Welcome to the new walk round video, where Jonny Smith gets the inside look on design and spec of Polestar's latest 380-mile range car. Audi Avant etron (A6 variant) is meant to be coming later this year…. And supposedlt has a range of close to 600miles. Think we can expect it to be about 100k though if not more. VW is meant to be doing a similar size to the passat long roof as well.

I've never seen anyone with presbyopia (needs reading glasses) review rear view cameras. Anyone who uses varifocals for example can see in car mirrors because the object they're focusing on is not the mirror glass but with a camera and screen their focus is on the screen itself. This can easily cause many problems, especially when combining varifocals with the interior mirror because the reading segment of varifocal glasses is at the bottom of the lens which obviously means it can't help much to see a screen above your head. It at least needs a conversation... no?

And I dont necessarily like the move towards the windowless bullet where you are solely dependent of technology rather than analogue and physical interactions with the car and its environment. I do appreciate the wish to differentiate, as it can lead to awesome design solutions but in interacting with traffic, the main responsibility in a car, this windowless back lid doesn’t add anything as single solution. I appreciate the fresh and minimal design, but all I see is how expensive repairs would be for this thing. So many LED's inside the car, all of those cameras which will surely fail at some point - and given these electronic dependent cars I wouldn't be surprised if the car won't allow you to drive it with a broken camera for 'safety' purposes. I see more excessive luxury than I see practicality - which I find is at odds with a minimalist design.

Much harder with this design and the electronic tools won't alert the driver, because the car will be turned off at that point.

Heck, even if the camera gets dirty you're going to struggle. Also, how well does it handle glare from the sun? You can bang on about 360 view all you like, but we already have that, in the form of very simple, easy to replace tech called........windows. Removing the rear window and replacing it with a camera and a screen, especially in an electric vehicle, has to be one of the biggest "fixing a problem that doesn't exist" things since they tried to get rid of side mirrors the same way... Sorry Max, but complexity for the sake of complexity is largely why modern cars suck... I like Polestar a lot, but this is just an absolute fail.

And for a cars that size, the cargo capacity still vastly underperforms sportswagons and the less pretty Model Y. Yes, Tesla was lazy and could have put 100 kWh in that one to get similar range to Polestar 4 and Porsche Macan EV, but their clients can live with the specs, and get a big cargo space figure, whether that's real or not, practical or not, premium or not. It sells. It'd lke this trick on a proper wagon and get to stuff it without trying to get view out the inside mirror. It's a near trick, but it's more a Lambo wound patch for the bleeding than a Polestar's most valuable differentiators. Is the view better with the cam, until it get dirty? I'm sure it is.

Great video. Current Polestar2 LRDM owner here, and this is square in my sights as a next car. Overall, I think I'd like it - but I do have some reservations about a camera instead of a mirror, given how bad the rear view camera on the PS2 is once there's a mist of dirty road water and tree sap misted on the lens. Also you can keep the autonomous driving, I'd be un-checking that option! Oh and the labelling of all the parts with their eco-credentials looks ridiculous too ... stop that please Polestar, makes me look really self-righteous as the owner.

To be fair though, the rear camera on the P2 is for reversing only and not a "rear view" camera as such, plus, it is situated just above the registration plate, so is bound to get mucky. The HD rear view camera on the 4 is roof mounted and has an overhung cover, I would expect they have run multiple tests this position in all weather types to ensure it remains clean and clear and meets all regulations. I am also a Polestar 2 driver , Launch Edition DM PP and looking as the Polestar 4 DM as my next car, no question.

Pretty disappointed by this- BRILLIANT video again from Jonny! I'm beginning to see why people are turning away from BEV. The tech isn't advancing quickly enough, charge times, battery range etc hasn't improved much in the last 5 years. In the meantime prices are going up, charging costs are going up and manufacturers seem obsessed with selling us cars we don't want or need. Who wants an SUV/coupe?! It looks MASSIVE and yet the boot is useless, my measure for a practical boot is a Volvo 240- can you fit a washing machine sized box in the boot? Nope, then its not a family vehicle. Everything about it looks enormous and yet the place where EVs make any sense at all is in 'urban areas' and yet, thats the very same place where space on the road is at a premium. I really wish a manufacturer would think about how cars are used in the real world, what the real world looks like and make something thats fit for that purpose, rather than trying to create a futurist, blade runner esq aesthetic that is neither practical nor appealing.
