The use of pressure to change volume and the bending ability of the reed shows they cater to reed players and understand how we think while crafting our sounds. I like to record with another instrument jamming with me (jam sessions are hard to come by my way), so improvising with the Aerophone, with my sax and trading 4’s is fun for me. This new Aerophone seems like it’s worth every penny by what I’ve seen and heard, Jay! Hope you enjoy it, and looking forward to hearing your future thoughts on it

I like the sounds as they are usable and onboard, and Roland will probably have an app to go along with the unit. I like the fact that it has a built in speaker, phone jack, speaker out and bluetooth for different connectivity options. $1500 is a little pricey, but do-able. Key noise is a little annoying, but I never really learned to play EWI as the USB version was a poor offering and very limited. This seems like a more mature/evolved product than what I've seen before in this market. Thanks for the review Jay! Looking forward to the next one!

My questions for your full review... is it worth it to upgrade from the AE-10? I like the synth sounds that are available and that it is a fully programmable synth, which is awesome. I use my akai ewis ( of which I have 4, lol) primarily for theater work. I am a woodwind doubler that doesn’t play double reeds and I have found acoustic emulations of bassoon, oboe, english horn a godsend for those times when the theater budget doesn’t allow for the full orchestration set to be used. I also use the bass clarinet and Bari sax emulations when space is at a premium. I have been using Audio modeling for those emulations. It would be nice to eventually have excellent acoustic emulations available in the instrument itself rather than hauling around a computer for those emulations. As a soloist in small group jazz settings , all I use are synth sounds. I ask that you don’t short change us pit folk by applauding the company for ignoring the sounds that are my money makers, lol. Jay, have you tried the new Yamaha TDS-150 yet? I'm pretty happy with my AE-10, which I use mostly for those times when I need to practice quietly. But while the keywork is reasonably sax-like, it does have some issues. I don't much like the palm keys--they just don't feel right--and the little Bb bis key is too far from the left index-finger key--sometimes it actually pinches! The Yamaha looks like the keys might be much closer to those on a real sax. But I'd be really interested in hearing your take on this. How about doing a comparative video on the AE-10, AE-30, and the TDS-150?

  • @TerryAndHerSax

Fantastic synth sounds but the noisy buttons and high price kills it for me, which is a great shame because I thought Roland would have been far more conscious of this and would have used much higher quality buttons. Roland is synonymous with quality - I have one of their electric pianos which is outstanding - but the ae30 may buck the trend with these controls.

Hello.. I would like to learn sax and saved some money, for reasons of originality because even with all its risks, one would like a real sax because I have never had it.. But this Ae30 puts me in doubt, since it has different octaves in addition to others effects, what do you recommend? What would be good, to buy a real alto or tenor sax or this new artifact

  • @IC-qv2to

    @IC-qv2to

    Жыл бұрын

@@identificador1952 if you wanted to learn sax, go for a real one. In the future, if you want you can play the ae30 but you won't be able to play the saxophone at a proper level if you don't practice each day with a real saxophone due to the embouchure and the key activity. Now, between tenor and alto, I would say it's up to you which one you like the most, even though most people prefer to begin with the alto (it's less heavy and more compact for small hands).

Jay I have the Yamaha WX11, and I do love the fingering action better than the Casio DH100 that I had. I'll be honest to say that the DH100 is no where near comparable to the WX11. Coming from a saxophone, like myself, how is the fingering action of the short clicky keys oppose to the longer action keys of a real sax? I have been training myself to keep the fingers on the keys lightly during the scale exercise, to save abuse of the keys and speed up reaction when I need them. I really do love seeing the feature of the Aerophone synth, but have heard that those who love the WX love the fingering action. You played both a real sax and this Aerophone. What are your thoughts?

He said EWI (short for Electronic Wind Instrument). EVI is the (Electronic Valve Instrument). He meant that because EWI fingerings can be logically built and do not require adherence to physical acoustics, they provide very natural flexibility to allow performance of otherwise impossible passages with relative ease by using common sense adjustments to standard saxophone/clarinet/flute styled fingerings. In short, the EWI fingerings take the acoustic trill key and empower it to trill everything, not just F# G# or Bb.

