New Santa Cruz 5010... it's a mullet?! - First Ride

There’s no use beating around the bush and trying to come up with some clever way to say this: the new 5010 is really fun to ride. I’ve been testing the bike around my home trails in Bellingham, WA, and have loved riding it on familiar and new terrain alike. My very first impression when riding the new whip is just how perfect the handling feels. It never felt like I had to learn the quirks of a new bike, change my cornering habits, or find the right balance point. Immediately I was pushing hard through corners and gapping trail features like it was my daily driver. With time, this feeling has only gotten better, as I dial in the setup and spend more time on it. I’m not entirely convinced that you can ascribe playfulness to any one bike in particular, as you can really set up most frames to ride in a wide variety of ways, but the new 5010 certainly streamlines that process and makes good times the priority, over all-out charging. All that being said, it still feels impressively capable for a 130mm bike, thanks in large part to the roomy geometry and the refined suspension kinematic.
The only downside to that improved suspension feel is on the climbs, where you do notice that lower anti-squat, especially on fire roads and steeper sections of trail. The bike climbs through technical sections very well, thanks to the improved grip and easy handling, but can feel a little bit soggy when you’re just trying to motor up to a descent. Luckily there’s a climb switch, and the ever-useful human trait of adaptation, which is sure to kick in sooner or later as you get used to a new bike. For me, I really like an upright pedaling position, so the relatively slack actual seat tube angle has been a bit frustrating, but with the saddle slammed forward things feel pretty comfortable.

The comments about the host are a bit off. While he seems to need a little polish to the presentation, the ride impressions are quality. Unlike most reviewers he doesn't just ride it and quote the brochure. As a new 2022 V4 owner (i didnt know V5 was coming out so soon!), he describes the experience perfectly. The 'firm' new Rock Shox comments are correct and it rides more Expert/Pro level (which I am not). The G2 brakes do fade at the first sign of sustained gravity and require XT replacements. In addition, for me I would suggest wider 35 wheels so it can handle the cornering G's with better support. So at first he may not be as smooth as others, I would listen more closely instead of just waiting to be entertained.

Agreed. For me, Loam Wolf is all about real rider reviews and it comes across as honest and descriptive. Aside from the use of "like", which is really not a big deal, this review is exactly the type of review that helps us understand the character and quality of the bike short of riding it ourselves. IMO, this was a very helpful initial impression.

Completely agree. I've been a professional speaker for over 20 years and I can absolutely see his personality. Combine that with honest, high level expertise and you get trust and connection. In today's world, honest expertise beats presentation perfection. I'd love links to Dario's social channels to hear more.

Thanks very much for watching Dubble Arr. Glad it got you the important info you were looking for.
Its great to see someone from a bigger MTB channel that isnt a AXS fanboy! Shimano XT for life baby!!!
Very helpful desriptions of handling and character!
Thank you for the insight.. It sounds like a great bike
Great review from my seat. As a shorter rider and an owner of a V4 Bronson you nailed it with the "ride with your feet" style these MX SC bikes foster. So fun.
1:25 thanks so much for the simplistic rationale for why seat tube angle matters. valid thoughts and criticisms that i havent heard other reviewers critical of. honestly all of the critiques are great to hear as it helps make a better more informed decision and feels like a paid advert. will be looking for more reviews in the same vein.
just an epic bike 💯🔥
Man Santa Cruz is really going all in on the mullet trend.
I just got a used 2021 V4. I had a feeling the mullet was coming for the 2023 after the Bronson. Not that I could afford a brand new one anyways ;) I'll clutch my "Well I have a shorter chain stay" pearls and still feel good about myself. The bike is way more rad then I can ride it lol

Same here. I just swapped out the air spring for a 150mm for only $40 and that made the bike feel a lot more stable and capable in the rough stuff and still feels fun.
Nice review. 275 out back is great but try it with a heavy casing 2.6” tire. If SC released the Bronson with a glove box I’d get i’d get one right now. Good to hear about the increased damping RS went with on the fork.
Really comprehensive review - thanks! 🤘🏼🤘🏼

Good review, trying to decide between new 5010 (mine is 2016, so im due!), HT, tall boy but think shy on travel, Ibis Mojo, stumpy, Trek....trail bike bike to do it all, i dont jump or drop much (but do like fast dhs but with aging back injuries and in my 50's i cant be crashing) but love steeps and riding anything challenging up or down. Cheers
I want one, but I would definitely buy just the frame
As another commenter noted, I appreciate you not just regurgitating what SC put in their marketing. This is the first review video of the new bike where there was no “jibby” used.

