NEW Rocna 55kg anchor installation & chain re-painting on our Nordhavn 43 trawler!

After being anchored in place for 36 hours, we are now set to get FREEDOM back on the water!
After several months spent mostly at anchor, we decided it was time to bite the bullet and invest in a new Rocna 55kg anchor. We have heard nothing but good reviews, and know several other boaters with this model who swear by its reliability and consistency holding bottom in all types of anchorages.
The installation was the easy part, but the re-painting of the anchor chain depth markers was the hardest of the project. Overall not too difficult, but time consuming watching the paint dry.
Enjoy!

I agree completely! A Fortress would be the way to go for something different. I just didn't want you to get rid of the big Bruce in the mean time because it's better than nothing if you lose the Rocna for some reason. We are based out of SE Florida and spend a lot of time amchoring here and in the Bahamas, so mostly sandy bottoms. We use a genuine Bruce 150 kg (because a Rocna will not fit my pulpit) and a Fortress FX-125 as backup. Fair winds and calm seas Captain Don & crew!

We enjoy your adventures!! just a real simple way of marking your chain is to use colored zip ties, leave the tails long, they are easy to see and go through the winch with no problem. Enjoy your new Rocna, we love ours!

Hi, we mark the anchor chain a bit different, we paint one shackle for 25 feet, two shackles for 50 feet, 3 shackles for 75 feet, you get the idea. We only use one color of paint, makes the job easier. With regards to how you used only one D shackle before the 360 degree rotating swivel. You are better off using two D shackles. This way when the boat swings around the anchor, you never have a side load on the rotating pin, which can bend the part that turns and prevent it from rotating. I have seen this several times. I work for neptunus yachts for more than 30 years and several times i have seen a bend rotator. Also make sure you use a lock s/s wire for the D shackles.

On N55-24, and on our N47 prior, we installed Rocnas and never drug anchor, once set. As for marking the chain, I’ve given up on painting. The course sand of the Bahamas and Florida wear the paint off in a matter of weeks. We now use zip ties at 25 foot increments. They last several months and are super easy to replace as needed. The 25 foot lengths allow us to think in terms of number of links, eg, if we’re in 20 feet of water, we’ll put out “3,” plus the 25 foot snubber which leads from a bow eye at water level. Simple!

I too have found paint doesn't last long but zip ties seem to just get eaten by the windlass in short order. Plus I usually paint about a 2' segment so it's easy to spot as it goes over the pulpit compared to a few zip ties. I've yet to find a perfect solution other than a chain counter and even those I've had some issues with.

I'd probably go with something very different than the Rocna for a second anchor to give more options for if the first won't hold. Instead of something in the plow style, maybe a more of a danforth style that works well in soft bottoms? In my area we typically deal with mud and danforth (Guardian, Fortress, etc) types that hold based on sq footage of the fluke size work well and are lighter to handle. They won't do so well in rock or coral though. Having two very different styles ready to deploy would give more options should they find one won't set well.

You'll love the Rocna in the NW. As you start anchoring further north, you find most people have 3-400 feet of floating line on a reel for stern ties. It's often the only way to keep an anchor set in a steep bottom close to shore. Next time you pull all the chain to paint it, you might consider swapping it end-for-end to get more life out of it.

I’ve seen people paint their anchor chain by placing the portion of chain that you wish to paint in a bag. Shoot the paint all over the chain inside of the bag. Then droop it over some 2x4’s laid on their edges to let it dry. The bag contains all of the spray so you don’t need to lay down as much drop cloth material. I’ve not tried it myself, but it seems like an interesting idea. Good luck.

Loved the video! We used to have a galvanized Danforth-style anchor on Gusto, our 79 Mainship 1. All steel starts to rust eventually and this anchor was leaving a lot of stains on the deck, so we replaced it with a Fortress anchor which is made of an aluminum allow. They're not cheap, but nice thing about them is they don't rust. They are also much lighter, which is nice since Gusto does not have an anchor winch.

