We are waiting on this particular coop to be shipped to Hawaii. Thank you for making such an in depth video with pros and cons! It helps us feel like we made the right choice.

Do you mind providing the exact dimensions for LxW? Tractor supply gives a range so I am confused how wide it actually is

We just ordered this coop and I’m really excited now that I’ve seen your video! Could you tell me more about the sweet pdz? Is that all you use inside the hen house or do you use another type of bedding along with it? Also, how are you liking the sand in the run? Is that working for you?

I'm so glad the video was helpful! Sweet PDZ Stall refresher is typically used in horse barns/stalls - I bought a couple bags from our local Tractor Supply. It cuts down on the ammonia smell and keeps the roost area dry (and bug free! We haven't had any mites!). It is safe to use in the composter and garden which is why I chose that material for the hen house. Like everything in the chicken world there is a difference of opinion on whether it is safe to use Sweet PDZ under the roost bars. I was told that Sweet PDZ would damage the respiratory system of chickens because of the dust it creates but, from MY experience, that is not the case. I have had Sweet PDZ in my coop since March 2023 and none of my girls have any respiratory issues. When I clean the waste out to the hen house I use a kitty litter scooper and put the waste into my composter and leave the door open for a bit afterwards until the dust settles. Sweet PDZ does create dust when its scooped so, I will not scoop right before they roost for the night or while there is a hen laying in the nest box. Sweet PDZ is the only product I use under the roost bars. In the nest boxes, I use a little plastic faux grass square and pine shavings and dried lemon grass leaves on top. Sand works VERY well in our run area since we get so much rain in the summertime here in Florida. It can get a bit soggy during rainy season so to keep the flies away I scoop it every couple days just the same as the Sweet PDZ in the hen house and toss the waste in my composter as well. Thankfully the sand doesn't stay soggy for long! My girls free-range during the day so, they are not in the run full time. I purchased a few bags of All-purpose washed sand from the paver section of Home Depot and again I was also told that sand would cause crop impaction. That has not happened to any of my girls and I have seen them eat the sand. I would recommend the Sweet PDZ and Sand as they work well for our coop!

I plan on purchasing the same coop. How many chickens did you put in yours? Also I would suggest to cut 2x4's and screw it to the current roost bars as chickens prefer to roost on flat surface rather than curl their feet. You can still get them out to clean them. I've read this can lead to bumblefoot if the surface isn't flat. Hope this helps! Lovely coop.

Hello and thank you for watching! I currently have 5 chickens in this coop but they free range during the day! I think if chickens were not permitted to free range then you might find the run area a bit too small for 5 chickens. And thank you for the tip on the roost bars! That is definitely an upgrade we plan on doing in the near future!

I have this one assembled - my only complaint is the gap where roof meets coop walls - I feel like predators can get in

Yes i agree! The gap was large enough to let rodents into our coop. We completely filled the gap with canned spray foam. That worked to keep pests out and we haven’t had any issues since! Hope that helps!

For a pre fab coop it's pretty good, the 2 huge cons are , not something that will survive a hurricane and chicken poop run off going in the pool, but I see you do have a dirt spot where you can move it.

You’re definitely right - it’s not Hurricane proof! It has sustained some pretty significant winds this summer but, we haven’t seen winds over 80mph yet. I’m open to any ideas you might have to make it hurricane safe! And fortunately our pool has a raised top mount coping so water runs away from the pool. Maybe someone with a flat edge would have to be concerned with that but, my understanding is that pools are not constructed to have water or anything run in to them.

@the_petit_place I'm in Puerto Rico 🇵🇷, hurricane 🌀 alley, right now I'm not sure if Tammy will turn or hit us, but I'm not worried because the coop I built is 100% hurricane proof. I have seen videos with these twist in dirt anchors, that's the only thing I know exist for light structures.

Do you by any chance know the dimensions of the boxes that it came in? (Trying to figure out if we can pick it up instead of getting it delivered)

  • @the_petit_place

I do not have the exact dimensions but, they were approximately 4 feet wide, 7 feet tall, and 10 inches deep. Your local Tractor Supply or retailer may be able to provide you with more accurate measurements of the shipping boxes. We paid Tractor Supply an additional delivery fee because the boxes were too long to fit in our Jeep so we could not pick them up from the store.
