Given that the triumph 400 won't see British shores till December, and that by then I'm sure enfield will have launched the new Himalayan 450 liquid cooled, so that will be a direct competition for the triumph 400 scrambler I'd say

Not just for older & shorter riders.I'm 48 & had a crash & stuffed my back & ankles & light bikes are for me now.I got a Trident 🔱 for it's low weight & push it around no problems my old Interceptor would of been abit to heavy for me.These new Triumph 400(T400) are great lightweight have enough power for motorways look great.I looked at the Tiger 🐅 660 206kg but it was the upswoopped seat I struggled to swing my leg over with my bad back, hip & Trident 🔱 189kg & I could swing leg over seat.

The new 400 seems on par with the KTM 390, but with decent modern classic looks. The 400X I'm most excited about as a weekday commuter, with actual ability for weekends off road. I'd love an XE variant with some even longer stroke suspension, higher ground clearance, and spoked wheels (please Triumph!)... even so the standard 400X should hit the sweet spot for many. The new RE 450 Himalayan could be stiff competition for it though, especially if it maintains RE's typically aggressive pricing.

Great review Motobob. I think the scram looks wise is up there and for the price. The trident seems a similar sizing and also comparable to the Benelli offerings in sizing for smaller bikes like the Benelli Leoncino 500 scrambler and 800 scrambler that are also lovely bikes. The only discernible factor for me buying these bikes is the dealership network in the United Kingdom and the people willing to work on them which puts the likes of triumph at the top but the prices are also fairly high in comparison to the models I mentioned. I forgot to mention another Italian bike the Cabalerro fabric scrambler 125 and 500 which are beautiful looking machines and FM moto And motoguzzi bigger 650 scramblers. I am not a fan of the 400 Harley rear end scambler fendering 😆

More claimed power than the Triumph's or any of the mentioned rivals + 270° P-twin layout should also produce the best exhaust note!

I bought a Scram as a training bike. I'm doing DAS training with students on MT07s. I have no problem keeping pace with these bikes out on the dual carriageway. You just hold onto the gears a bit longer. Off road it's agile, stable and easy to ride - it's certainly well beyond my level of competence. Where Enfield cuts the costs is in the peripherals, so you just have to accept that you will be upgrading things like chains, brake pads and so on. The tyres are just fine, despite being budget, so I'll wear them out before changing them. On the Triumphs, I agree with Stuart Fillingham here - the Enfields are not really the competition as they are very different machines with different characteristics and price range. Overall, I suspect that the Triumphs despite being pitched at the Asian market will do better in places like Europe.

Bajaj through triumph is trying to achieve exactly that it seems. They do have the dominar 400 which was slated as a rival to the RE classic bikes but haven't really been able entice RE would be owners. So triumph with the more pronounced brand name could sway a lot of buyers toward their side.

Today you might go nuts over Triumph motorcycles, but remember that it was RE who was a pioneer in this segment who understood the needs of people and gave them a decent affordable motorcycle ! ❤️❤️ RE!

With the inclusion of the Honda, what about a Benelli Leoncino Trail?

  • @_audacerider3838

Well I think You should also include the Gold Star 650cc and a Benelli Imprriale 400 as well as Benelli Leoncino 500 and Leoncino 500 trial. As well as Fantic Caballero 500 they are all hovering around 5,5K pounds mark. And I can't see the new Triumph 400 dipping below the 5K pounds mark.

Interesting comparisons video. Over time I still think either of the 2 R.E. bikes - HNTR 350, Scram 411, would work out better value from the Ownership point of view. Simple to 'DIY' Maintain, lower purchase_price, possibly lower insurance cost . It will be Interesting to see what happens. PS Of the 2 triumphs I prefer the looks of the scrambler. But still go for the Scram 411

Triump speed 400 is simply great, extraordinary performance at low and middle RPM's but rear brakes and liquid cooling system could have been better. Overall it is a great bike 🥰🥰👍👍👍

I have the Duke 390 21 model. It's fantastic specially now i put a 14 tooth front sprocket on it. It's fantastic but you need to be tall because it has a high seat height.

How would you compare these with the mid-cap. line up from Fantic? I'm surprised to see that the 2 Triumphs are priced at least £ 2000,- cheaper than the Fantics here in Denmark😲...

Expect to see plenty of people modifying the shit out of the Scrambler 400, and doing some fairly serious enduro riding with them. Can't wait to see all the crazy aftermarket parts that come to market for both the baby Triumphs.

The competition in this segment is increasing thick and fast. The new Duke makes a compelling case for itself. But at least there is still a proper distinction in intent compared to the Speed 400, so you would have an easier decision to make. I personally prefer the Triumph for it's low end and calmer power delivery that makes the power usable more of the time during regular commutes. I loved my Duke 200, but that sort of spirited riding (comparing the 390 here though) everyday is behind me. Especially with the poor road and traffic conditions here. However, when it comes to the Scrambler 400 X, there is serious competition incoming in the guise of the Himalayan 450 with a liquid cooled single, boasting the same power and torque figures as the Triumph. This should be interesting!