Haha thank you! WE appreciate it.
I think this dude needs to frame his skillset, speed and skill level so the typical intermediate to advanced rider takes this review in context. The fact he's out riding an EXO tire at normal tire pressure and finds the G2s as bad as he does means he's likely riding in the top decile of speed and skill, which doesn't do SC much justice regarding the commentary on spec. I do agree with his assessment of the G2 brake fade. I had the same experience on my new Pivot 429 Enduro, but switching my front pads to sintered Sram pads made my G2 brakes as powerful as my old XTRs with much more modulation and feel. With proper bleeding/bedding I nearly doubled my G2 braking power and have no squeal.
I have a 5010 V3. It's always been a super fun bike! I've taken mine everywhere (140 mm air shaft) and the only place I've truly felt underbiked was Moab, but I think that's in part due to the roll-over disadvantage of 27.5. I've never ridden a mullet, but yeah, that's where SC has gone now.

I converted my 130mm fox 34 to 140mm on my V2 5010. I actually prefer the feel of the 130 better. I feel it throws off the handling of the bike.

@@spicymountainbike Interesting observation. I have a 140mm air shaft ready to go into my 5010 v2. What of the handling was thrown off?
Thanks man great review and helping a ton on my next purchase. I love low standover of SC bikes and they just look cool. How do you think this would compare with something like the stumpy EVO? Im looking at that too. Finally, Im 5'10 and sc says large but man that seems like a long reach !
Just bought this bike. Been wanting a SC bike since i first saw one.

I like his review style! It fits right in with the rest of the loam wolf reviewers non robotic! I like to call it an “Everyman” review it’s using normal words like we’re bsing in the parking lot! Also I’m going to need to demo this if my shop gets some to demo!

Thanks for sharing Ryan. While Dario is new in front of the lens, we try to approach these from the mindset of, how would we reply if someone asked us in the trailhead parking lot, "What do you think of that bike?"
I just bought this for the upcoming Red Bull Rampage where I will be competing and likely taking 1st place.

Dario! Would this be a good bike for you on Oat Hill Mine trail in Calistoga?!?
Been on a new 5010 for a few months and it’s great but I’ve been chasing a phantom creak coming from the rear end. Any of you current SC 5010 owners experiencing this?

@romand123
11 ай бұрын
@@roellecorregidor1201 yea, it was coming from either the rear pivot or lower linkage. I took the whole rear end apart and regressed those pivots and know it’s fine. Not ideal but that’s the way it goes sometimes
@roellecorregidor1201
11 ай бұрын
@@romand123 creaking drives me insane and will bother me during a ride if I have one. I did the same thing as you, but it wasn’t one of the pivots, then I thought it was the bottom bracket. I currently have a Rocky Mountain and they use shitty press fit BB’s, wasn’t that. Turns out I just needed to lubricate the my dropper post and seat post.
Love your reviews, but can you add bike weight to them measure them and show a pic of the scale.

This is just a first ride review, we'll make sure to add weight in the long-term review.
Would love to hear feedback from a short rider. (From what I've seen taller and shorter riders generally have opposite reactions to a larger front wheel.)

I'm 5'6" and typically ride 29ers xc / hardtails. I got a chance to ride a Bronson a few times and I thought it was a hoot! I'd love to try this MX 5010.
SC while the bikes have improved over the years the company is not the same prior to the buy out they seem to focus on profit margin first (i.e. the poor brake selection ) The margin has to be 60% ?

Margin G2s and Code Rs (non RSC) nearly identical. Not sure why they did G2s here
The Degrees of the Angles are the reason a lot of people are giving the bike bad reviews.
I just can't figure out the backtyre. Conti that's for sure but what kind of Conti?
What riding pants are those?
Why don't you review the Mullet Peacemaker? Everything else seems to be a frankenbike.
What size is best for 5’9 height? Thanks
I luv my 2019 5010 . Saying that has anyone tried a 29 on the front w the older models w pike debon air forks? Or is that makable?