Thumb octave keys look just like the WX5 setup. But maybe they're soft pads that require more pressure. I also wish they would make rollers on these physical keys (C-Eb on the WX5 is nearly impossible) so are there other options for those notes? More of a flexible, not acoustically limited emulated, fingering system? As someone not a sax player I'm more interested in how flexible the fingering system can be. Any thoughts on that now that you've had this for a week?

I don't really think any company has nailed a good feel on the octave keys. The old Yamaha wind synths had the same design these Rolands now have and I found them manageable but awkward. The Akai rollers took me awhile to get used to and keeping that light touch as I would glide over the top of them. I will still glitch sometimes going over breaks. This thing has some very cool synth sounds. Does this synth have the ability to really edit the sounds or have the capability of loading new sounds entirely? Thank you for the demo and all the great content on your channel, Jay!

Hmmm does it reaaaaally need the bottom tailpiece type thing that extends beyond the right hand keys, I wonder? Would be nice to see some mechanical switches being used in these too, so there is a nice feedback when a key fully engages.

Jay, I was considering buying the roland but managed to snag a Yamaha YDS-150 instead. I am a first time sax (wannabe) player. I dont have the wind for a real sax, which is why I bought a synth. Do you think I would benefit in taking some of your courses, seeing as how I will be trying to play the YDS-150? Thanks in advance, I really dig your channel !

Jay. I looked at the comments and one said you didn't do any sax sounds. But dream with me here. Is it midi where you can possibly get Warren Hill, Everette Harp, Eric Marienthal etc. sounds from keyboard programs? Another one Does it have trumpet keys on the side?

Hi. I'm wondering if it is possible to use this midi sax with any vst plugin? I would like to use it with Serum and other synth plugins and map the controlls to various settings. Is this possible?

Thanks! I understand that in an amplified situation, that would not be a problem (gosh, musicians donʼt hear each other, sometimes...), but I _think_ that the loud clicking keys would drive me mad. Quiet room, open headphones (Grado SR-325, Sennheiser HD600) and low- to medium-level via loudspeakers. But then, thereʼs the word *_Pro_* after _Aerophone_ ...

Do these Wind Synths transition simply from a Acoustic instrument. Or do they require additional practice and learning. I wonder! Because I won't buy one for myself, (maybe for a relative), because attaining more musical skill might not be an option right now. Thank you.

Have you had a chance to compare this to the Yamaha YDS 150? Neither one is available in stores in the USA as of yet.... I'm most interested in the keys - whichever has the most "sax like" is my preference. FWIW, digital pianos make noise (the keys, even with headphones), and people complain about that. Since I would be using this gizmo for silent practice, that is an issue. I have the AE-10 and hate the keys, especially the left hand thumb (too small!), which appears identical. Thanks.

Nice review Jay. I still prefer my Yamaha WX5, even though you have to connect to a voice module. Great Roland sounds though, but it looked like the flow and fluency of a real sax has not really been reproduced here...

Sounds like typing class in school. Plastics engineers need to study wool felt and silent ways of making little things move without those noises. This will not work in a small combo at acoustic levels of sound. In a Hammond organ the keys are fixed on spring hinges not teeter tottering on pivots. The beat organ key ever made.

That's really cool. I've never played a wind synth and I'm wondering, do you need to have a tight embouchure like a saxophone to play it? Or can ya just pick it up and blow like a recorder? Do you need to have your top teeth on the mouthpiece?

Funny, I think I had a 5000 for 3 days also, before returning it. I'm sticking with the 4000 also. I've a a WX5 & WX7, as well as an earlier EWI (3000?). Using the 4000 with the Roland XV2020 module works for me, but I wish they would come out with an EWI with great built-in sounds. Still not there yet!

Those buttons are so loud that its not only a distraction to the player but it truly drives the band nuts. We don't even let it on stage anymore. We compare it to a person in am elevator texting with their keyboard ticking sound on. The music just can't drowned out. I love the synth sounds. I pray they mute the buttons so I can use it. Until then the keyboard gets to have all the fun and im just the sax player again lol but not lol.
