Last D-Stock District Line Train
The Last D78 District Line train ran on the 21st April 2017, making several trips all day between Upminster and Richmond, and then a final trip to Ealing Broadway.
The first train of D78 Stock entered service on the District Line on 28th January 1980. It replaced CO/CP and R Stocks then operating on the line.

Part of my beautiful memories in London was riding on these single-doored trains. The classic front, its PA system, the seats, the door, the sound...All these were deeply imprinted in my memories. Goodbye D-stock. Glad to have ever ridden on one :-(

D Stock trains looked and sounded their best prior to their refurbishment, especially during the 80's when they sounded very much like the 1983 Tube Stock.

I rember designing a website in the early 2000's with the original D-Stock Moquette colour scheme many years ago. The I.T. teacher was confused at my unusual choice of graphic design, and when asked where I got my inspiration, 'tube train seating upholstery' seemed to bewilder him. I was sooooo nerdy back then, and I was only 11.

I always remember being at Hammersmith station, and hearing D stocks departing and arriving as I went down to the platform. I'll also miss how you could see so many d stocks and and only like two circle trains during the stretch from glocester road to tower hill. The thing I will miss most is the sounds it makes when it hits welded track or track joint which bursts out rhythm in my ears. RIP D Stock. I wish I was there!!

I have lived at both ends of the District for 40 years on and off, and these trains were so well designed and built, apart from the too narrow doors. The pre refurb interior smell was the tube equivalent of damp dog. Musty yet somehow familiar, thus comforting.

I remember being on Earl's Court in the morning on my way to Paddington when the station lady mentioned that it was the last day the D-stock was running. I used to catch it all the time when I worked in Bow and to me it was just another old Tube train. To be honest, I prefer the S-stock now because you can walk through the train, it has air conditioning during the warmer months and there's decent heating in the colder months.
I love the pretty whistles on these trains.
I'm a New Yorker who likes the Tube. IMO, the train looks like it could last another 10 years.

These trains essentially ran the length of my life - hugely nostalgic for them (well before the revamp...)
These trains will always be remembered, I came to Richmond and Kew Gardens in 2012 and I would always see these glorious trains. The only thing on my bucket list is to see one in real life. Converted or not. The clacking sound on the tracks and the motor sound will be in my head forever. It’s front and single-doors we’re so beautiful to watch leave Richmond and Kew Gardens. I almost cried when I heard the song at Kew and when I watched the last one leave for Upminster on April 21st, 2017. That was the last time I ever saw a D-Stock.

So many enthusiasts criticise the 1992 TS, albeit for it's maintenance liability; however I love the 1992 TS trains for their body-side window-glazing which extends into the roof-profile, a great design feature. I also love the body-profile which doesn't have a crease at waist-level thus creating maximum space for the interiors. I also love the ambience of the interiors for the dim lighting.

Brilliant video. The D stock has been one of the greatest Underground trains in the history of London Transport. Looking forward to travelling on the S stock trains in the future.
From some reason, I always liked the D-stock because its overhead voice that comes on at each station was more melodic than the more monotone voice of the S-stock, especially the Bow Road Station (westbound, towards Mile End).

I love all London underground trains, I got on the s stock yesterday we went past the depot and I ACTUALLY SAW THE SAME CLASS ON THE D STOCK🤑🤩😢
Thanks for the video! I got a bit emotional.. RIP D-Stock
a few months ago, i luckily got on a d stock at tower till going to Wimbledon and got on one on the 16th of April from embankment to Wimbledon. i loved the d stock. it was my childhood. the seat moquette, the transverse seats and the front of it. i just love it. shame they are gone now. one last thing, some guests came to my house for a while and saw the d stock on its last time going to earls court. the train was obviously very busy. they even took a video of it. :-D and :'(
A lot of these trains were actually adapted for overground use. Last year I was using a service between bletchely and Bedford with these modernised d-stick trains, and aside from a facelift and some new seats, it is relatively the same! However the flip up seats were removed...
Well Done (!!) Great Package... tells the story well :-)
Missed seeing the D78s on my last visit back home. Happy memories of working these as a guard out of Acton then Parsons Green Depots. I missed then when opo displaced the guards, and now I miss them again. Was hoping TFW would lease some for our branch but after scrapping the nasty pacers we’ve had other old stock cascaded for our service while the D trains are apparently in North Wales.
Another classic video!!

I learnt how to drive the overground trains (465, 377, 375, 387 and 395.) But I am still learning how to drive the D stock, jubilee, s stock, bakerloo and Northern lines.
When I saw a D-stock at Richmond last week while waiting for my South West train to Reading, I thought nothing other than "What a surprise, long time no see!" I wasn't expecting that to be "Good bye" as well.. :(

I may have been on one of these trains as a child as my family sometimes used the District Line going from Wimbledon to South Kensington. I don't really remember it though. Only childhood memory I have of the Tube is of one of the deep level stations on the Piccadilly line.
I'm so happy the "D" Stock trains are going to be reused and not scrapped like the 1967 Stock, A Stock C Stock and the one that I thought was the biggest waste was the 1983 stock because I think it had the shortest life out of all the tube trains but I'm not entirely sure
MTR has just made a send off to the 12 car SP1900 trains in a similar manner. There was a special announcement when the last service arrived at Sheung Shui at 11:57 pm, with the train number changed to 886 when it returned to the depot.

My favorite London Underground train. I remember going on them in the 80s and I thought they were pure quality with their Aluminium skinned carriages and the elegant single outer doors that looked so ultra modern and clean in design. They were quiet and powerful when pulling out of a station and of course were made by Metro-Cammell at Washwood Heath, England before the Company was taken over. I wonder why they are being replaced; I guess in these times where labour is more expensive than in the past the bean counters decide to pull the plug on keeping older designs going, I dunno. After all the wearing parts like bogie bearings will presumably have been changed many times in their long life. On the other hand new trains are usually lighter and have regen braking to save energy.
I remember when that was new! Feeling old!
