    Jeff, with the ultimate no till. I ran into problems broadcasting into the buckweat. By the time i got the seed laid out it was getting pretty late. I was spraying in the dark. I was unsure if i hit everything so i re applied again the next day late towards dusk again. Am i still ok or is it possible thing could have started germinating in that time. Thanks for the latest and greatest how to video. I have about an acre left to plant in the U.P. sprayed twice so far. bottom land more or less. Good topsoil im not going to lose if i plow or disk due to erosion. floods in the spring. I will plant half in oats-peas and layered rye no till hand broadcast and the other half disked prior to planting with same about labor day. Will see what one works the best. You will not make any friend with Kubota, John Deere or Kiyote compact tractor dealers for DIY food plotters since they will no longer need tractors to plow, disk or rotovate. The one question i have still is with clover plots being changed to brassicas or cereal blends. Do i need to rotovate living clover in for the "green manure effect" or can i spray these just prior to planting also for the added N?

    If you have anything that will pull a small disc harrow and a brushhog I find it cheaper and faster than chemicals. I start a new plot in the fall by brushhogging as short as possible. In the spring I add needed lime and disc harrow the top 4" to uncover roots. I hope that ragweed and amaranth will take over because they are a natural cover crops that protects from erosion, shades out other plants, holds moisture, and builds soils. About August 1st I brushhog the ragweed-amaranth, add fertilizer and disc the top 2". The ragweed and amaranth will not come back after August 1st. I add my seed and like to pack it down for best germination. I find this takes less time and far less cost.basically weed free but lack of rain can affect everything.

  • @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751

    Unfortunately far more coat and time with your process, and less weed control. I average about 1.5 hours per acre for total spray and planting time. Also much, much cheaper as $80 of chemical literally kills 5 acres. And much cheaper because not only do I not have to own a brush hog or tiller or disc...but the tractor to use it with. Trust me I have gone the tractor route with putting over 500 hours on my old Kubota. That was when I thought I needed a tractor and didn't know any better. By not using my tractor I cut my overall time to 1/3rd per acre and didn't need the 35k in equipment. That's a lot of chemical! I also took control of any weed problems to a much higher level.

    We really had to force ourselves to use it. I like frost seeding switch better and it is faster. The tiny seeds are easier and faster broadcast and overall it is much faster to just broadcast and just as effective. I actually like the more even distribution of seed too...like with the buckwheat. This year part of my buckwheat was drilled and I like the broadcasted portions better. Overall faster, cheaper, no heavy equipment needed and just as effective or more depending on what is being planted. Great machine but not for me and how I like to plant...also don't need to burn up a side by side (we burned up two transmissions) or buy a tractor to use it 😊

    I envy how accessible chemicals are in the USA, in Canada most chemicals are banned for non-agricultural uses and banned for non-licensed purchases, even small-scale farmers are finding it harder and harder to obtain them.

    Hey Jeff, what’s your opinion on mixing rye And winter wheat ?

  • @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751

    @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751

    2 жыл бұрын

    Not a bad idea...but typically 1 is better than the other for your soil type and seed availability. Wheat...heavier, better soil...Rye is for any soil. Rye has a more powerful growth pattern...twice as high as wheat when mature, for example. Wheat is slightly more preferred? Both germinate very well. Have definitely mixed them before and I could tell no difference in use.

    Hi Jeff, you say food plotters make bad farmers and farmers make bad food plotters. One thing I don’t get is why can’t the farmer apply the same practice/ he uses on his ag fields to a small one acre plot and get as good or better result than no till? How is it different? I am not a farmer and I appreciate your tips as your no till method is how I made my first winter Rye plot last year, but I think I’m Missing something.

    Hi John! It's the overall strategy AND various food plot combinations they have never planted. Layering methods. Seasonal timing.. Irregular shapes. The scale of food plotting, appropriate equipment. I know for a fact there are farmers that are great food plotters...but it is an entirely different ball game. Most of the time when there are farmers who plant client food plots, they have to be instructed exactly how, when and what to plant. Big equipment doesn't translate into a good food plotter, in fact...it is usually the opposite. Many times you can't use big equipment in food plots...about 1/2 of my personal 18 acres of plots but equipment isn't an option due to rocks, access, size of plots, erosion concern...to name a few.

    Hi Jeff, what do you recommend for pound per acre if I was to use tillage radish rape and turnip?

  • @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751

    @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi Tanner...I recommend the Northwoods Whitetails blend. You can't use more than a pound of purple top...I wouldn't use dwarf Essex rape if I can help it and each is a different pound per acre. For example purple top is 3#s per acre. Rape is 5#s per acre, forage turnip is 6-8#s per acre and radish is 15#s per acre broadcasted. You have to pick the seeds you want to use, then figure the pounds per acre of each seed and then add appropriately so you combine the various pounds per acre into a full acre of seed. I hope that helps a little? With cheap shipping and s quality blend already calculated and at a fair price, it is hard to beat buying a quality blend already assembled for you.
