New Method! Air Layering Propagation with Water
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Air layering propagation is one of the most popular ways to get identical characteristic of the plant with the original one. There are many growth media that can be used on the air layering propagation process such as potting soil, sphagnum moss, peat moss, cocopeat, rockwool, and so on. But on this video we would not utilize those growth media. We try something new that maybe nobody has ever think about this to be applied on air layering propagation. We use water instead of using those common growth media.
The process are really simple and similar to the one that use other growth medium. What we do here is changing the growth medium with water. We use plastic cups as the water container. We applied the air layering propagation on water apple/ wax apple/ rose apple fruit tree. For the detail of the air layering propagation process using water just watch the video.

For climates with a cold winter, use the water method until roots form, when roots are established fill the cup with soil and make drainage holes, let roots grow into soil, after another month or so cut the branch from the tree then repot into a container and take inside for the winter until next spring. Air layering doesn't work well with apples and pears, but this method will work better. Thanks

Really good idea. I think 2 slight drawbacks, but not too bad, is those water logged roots will be more delicate to transplant vs. roots generated in a wrapped method with damp media. The cup seems questionable, too many chances for something to knock it around and it loses water.
@EasyGardening
4 жыл бұрын
Regular method of air layering with wrapped growth medium will be easier to transfer to soil off course. Yes it's very risky, so we need to care them
@beckiel3211
2 жыл бұрын
I tried this method before but u are right that the roots are more delicate. I successfully managed to grow roots but upon transferring, the roots all breaks so gone were my hard work and waiting for 3 months. Since then, I am not keen any more to try this method

Nice demo for a great idea. I'm going to try this on my thornless blackberries and raspberries next year and I'll let you know how it goes. I'd like to try it on my apple trees but less confident it would work without opening them up to pests or disease. What do you think? Do you think it could introduce fungus, p-ests, or disease?
@EasyGardening
4 жыл бұрын
It depends on our environment and treatment. If there are potential fungus etc in your area the risk will be higher. But with the right treatment it can be reduced
Very Nice Video I will use this method next week Thanks for sharing

Do you just cut the branch after that and plant it? Thank you for a great informative video.
@EasyGardening
4 жыл бұрын
Yes that's absolutely right. Just like ordinary method
Good idea to cut bushes and trees along this method. Perhaps it is another idea to speed up the rooting process by interrupting the bark around the trunk under the water reservoir. The return sap flows from the cuttings cannot then continue to the roots of the mother plant. The glucose-rich sap streams after photosynthesis in the leaves flow under the bark to feed the newly formed plant roots. The water juice flow from the roots through the wood vessels of the mother plant nourish the leaves of the cutting, until the cutting itself develops sufficient new root growth. I experiment for hobby with various cutting methods.

I am very impressed with the results. Does that mean we do not need rooting hormone for air layering?

Yes it does. Rooting hormone is no needed for most plants since they will grow new roots easily. Maybe it's needed in certain areas that the weather is extreme.

Nice video! I was wondering though, where do you cut it after it has rooted well enough? At the starting point of the knife cut? So where you put the knife against the stem and start hammering? Or higher up where the cut ends? Or doesn't matter?

We should cut it under the starting point of the cut since there are many roots from the starting point to the end when they are ready to transfer

Do we need to change the water from time to time or just add water
@EasyGardening
4 жыл бұрын
It's better to change the water once or twice a week to make it fresh and get healthy roots
They become open roots. Direct contact with air when transfer to the soil. So it may not be issue for sub tropical or tropical climates but what about 4 seasons regions? The best tree planting time is when it is in dormancy. Which is February March or April. So how to apply this for cold climates.. is a question. So I will answer that, which is a thought. When it starts rooting, fill the cup gradually with soil.. and to the end full soil.. while keeping always moist. Then maybe without disturbing roots with air, can be transferred to soil.???
@EasyGardening
4 жыл бұрын
Direct contact with air for short period is not a problem actually. Yes it's better if we change the water with soil or other growth medium like cocopeat to make it easier to transfer to garden or any container where we want to plant it. Thank you for your sharing and visiting

Interesting, but is this method better than the usual method? Two possible disadvantages may be: the number of roots made, (fewer) and secondly planting the new roots from water to soil.
@EasyGardening
4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely true. We don't say that this method is better than the usual. We're just trying to prove that this method works. Yes, roots grow better in usual method with soil or any other growth medium. About moving it, yes you're right. We need to be very careful in planting it to soil to keep the roots.