I have gotten about 2 seasons on the paint. Same method as you, but not as cautious about masking. I put cardboard down to keep from painting dock. The first 100 feet is pretty bad after 2 seasons, the second hundred better, the 3rd good for another 2 years. I found white not to be a great choice. Now using blue at anchor and at 100 foot intervals, red at the 25’s and now green at 50 foot intervals. Spray chain with salt away as a clean up prior to paint. Great video.

I had to chuckle thinking, way back when, I helped my dad mark his 350' of chain on his GB36 that was moored at Shilshole. We laid out the chain just like you did. Similar experience with what "drop cloth" to use under the chain while spraying. Wax paper or a fabric drop cloth work well. Just be sure to lay plastic on the dock, in case any paint soaks through.

Interesting comments I think every anchor has its benefits depending on multiple factors like bottom consistency, grass and weed, rock (size of rock will affect things) chain/rode scope, I carry a couple different kinds. After anchoring for 30 years the one constant I have seen is ANY anchor will drag or not reset. The Excel and Rocna seem to be the best but... I'd look to use thick paint that will form a thick skin on the links. Spray paint only coats the links with a thin layer of paint. Try laying the chain links between wooden trestles with a tarp under the trestles. It also gives 360 degree drying.

Painting a chain is never fun, but it's probably easier to do when you need to get hauled out for something else. Shipyards usually have some scaffolding racks you can use to hang the chain so you can get all sides at once and the paint doesn't stick to anything. I used rust oleum primer and their industrial paint which was supposed to be the best. It was applied to new chain and even with all that it is already flaking off and doesn't look very good. I think I'll just stick with my chain counter.

Hi Folks, Great video that could be called “One of the many things you have to do on a periodic basis when cruising full time”, for the viewers learning from you about the cruising life. You probably did a ton of research on which anchor to buy but for the cruising dreamers here’s a few more thoughts. 1. Practical Sailor Magazine used to recommend the Rocna and the Spade. After some bad experiences from users of the Rocna with the roll bar getting caught in rocks, they recommend only the Spade. And, Rocna brought out the Vulcan to address this problem AND, as they claim, to have an anchor for boats that did not accommodate the roll bar on their bow roller configuration. Whatever...The user community has found the Rocna, Spade, Ultra, and Mantus(sp?) ALL to be very dependable and superior to the old favorites Bruce and CQR that are commonly being replaced now. The Rocna got hot in the Nordhavn Owners world and is the most popular for good reason, it works. It’s just not the only brand that works. 2. Swivels are noir without controversy. A NOG Expert Advisor states that the number one source of ground tackle failure that he has seen is the swivel. It’s a much more complicated (and expensive) solution to a problem (anchor coming out of water misaligned with the bow roller) that either a) doesn’t happen often at all, or b) is easily corrected when it happens. 3. There are as many paint schemes as anchor choice opinions. Here’s a simple one recommended to me: RED = 100’, WHITE = 200’, BLUE = 300’, RED=400’ (the end). Guessing at 50’ increments in between the colors is “good enough” for most anchoring situations, or just let out more to be on the safe side. 4. Another paint method. Get a 5 gallon plastic bucket. Spray the chain as you feed the chain into the bucket. Spray a bunch more paint on the chain as it sits in the bottom of the bucket. Let it dry. Lift chain out and spray it as you drop it back in bucket and repeat as many times as you need. Dry in bucket overnight. Then, repeat with the next color the next day or get more buckets to do it all on one day. Saves using and throwing away all that plastic and alu foil. As with many things on cruising boats there is no one-best-way and there is an over abundance of free advice! Safe Travels.

Hi, nice job painting your chain. I never was so diligent, so when I installed a Maxwell RC-12 anchor winch a couple of years ago I also installed a Maxwell Auto Anchor 560 V2 counter The counter works great. I recently ran all 600 feet of my chain out to clean the chain locker & fresh water wash the chain and the counter showed 606 feet. So, did they sell me 606 feet of chain? Or is the counter off by 6 feet? (1%) I will never know! I think all of the Maxwell vertical winches are drilled for the magnetic sensor, making retrofitting the counter relatively easy. I sure like having the readout in the pilot house way better than trying remember a paint scheme.

