When you make labels, make 2. Put one on the container and one on a business card that you put in the container. When you're checking stock, pull the labeled business cards for everything you need to order and you've already got your list. Replace the card when you restock. You can also leave the cards towards the bottom of the pile at your restock point. When you reach the card, pull it, and place them in a set location nearby for when you need to reorder. It helps to use a brightly colored card; maybe even a plastic one. You could get fancier with adding the mfg or a QR code to the place you buy them from. Toyota calls this a kanban system.

On the smaller plastic storage drawers consider hot gluing a sample screw to the face of the drawer for faster reference.

Nothing worse than having to buy something you have but can’t find. My old shop was 10k sqft. Really try to figure out steps, walking steps, The further you step the less efficient you are. Looking great Spencer!

Spencer what you really need are drawer cabinets like Lista cabinets. You can store fasteners deep in draws than those small parts organizers. You can just build your own drawers. For mine, I just use 1x4 & 1x6 for the drawer walls and 3/8 plywood for the drawer bottoms. The drawers were 36" wide by 24" deep. You can store a lot of fasteners & other parts. Schaller corporation sells various side drawer bins to store small parts. Another option for shop storage are roller cabinets that you can move around in your shop. for instance you could set up a roller cabinet with routers, router bits & jigs, or another roller cabinet for pocket hole jigs, fasteners, self centering drills, hole saws, etc. Another cabinet with biscuit\domino cutters & inserts. This way you can pull out the roller cabinet with everything you need for a task, and when your done, you just put the roller cabinet back & out of the way.

Spencer have you seen Festool's new miter saw with the moving fence that collapses to whatever angle you trace? You basically use it in tandem with a manual angle gauge (the type that you lock with the wing nut) and then take the angle gauge over to the miter saw. The blade stays planted and you do not move it. The fence unlocks and both fences move evenly to the angle around the planted blade. You then lock the fence and then you're good to cut. Since the fence is whats moving to conform to the angle you traced, you don't rotate the blade. If you're doing a double miter (2 pieces joining together to make the angle of what you traced), you can cut both pieces and not have to rotate the blade or flip the workpiece over to cut the 2nd piece. Probably gonna be the future of miter saw fences b/c it keeps people from having to figure out what angle the miter saw blade has to set on. There's a lot of guys that just do not understand that stuff and this kind of saw will make it dummy proof.

The space behind your organizers could be used for overstock. When you get a box that would over fill the bin, you could store the box behind in the space. Just have to put a reminder in the bin to let you know it is back there. Really looking forward to the shop buildout. I can only imagine how excited you must be to fill the space. ***(Should have watched to the end when you told us how you buy your fasteners.) My bad.

How do u thing he would get to that space ? When the bins are full that thing would be heavy even when a few are empty. If u tip it a little the bins would slide out making a mess. Ben there. I joined the carpenters union when I was !9 still there at 86. Great chanel'

When I was about 12 (6+ decades ago) my dad gave me a smaller version of those drawer organizers. I loved it then, and I'm gonna love these larger versions now! Thanks for reminding me, and thank you for the Amazon links. And I do use my Brothers labeler often. It must be very efficient because the batteries last for years! Lawrence

I have done something similar with Pack-out. That way I can wheel them around and also fill a Packout "day box" with the individual containers as needed.

Farm Store idea is excellent!

Another good place to look for nuts/bolts is an industrial fastener supplier. fastenal is the big one around but I use a local one that has way better pricing than anywhere else, even online.

I agree with your using wall space for storage of supplies and materials and hand power and unpower tools and walkways this changed my workshop over night by putting all power fixed tools in center/middle areas. Utilities were centralized elec, air, vacuum, etc. infeed and outfeed was maximized access to these power tools was enhanced for service cleaning and set ups. Dust removal was also enhanced as a single large line was run with seperate smaller lines gated for each tool. It started when I moved my mitre station to center of my shop. Of course a larger shop started the process for me as I finally had the space to use for maximum work efficiency of use and not maximizing for square feet utilization. Ray Stormont

Wow. This is a great video or what I wish you had put it up about 6 months ago. I have been building cabinets and drawers from palette lumber and scrap wood for all my screws, bolts, and nails. They take forever to build. Additionally. every shelf and partition is routed with a dado. I work on a cabinet an hour here and an hour there. Still, they are not perfect. I should have just bought those cabinets you have. They use space much more efficiently. I may still. Basically, I have no system and needed one badly. Sometimes I would look for an hour for a screw that I needed. Congratulations on your shop. It looks like it will be a well oiled machine. I think you could call it a Super Shop.

As you can see, the 64 drawer organizers start to sag when you load them up with enough bolts, nuts and washers. For my electronics components I use the 64-drawer organizers in similar shelving to you. But for my workshop, I went with the smaller 16-drawer organizers which don't tend to sag as much. You can also alleviate a bit of the sag in the middle by grinding off the little legs that make the cabinet lean backwards, or adding in some shims in the middle if you don't want to modify the cabinet. Also, if you've got a 3D printer, there's some STL files you can download from the usual places that will sub-divide those drawers rather than using the dreadful divider tab that Akro supplies. And you can also print custom drawers, then take a pair of side snips and cut out some of the vertical supports to get in large drawers, though if you are storing heavy bits of metal, I am not sure how that will work. Slick storage system on those larger bins for the dry wall screws. I don't use that many screws in my builds, but I stared at that enormous bulk box and thought "It comes in pints?!?" Lord of the Rings moment.

