It was revealed by his wife in 2013, two years after Jobs’ death, that he and his family had been donating ample sums of money anonymously for two decades. Yet there were countless articles prior to his death still accessible today criticizing his lack of public philanthropy despite his enormous wealth. I believe Jobs was a man who refused to allow public image affect his choices or his values. Bill Gates is widely lauded (rightly so) for the bill and Melinda Gates foundation, but jobs believed that it’s the contribution that matters, not the public praise. So he chose to donate anonymously. For decades Jobs had been criticized for being selfish, demanding, brutally critical, etc. and I’m sure there’s merit to those criticisms. But I believe that, just as with his philanthropy, jobs staunchly refused to show kindness or express gratitude for the sake of making people like him more. So when he does thank his team for their hard work and deflect credit from himself, as in the video, you know he’s being genuine, not doing it for the cameras. And just as his wife had to reveal to the world his philanthropy, it was his staff, not jobs himself, who insisted the world see this side of him, a side that he refused to publicize to better his image.

Both Steve Jobs movies show his true nature. Fassbender shows how tough he was with many people, but Kutcher showed a softer side. He was a hardass, but he cared immensely. No God, just a flawed man. Let's let him rest.
