New S-Stock Trains on the Metropolitan Line
It's August 2010, and new 'S-Stock' trains are being rolled out to the Metropolitan Line, and so we went with video camera in hand to go out on the network to track down the new train and compare the difference between the old A Stock, and the new units.
Recorded on 6th August 2010.

It's crazy to think that the first batch of these trains have been in service for nearly 10 years whilst the youngest for just 3! Time flies!

Imagine going back to 2010 and telling them that the Bakerloo trains that were potentially to be replaced in 2018 would actually not be due to be replaced for around 20-25 years…

@@idot3331 I’m sure we will because a lot has changed. Except for that snazzy deadpool face at the front, the 2009s don’t really feel much newer than 1995and6s but now we get aircon, screens, open gangways and cool interior lights. Not to mention the nice front.

the fact that these trains are already 13 years old is mind blowing
Wow - almost 7 years later. The open from end-to-end style is used on the Yonge line in Toronto and it's yielded the most interesting behavior: when there were separate cars, regular riders would know where to stand as they got on so they'd get off at their destination strategically (ie closest to the escalators, closes to the interchange tunnels). Since the Yonge line introduced "end to end", I've noticed the regular users now get on wherever they like but walk through the train to the 'ideal' exit door as their destination approaches.

Good point, i've noticed this (and done it myself) on these new ones on the metropolitan line. It's easier to wait nearer the end of the platform where fewer people will be (and therefore where there are more free seats), and then get close to the door you need when you need to.
@OntarioTrafficMan

I'm a daily commuter on the Yonge line and I definitely do this. I always ride at the south end of the train because it's less crowded (since many busy stations have entrances at the north end). As I approach my station, I walk to the north end of the train where the exit into my building is. And a lot of others do this as well, at Bloor station there is a parade of people moving southwards through the train, as people spread out along the train after boarding at the north end (where the main entrance is).
The chime as the doors open is so iconic

If u are watching in 2018 then you'll know that S stock has taken over the District, Hammersmith and Circle Lines too
When I was in London last year I’d just got off the deep-level tube to switch to the District Line, was steaming hot and so was really glad to see an air-conditioned S-Stock roll into the station.
I'm glad to see London is getting air-conditioned trains. I've just returned from a 2 week trip to London (yes, in that cold weather), and was surprised to see how warm the carriages get when full (I was mostly on the Northern line). I can't begin to imagine what they're like in summer.

Those trains still feel new to me. I have many memories of the older ones with the high backed seats. I was pretty shocked when the new trains appeared, British infrastructure had been so far behind for so long it seemed a miracle to see and touch the new trains. Walk through trains and air conditioning, was I dreaming?? :) Next I was most impressed by the London Overground new interiors.
As frustrating as it is that the Bakerloo line has seemingly been a bit neglected and not had new trains, I love the carriages on it. Somehow remind me of a 1940s casino!

They said that the S stock replacement'd be complete by 2015.It's 2017&there're still D trains out.
I miss the 'big mets' probably just nostalgically though.. I would have to get one every morning from Uxbridge when I was growing up. I remember being freezing cold in the mornings.. The S stock is a beautiful unit, they are very well built. Also, air con is a god send. The common misconception amongst commuters is that air con is for cooling, when actually the temp is automatically regulated for comfort. I think they are set to 22 degrees at a guess.

I'm not sure why the Metropolitan line doesn't do it, but the H&C, Circle, and District lines all share the same trains (S7 stock), which are regularly switched between lines, and changing all the grab rails would be very tedious.
Wow.....looking at the other comments, it seems I'm not the only one that can't believe it's already been 13 years since the S-Stock started service!
Love the Mary Quant bob.
I’d never stopped to think just how much better the S line is compared to the old stock. I wasn’t old enough to ride them during the summer. They must have been absolutely unbearable.

I am an S Stock fanatic, and I travel on the metropolitan Line a lot, however since I mainly travel on the Uxbridge branch, I have not had the pleasure of riding one. Other members of my household have though, and they have, amazingly, criticized it!
Yeah, it's true, these are on the Metropolitan, District, H'smith & City and Circle
I can’t believe the S Stock are almost 10 yrs old.. I feel old even though I was 5 when these came into service
I hate having no air conditioning on the train, I use it to go to school everyday and sometimes I find it difficult to breathe at times when it is incredibly packed
I've just seen the date on this video! I was going to say those new trains look similar, inside at least, to the trains that now run on Thameslink
Any news on the Bakerloo Line trains? 🚇
Lovely film, and presenter. The S stock will be restricted to 62mph, even after the signalling upgrades, whereas when it was built the A stock had a top speed of 70mph. Simon

A modern signalling system doesn't restrict trains to a reduced speed.
@BaileyChap
Жыл бұрын
I looked up the specs and apparently 62 mph is the top speed, not just one the train is limited to, so even if LU wanted to increase the service speed they couldn't. The A stock regularly hit 70 mph in its prime, so it's sad that such speeds won't be continuing.
0:46 well the sub surface at minimum, still got the northern and central line overcrowded or unreliable trains (in that order)
2:20 S8 Stocks aren't the first trains to have air conditioning on the Underground - the title goes to the 1983 Tube Stock, though they were troublesome :/
It is a shame that there isn’t unique painted handrails, but the moquettes make up for them. It would be a pain to give individual S Stock to all the lines, it’s more efficient to have all the trains running on the line with a single colour but notices to tell us what line the trains are on.
What's wrong with me? I really like the train screeching for some reason
The Bakerloo line is the only one I haven't been on in the 2 times I've visited London.

"Maybe an upgrade for the Balerloo line in 2018" here we are at the start of 2019 and nothing's happened.
If only we actually got those Bakerloo trains in 2018..
Thing is tho, i think the "less seats but more standing room" is not very good, take some advice from the bus world, the more people who are sitting the happier they are. most of the time with these newer trains when it's crowded, all the seats are taken and you end up having to stand and on longer trips this can be a pain and when you do get a seat or you get the chance of getting one early it's so rock hard that you feel like standing, and I know that it's a metro train but even most metro trains aren't that hard (looking at you purple line). But I also get that those sorts of trains get extremely crowded so in my opinion they should use what I call an inline to window seat ratio. A good example of this is the b2k stock of the DLR (which are being replaced by b23 stock which is all inline) Thing is that you need a good balance of window seating to inline seating that takes in to acount on the type of train, route, and journey time. so yes, THE MOST OF THE NEW STOCK TFL IS GETTING IS GARBAGE FIGHT ME
I remember riding this when i went to Science museum
