I test drove a 2024 model 3 yesterday and it had v12.4 of FSD on it. The guy at the dealership said that the in-cabin camera has gotten so precise that you won't have to put your hands on the wheel at all. I let it drive me to my house (16 min drive) and I never had to tug on the wheel once and it was crazy how well it drove.

As much as I like the idea of FSD and not needing to touch the wheel, the attention nag is way more annoying. I actually got a disable because of the attention nag even though I was clearly paying attention. It kicked me off for the number of attention nags, not the duration, which is stupid on a long drive when I’m clearly looking at the speedometer they put in the middle of the car instead of in my line of sight like every other car. I’d rather deal with the nag and it not care about my eyes like autopilot does.

Tesla has significant Model Y inventory right now. They should target the middle to latter part of June to have price cuts on this inventory. The end of June is the end of the second quarter. They need to increase deliveries before the end of the first quarter. Bad second quarter will result in downward pressure on the stock. So, if anyone wants a good time to buy a Tesla Model Y, the latter part of June should be a good time to buy. If not, wait until the end of the third quarter, the latter part of September.

Now just waiting for deliver maybe June? App show July delivery. Looks like Tesla marketing shot them self in the foot with that one.

I wonder if we'll ever get to real fsd. I guess the optimistic case is that if they keep managing to rapidly drop the needed number of driver interventions per mile, then fsd eventually will arrive, perhaps sooner than we think, because of the apparently exponential decrease in the needed number of interventions. The pessimistic -- or perhaps just realistic -- case, is that FSD cannot be achieved, because driving in crowded cities is just too chaotic for AI to master. The goal of fsd, at least in unstandardized settings like cities, may be one of those goals that are always 5 years in the future, and never actually arrive in the present, because some goals are inherently impossible ones. I"m not saying fsd is impossible, I'm just presenting that perhaps pessimistic argument. It seems quite possible that AI cannot be made sufficiently reliable to master unstandardized, ever new situations presented by driving, especially in cities. But suppose "fsd" gets good enough to be licensed for robotaxis in NYC. Suppose they actually do less damage than human drivers, by far. What happens when a robotaxi does err and someone gets killed? Probably, if the overall stats show that robotaxis are safer than human drivers, robotaxis will continue to be permitted to operate, though there might of course be lawsuits due to any injuries or fatalities that can be attributed to fsd. But that need not stop robotaxis in general.

Event if it works a lot better than now, surely there will still be the rare occasion where manual invention is warranted - but if you don't have a steering wheel what then? Your comment on "FSD is needed before the Robotaxi can become reality" is spot on. Just finished a 2000 mile road trip in my 2023 Model Y with FSD turned on... found it works reasonably well in clear daylight but still a ways to go before it is as good a driver as an awake, experienced human driver, especially in rainy weather. Numerous "interventions" needed for tight situations or even routine passing situations. Still, much better than traditional cruise control + lane keeping.

The warning system while using auto pilot is way too quick to warn. I sometimes use autopilot to try and safely use the touch screen for selecting a phone contact or setting etc. The warning now makes using auto pilot pointless for this which only makes the drive more hazardous as I stick to manual mode and have the hold the wheel while trying to use the busy touch screen. Secondly If I can’t use sunglasses while using auto pilot then I won’t use auto pilot. What a waste of a great feature because of heavy handed monitoring.

I also REALLY want them to change the wheel configuration menu to allow for more custom sizes. If it’s a size they don’t have a range estimation for then it could default back to a standard size until they have additional data on how different wheel sizes, tires, or brands affect range. It’d also be badass if they included a configuration for whether or not a lift kit has been applied to the vehicle since those are available as well (and I’ve got it).

Got a chance to try out FSD and quickly ran into two big problems. One was that the road I was driving had some closed lanes. While other vehicles were getting over at the "merge left" sign, FSD plowed ahead, waiting until the last second to move over. That may be technically correct, but it infuriated other drivers and in one case led to me having to hit the breaks as someone moved to prevent the vehicle from entering the open lane. Something similar happened when another vehicle was coming down the ramp to enter the highway when we were going past. Though there was room to move over, and certainly an opportunity to slow down, FSD kept going until the other vehicle was almost on top of the car and I had to steer it out of the way. In addition, there was a minor problem when I directed it into a neighborhood that was gated. FSD stopped so far back from the gate that there was no way to reach the controls to raise it. So I had to take over again. The problems with merging at a closed lane and handling vehicles merging from an on-ramp made the car seem, at best, very rude and at worst could have caused an accident.. FSD seemed to take no notice of what other drivers were doing in this situation. The problem with the gate wasn't a huge deal, but it seemed like something that a "robotaxi" would be expected to address.

This is most consistent problem I have noticed. Absolutely no awareness of how to handle backed up traffic...just zooms to front and then tries to edge in and tick everyone else off...or fail. It needs to merge sooner when there are gaps and just be content to wait like everyone else.

I am bitterly disappointed that Tesla removed the lane change feature on Autosteer. I can see the Banish feature in a busy city go "wild": You go shopping and the car is driving 3 hours around the block(s) without ever finding a parking spot. Then you finish shopping, call your car and drive home... That would mean, more cars in busy cities, driving around with nobody in them. The average number of people in a car could drop below 1 in such busy cities... I just hope, there's a solution... Well, robotaxis would also mean that the average number of people in a car could drop... maybe below 1 in extreme cases. There are times when people want to get IN a city and times when they LEAVE the city... And robotaxis would need to drive without any guest in them to the next pickup place which might be a usual commute drive away, just in a direction where less people go at this time of day... So, again more cars driving in the streets with less people in them...
