I am just doing that to record them once, and then they are put away for good. I am not a big vinyl user. I have my old collection of a few hundred records, and then I went CD.

I would take the belt off and just put the needle on the record, just see how much is direct through the motor mounts. That motor should be really good, perhaps its bearings need some love and its rubber mounts have gone hard. Shame about the platter smack marks on the fasia, possible fine polish job?

The motor pulley is a touch too low and the belt is rubbing on the changer. There is evidence of rubber being shed from the belt if you look. The belt will try and run on the center of pulley as it is not a flat surface but curves the belt - so pulley height is only way to adjust belt height. I guess maybe it got a whack from above when being chucked out. Some are friction fit on motor shaft, some have a grub screw , just needs lifting a couple mm. The Thorens belt is a precision part ground flat on one surface, I don't think your belt is any where near the quality of original Swiss one, though that would not make it run with noise.

A neighbor of mine was throwing out a TD124 and a Tanberg Reel to Reel. He told me his dad passed away. This was 12 years ago. He said no one plays records anymore and he said I could have the turntable which was in mint condition and also contained a cartridge. I told him to at least keep the Tanberg which he did. The Thorens needed a small capacitor and a good cleaning and oiling with clock oil. It came with a spare belt and now works like new. The speed control uses a permanent magnet to induce eddy currents in a metal wheel which works extremely well. The build quality on that Thorens is amazing. Best find I ever came across.

Yes I am fully aware of that. Local stereo shop sold me this one. I have since sourced the correct belt for it. Local shop that sold me this one out of business now. Wonder why?

Aftermarket belts tend to be resonant on Thorens belt driven turntales of that era causing resonant low frequency hum once it is picked up by the cartridge. I own a TD 165 myself. Thorens still has belts available for them and are made by Thekken under the Thorens brand. I am currently using a new Thekken belt on mine and since then it has since ran quieter. They can be found at Amazon.

Yes I found that out I actually got a proper thorns belt from one of the local vintage HiFi shops it was not cheap but it sounds a lot better than the aftermarket belt that I first put on it that I bought from the regular stereo shop that I used to deal with.

@@12voltvids They may not be cheap but they are well worth the extra $$. I immediately noticed the difference when I replaced the aftermarket on my TD165 with a genuine Thorens belt. Nice and quiet and a much better sound. I am using a Empire 2000 E/iii cartridge on mine. When you own a Thorens you are walking on sacred ground. Treat them with respect. Enjoy it. :)

No wonder why your CD's sound better. That record is filthy! I'll bet they are all like that. Shine an LED light on it.

I picked that record up at a garage sale for .25. My record collection is relatively small. Perhaps 100 records. My CD collection on the other hand well over 1000. I have had CD since 84 so not much on vinyl since then. Many of my final copies I bought on CD and gave away the vinyl versions. The ones in my cabinet are all in fairly good shape, but I have not played these on videos. For unknown tables I use beater records.

12voltvids Shine an LED light on the ones that look clean to the eye. I can't believe the disgusting stuff I'm finding on brand new records. I have CD's too since about 1984 too. I'm using luxman D404 it's out lasted all previous pioneer and Sony players. I prefer 24 hdcd over 16 bit. There are a few that sound decent. Digital formats have been abused by record companies trying to make the loudest disc.