Although a tooth brush can be used to clean all the chain links, a more thorough job can be accomplished with a tooth pick, then all carefully flossed.

We wonder how many folks would have cranked up their engines just to move up into the slip... I mean, hey that boat weighs as much as a herd of elephants.... and yet you two just gave her a tug on the rope and away she went... I know, what does a boat weigh? its anchor.... LoL be safe, Tim and Cat

Hey, Elizabeth and Shawn, I saw your video again and I'm surprised that after the big job of pulling out the whole chain, changing the anchor, painting the chain and cleaning the anchor shaft, you didn't paint the anchor shaft. Why? You had it so easy!

Why not an Ultra Anchor ? As for me and my nautical house we will do what Tony Fleming does ! Great video as always ! Give mr Sully a stack too. Anchor swivel yes ? Would a small pressure washer be nice to have ? Excellent explanation and painting.

Mr. Fleming is certainly a respectable source of information and I do like the Ultra, but I haven't used it myself. I have used the Rocna (in the PNW no less, so MV Freedom's home waters) and I've had great luck with it. I'm sure the Ultra would be a good choice but if I'm buying tomorrow it's a Rocna. I don't think I've ever heard anybody speak poorly of it.

That’s a nice anchor it should do well for you. Have you heard about MV Aurora 120 I guess that boat has been a real nightmare with needing millions of dollars worth of refit and repairs. I saw scathing review of the work they did building the boat in China. 🙋‍♂️🖖👏😷🇳🇴🇬🇧=🇺🇸⛵️

I watched a sailboat vid. on youtube and the poster whose name eludes me now put colored spongy-rubbery pieces in the chain-link (designed for that purpose ) and he was claiming that was far better than paint which didn't last.Might have been a "Sailing Fairisle "vid.but not sure on the name.

You have opened up the devil's cauldron discussing what anchor you purchased. If you hang out in forums such as the trawler's forum, you quickly learn that asking what anchor to purchase or why you bought what you bought is akin to Republicans and Democrats discussing gun control. I first tried to purchase a Rocna anchor in 2004 but they were made in Australia back then and getting one into Canada was difficult. I actually emailed the builder, blanked out on his name, and suggested he have part of the anchor put together in North American, thus garnishing the coveted "assembled in America" designation. I just googled and they are manufactured in China but quality control is done through the now current head office in Vancouver. Swivels: the stand on swivels seems to be slowly changing but I was surprised when I just went to the Rocna site, they now discussing adding a swivel, their original stand was - don't use one. Drew Frye published a book in 2018 that most have never heard of called "Rigging Modern Anchors." In this book, his stand on swivels is against them: "DITCH THE SWIVEL After fixing this on three boats .., I felt I must share something so plainly obvious that it is commonly overlooked.... The anchor is coming up backwards most of the time, and twisting it around to come over the roller is a battle. The easy, or at least obvious solution, is to add a swivel: it don't solve the backwards anchor problem, it only makes rotating the anchor on the the roller easier. ,,, If the wind or tide created a twist in the anchor chain, it will untwist as soon as it clears the bottom because it can't turn in the windlass. In fact, the only way a twist can remain between the anchor and the windlass is if you install a swivel and the swivel has allowed a rotation...... If you can't resist the urge to install a swivel, at the very least include a shackle between the swivel and the anchor." Full disclosure: I have a Rocna and a swivel without a shackle, so far no problems. I almost forgot to add, the way to paint your chain is go dumpster diving for a box roughly the size of one a lawn mower would come in. Then put notches in either side so that the chain can set in with out sliding into the box. You should be able to get a couple of rows of chain in the box, hung up side to side. You then cover with plastic the chain not to be painted and spray paint the area desired. Then just leave the chain to dry while hanging in the box. Now there is no surface to stick to any other surface.
