I stammer when I'm put on the spot , or when someone's expecting a reply from me. I've become antisocial because of this, Ive felt alone ever since it's come on in my teens.

I’m 39 years old and I’ve dealt with stuttering all my life. It’ll come on mostly when I’m emotionally heightened or at random with certain words. What’s helped me get through sentences the most is controlling my temperament and expanding my vocabulary. If I feel myself getting emotional I’ll calm myself down. Because if I speak during that state, nothing will come out anyway. And if I’m saying a sentence and I feel I’ll have trouble saying a word, I’ll try to think of a similar easier word to say to get through the sentence. Also, not sure why, but you can’t stutter while you sing. So sometimes I’ll try to drag words in a sentence together as if they are in a song. I still stutter to this day and these methods helped me with it the most. Hopefully, it can help others.

I can play with children and talk fine. I can usually speak OK with adults too in casual settings. But, if I'm in a meeting at work where people are speaking quickly and not taking turns in any order, it is virtually impossible for me to talk. Also, if I converse with someone who tends to keep changing the topic quickly going off on little tangents, I can't hardly speak at all. I think I think too deeply, so can't quickly change my focus. Stuttering is evil and has all but ruined my life.

Try deep breathing exercises. I noticed I do not speak correctly even when not stuttering. I speak half empty lungs. Breathe deeply and fully. You will notice you will speak in a deeper and more confident tone and you may eliminate your stutter entirely. Also eat healthy. Eliminate junk food - anything with added chemicals. I tried fasting once, and then after eating a raw egg in the morning, my speech was great tell evening. Lastly, same pain medications contain a stimulant. One of my students gave me one once and my speech was perfect.

Worth noting that a lot of poets stammered...Yeats and Philip Larkin come to mind. Reading the lives of the great poets ,you come across several who stammered often public school boys. This is worthy of investigation perhaps showing that the gift of poetry somehow triggers a reaction causing the stammer. Anyone for a phd on this subject?

In the 70's I went to the main library to understand why I stammered. The academic book said it related to too much testosterone in the womb as the most likely cause. Glad to see things have changed and that an explanation that makes sense to me is now in vogue.

This is nonsense. These are the symptoms, not the cause! The cause is purely mentally, and yes this affects your physical body. People who stutter don't stutter always. I disagree. Just because our stutter is hidden doesn't mean it's gone. We just learned to use our brain differently. In 'normal' people, speaking/talking is automatic. Not the case for someone with a stammer. Our brain is working overtime to compensate. Which is why our speech is sometimes a bit slower than the norm. In situations where the cognitive demand is higher, our stutter will unhide itself. :)
