I love my Honda Shadow. It’s cool to buy a bike that is essentially very unchanged (except for that rear disk) for a good 20 years or so. Such well built and well loved bikes

I ride HD now, but I put 40k miles on a Shadow when I was younger and don't regret it a bit. I would even say that people shouldn't shy away from the 750 Shadow as a first or second bike (with crash bars, of course). They aren't heavy, and the engine doesn't make a dangerous amount of power for a new rider. I suggest it because I foresee people getting bored with a 300 or 500 Rebel after they get some experience, but the 750 Shadow will keep you interested for quite a long time.

I love the green, and like others, agree that they need to update certain things (LEDs, bigger motor, etc.). And for God's sake...ABS should be standard on all bikes these days. Great review, Kevin; thanks for making the time to share your unvarnished guidance.

I'd love to hear their reasoning behind why ABS isn't an option on this bike when it's brother, the Aero has it. None of the reps know so it'd have to come from someone pretty high up, maybe one day I can have a pow wow with someone and get some answers to the million different questions I have that I haven't been able to get answers to over the years, even while I was working "with" Honda. Thanks for the kind words and support Peter, I really appreciate it...

@@HondaProKevin the Shadow Aero uses disk brakes. The Phantom's rear brake is 100% mechanical, which in a way is good, since your rear brakes will never fail due to a leak, but I think it makes it impossible to add ABS without changing the design. They would need to go disc brakes.

I would think, strictly from a business perspective, that going to "All ABS, All The Time" would be a no-brainer for Honda. There is definitely a cost associated with any option(s) offered by a manufacturer. Maintaining two of just about everything for certain models related to the braking system (design specs & documents, drawings, parts, manufacturing build documents & processes, etc.) almost certainly drives the price up to the point that they could put ABS on all of their bikes and actually save money across their entire lineup of bikes. And having ABS as the only option is very unlikely to cause more than a handful of potential owners to decide against any of Honda's bikes based solely on that feature. Also, Honda would kind of be doing their civic duty by gently nudging their customers (especially less experienced riders) to a safer braking technology as well.

Seriously, thank you... Oh yeah, that's very true! It definitely opens up the door for an interesting route to customize it and really make it your own. lol I hear ya, you have to make a little racket as that always make riding more fun. It's funny how we're wired that way, making noise always = more fun! You know, I think having the tank and fenders match would possibly make it look 100x better! It just looks out of place with all of the black and then bam, let's slap an oddly colored green tank right in the middle lol! I hope someone color matches the fenders to the tank soon, I'd love to see the outcome. Sometimes it baffles me why Honda doesn't choose to match certain parts. Example, the 2022 Grom SP having a black front fender makes no sense to me! I know I've said thank you enough times to be annoying by now but thank you again for the support, I really appreciate it...

I have the 2018 I got one year and 1100mi old. I am a middle aged average sized male with 35 yes 35 years of different motorcycle experience. I can tell you this about the Shadow phantom. 1) plenty of power for two up (210# + 135#) on surface streets and highway cruising at 60-65. Albeit at those speeds two up there is nothing in reserve to power out of a situation.. ride accordingly. 2) maintenance is a breeze. Seriously change the oil/filter, spark plugs and air filter and gear box and tire pressures,at intervals. My other bikes require all that plus chain and sprocket adjustments and replacement. Carburetor tuning, fork tuning(since it’s adjustable why not make it good) 3) engine is proven reliable over miles and miles 4) liquid cooled for bumper to bumper commute that you “can’t” lane split 5)great looks 6)low seat height for those that need it and low slung for those who like style 7)low insurance cost even full coverage 8) amazing fuel mileage 9)can easily add rack and factory saddlebags that just finish off the look and are durable. *not waterproof though 10) the sound not a Harley of course but seriously sounds pretty perfect if you remove the baffles. Not deafing but just right to make you feel like you are cool 😎

I have owned HD’s for the past 40 years and presently have an ABS Sportster in my stable. I do think you hit the nail on the head when you mentioned maintenance. There is a lot more maintenance (expense) to owning an HD than a Honda, especially if you do not do the work yourself. Quite frankly, this Phantom or the Aero are not inferior to an Evo Sportster at all and forget the new ones (unless you like hardtails and want back problems). Cruisers to me are boring, but sometimes I feel like boring. The Shadows for me just look right for a cruiser and they are proven. If I were in the market for a new midsize cruiser I would go for the blue Aero ABS (for an extra 200 bucks over the Phantom). You better wear good earplugs with that loud pipes save lives split pea soup Phantom or you’ll end up with tinnitus like me.

I've owned an Evo Sporty and a 750 Shadow. ('98 ACE on the Shadow, '09 EFi rubber-mounted on the Sportster.) I don't feel as though I spent more time wrenching on the Harley than on the Honda. The frequency of the maintenance sessions are the same if you follow the service manual like gospel and maintain the bike as instructed, but maintenance was always quicker and easier on the Harley and there was less to do. Though cost is higher on the Harley if you don't wrench it yourself. But I still suggest the Shadow to my friends who want a bigger bike than their first without breaking the bank. I can't in good conscious advice someone to spend Harley money if I know that they ride less than 10k miles annually. Unless you are on it every day, why go top tier with a Harley, Triumph, BMW whatever?