I wish I was the one that said "Organization comes through visibility", regardless it rings true. The Akro-Mils company has been around since 1946, same as me😁. Anyway, thanks for posting this! Don't be surprised if you call several more audibles while doing this.

I install roughly 36 cabinet sets per year, from a custom shop. Typical set is at least 2 or more colors. We use Sashco's "exact color match" caulking . Nothing worse than 7 similar green colored caulk tubes,and not knowing which one you need. 3years prior I bought the P-touch labeler ,and couldn't be happier. It gets used primarily for above reason, but also many other uses as well. I do recommend eneloop rechargeable batteries, to keep the green electronics killer away. Running after fastners,plumbing fittings is the #1 time killer...whether at home or on-site. If you can see or find it,if you have everything you need,if its readily accessible ...it will get done faster at work,and a higher chance of it being completed at home lol.

Love your channel and videos! I've learned a ton from you. When I lived out west I exclusively used Big Timber brand construction screws. I recently moved to Alabama and was disappointed when I couldn't find them and had to settle for GRK. So much so that didn't even finish using the GRK's I had purchased and ordered the Big Timber online. In my opinion they are that much better. They have cabinet head and flat (bugle) head. I buy 5 lb containers but you can get them in a large box too. They're worth a look. Thanks for what you do!

Really like what your doing to organize your shop. I like it so much I've saved this video to come back to once my new house is completed (in about 4 weeks) and my new 14'x32.5' woodworking shop is ready to move into. I'm sure I'll be using some of these techniques to get my shop up and organized. What's your technique for managing all those odds and end fasteners we accumulate from extra bolts, nuts and screws you get around the house? I just toss them all into a junk bin and sort through them when I need some odd part that I might just have a fastener for, interested in learning what others do.

Hi Spencer, I’ve always been curious about how you organize your various nail gun fasteners for taking to the job site. I’ve not come across any commercially available organizers that seemed well suited for this particular purpose. Thanks, David

When it comes to nut, bolt, washers stuff like 6-32 thru 1/2" I find it easier to stack those pieces in the same column of pull outs. So 6-32 bolt, below that is 6-32 nut, below that is 6-32 washer.

That’s why all the bins should be bigger and divided in three. Bolt washer nut in same bin.

They make a wall-wart plugin for your Brother label maker, it saves on needing 6 batteries.

I don’t know that it would help you because you are labeled so well. I have some clear trays like yours with a light behind the tray container to help light the trays. Great video!

Spencer, I have a question about mitering panel molding style picture frames for a coffered ceiling. I was using CA glue and the joints seem to be snapping as I was nailing them to the 1x6 on the ceiling. Is that something where I should be using hyper glue? I’m just afraid that the joints will now separate after I paint, or do you suggest I pull them off and glue them again with hyper? I love your channel!

Curious how you charge for supplies fasteners on the job.

What kind of edge banding did you use? Do they make a prefinished edge banding for the prefinished ply?

The issue you need to tackle is inventory control for your consumables. If you start off with 100 nuts, bolts, washers, etc.... and use 3 here, 4 there and 6 somewhere else, it's only a matter of time before you open the tray to get 6 more for a project and you find it only has 3 in the drawer. Need to have... and USE, some type of inventory control process. 🙂

I’m thinking a similar issue would be finding a method to bill consumables- % of something.

I started doing a dedicated fastener “area” in my shop… I got overwhelmed about 50% of the way through and lost motivation and now there are stacks of empty organizers sitting on the floor in front of it 😂🤣😂

I never have screws that are close in size next to each other. Be it in storage or in my job site boxes. I've had a couple instances where a slightly larger screw dropped into the wrong bin and I didn't notice and ended up putting a screw through the face of my millwork😯😩😡.

I saw you use a small clamp on corners. What are these called ?

Am I the only one that prefers Spax over GRK. Especially for cabinet screws (pan head wall cabinet type). They have much better thread.

We have Rural King and Tractor Supply in the Midwest.

You left out 12-24. Another common thread pattern.

You should go to your local county and have them change the the name of the street that your shop is on to spencerville road.

I know this is hyper anal, but my buddy is a cabinet maker and has a similar set up with barcodes, scanner and inventory software so he knows exactly what he has on hand and how much by simply glancing at his phone. May not work for you but it works for him. Cheers

Where do you order your grk from? I've been buying the 10lb boxes from the big box stores but I buy probably 150lbs a year between the different sizes I use

Mostly either Home Depot or Amazon depending on who has the better price. Unfortunately there isn't one place that always seems to have a fair price, so I always price check before ordering the big bulk boxes.