@@harrisodell8081 hahah I loved "ask me how I know". Luckily I haven't had any of those moments. I guess the closest I've come to those 'Harley moments' is with the used Sporty that I started on when I switched brands. 10 year old Sporty with on 3k miles, so fuel just sat in its tank most of its life. The little plastic pre-filter into the pump (the 'sock') had deteriorated. The Harley Harley dealership told me that the fuel pump had no serviceable parts and I must buy a new one. I just went online and bought a 3 pack of socks for $12. Some of the things you mentioned are a tradeoff. The little belt tension guage is cheaper than buying chains over time (my Shadow was chain drive). I've had shaft bikes and never liked them because swapping gear ratios is nearly impossible and there's a noticeable difference in swingarm movement due to the weight. Shafts are spot on perfect for some people. When my Softail gets to old age and I'm more at risk of 'Harley moments', I'll go to an independent shop like I did when I had a Honda problem that was over my head. There's only a crazy difference in parts price if a rider insists on Screamin' Eagle parts. I'm cool with S&S or Dennis Kirk parts.

@@johnraconteur1723 IMHO the Evo Sportster is the best Harley ever made and I’ve owned a few, my first Sporty was a ‘well used’ ’62 XL Ironhead (I pushed that bike many miles) and I’ve owned more than a few big twins. I have been in many conversations where people seem to brag about how much money they have spent on their ‘Big Twins’ on repairs, most well into the thousands. Every new HD I have owned has had multiple warranty issues, which dealing with HD is a PITA. My first street bike was a ‘well used’ ’65 Honda 305 Dream, kinda funky looking but the thing never left me stranded. I have owned three new Honda motorcycles, a VFR, CB500F and the best bike I have ever owned, a CB500X, and no warranty issues. The Evo Sporty is tough, forgiving and comfortable. It is the best and the last. The new Sportsters’ (unless you enjoy self- flagellation) are going to be a very hard ride and knowing HD’s prior performance on R&D the first years are going to be trouble. Hello! I love this bike but, as a beginning rider, I have decided that an ABS braking system is an absolute "must-have" for me (the IIHS has stated that your chances of being killed or seriously injured are roughly 1/3 lower if you are riding a bike equipped with ABS!). So, as much as I would like to purchase this bike I can't until Honda decides to give it a braking system upgrade. My question for you, then, is have you heard any rumors or been privy to any insider info that would lead you to believe that Honda has plans to add ABS to the Shadow Phantom any time soon? Thanks for the vid... Harry Jones

Oh yeah, it's definitely a "to each their own" when it comes to pipes like this etc. They are definitely LOUD! Personally, I don't think I could handle riding more than 10 minutes with them before my ears would start bleeding lol but we're all different and that's what makes this hobby fun as everyone likes to make theirs a little different from the next.

I asked Honda what kind of after market exhausts they know of and they said it was too new, so then asked Vance and Hines and they said they weren't going to be making any for this model and year. I know the bike hasn't changed at all so can i just throw some of the older years aftermarket exhausts on there?

  • @HondaProKevin

    @HondaProKevin

    2 жыл бұрын

Great question! Sorry for the delay, it's hard to keep up with the thousands of comments and emails these days across all platforms. It depends on how you look at it. Technically, a beginner could hop on just about anything (within reason) and be just fine. The lighter the bike and the less horsepower can definitely make it easier for you to learn the fundamentals though so you don't get in "trouble" as quickly. The Rebel is lighter which is a bonus compared to the Shadow Phantom but it also makes almost twice the horsepower so it could get away from you quickly if you're not extremely careful. Either option, would be a great beginner cruiser and I would probably lean towards the Rebel if you have a level head on your shoulders and can take it easy on the throttle for a while. It has more electronics to make it safer and you'll have more growing room too at the end of the day. It all depends on the person though, if you're an 18 year old kid with no self-control then I 100% would not recommend hopping on that 1100 lol ;)

HondaPro Kevin Thanks a lot Kevin. No sorry as your reply is prompt. I am much older than 18 hahaha... I saw an Iron 883 today at the back door of my home. It was good. My choice is amongst those within 1000cc and I think 883 and Rebel 1100 are my favourites. I am interested in Shadow because of its V-twin engine looking alike of other cruisers. And I am happy with Rebel because all factors you named. However, Rebel doesn’t have a V-twin engine that I must trade off amongst likes against this unlike. Anyway, thanks for your advices which are precious.

Add ABS brakes, LED lighting, turn-by-turn GPS, a 5+ gallon tank, and tubeless tires (with spoked rims). This could be a good solo tourer (with a quick-release windshield and some tasteful luggage). And, I'd certainly pay a little more for the upgrades that I cited. Thanks for the great video!

@Keith C I truly think that most vehicles are made in a manner that is efficient for the manufacturer. Meaning, they are heavier because the bikes are easier to produce at a lower input cost to the producer. With motivation, I think they could shave weight here and there or use lighter weight (albeit more expensive) materials as well. I'd pay a bit more for this. Many bikes are significantly overweight for what they are (and the output of their engines). They CAN do this, but it takes effort. Look at what Honda did with the CB300R, it weighs only 317 lbs. Excellent work. I'd like to see more of it.

If they were to update it to 2022 - how about updating the instruments with a fuelguage, and tach? Maybe change that tiny LCD to a better TFT for the other info? LED lights.
