“People can’t imagine a father doing this with his son.” Indeed. I’d even add that people also can’t imagine what it’s like to be raised in a home that enabled such a thing. This wasn’t just a sexual abuse case, it was a mental abuse case carried by a father that literally everyone that came into contact with was terrified of. The mother enabled it. From experience, not only does the SA mess with your mind, the fact that the Mom allowed it might be the hardest part to get over. It shifts your understanding of reality, love, and trust.

A lot of people believed them at the time, and a lot of people still do. The first trial resulted in a mistrial because the jurors could not agree to convict or to acquit. During the second trial, the judge limited the evidence that the defense could admit, which allowed the state to minimize the allegations of abuse, and they were ultimately successfully convicted. Many people were shocked by this, as their testimonies of abuse were captivating and moving.

The PTSD that exists from being constantly in fear for your life makes you a paranoid, hypersensitive, adult that has trouble trusting people and forming close bonds with other people, among other things like nightmares, panic attacks, being quick to label people with only good intentions as phonies, etc. People who've never experienced this can have a hard time understanding that this kind of abuse does not end when the victim leaves the relationship or is in a position to do something even when the physical abuse isn't happening.

To those who are pointing out that the brothers were of legal age to move out of the home: any type of abuse includes a type of mind control where the abuser convinces the victim they would never survive without them. If these brothers were abused from a young age to their legal adulthood, it absolutely makes sense to me why they’d still be in the home with great reluctance to leave. It’s the same concept of saying, “why don’t they just leave?” regarding an abused spouse. I am all for a second trial, or release based on time served.

Anyone in their right mind knows that if you murder someone for whatever reason besides self defense, you're found guilty in a court of law, it's life in prison. You don't get off for time served or the circumstances of abuse. It's like putting guns and knives in the hands of victims and its ok if you brutally murder them? It's not ok. You contact authorities, your family members, adult friends, clergy, your Dr, your neighbor, anyone who would listen. The back story to the brothers behavior prior to the murders is telling. They should serve out their sentences for what they were found guilty in the court of law for, the same as anyone else who chose to weapon up and blow away an abuser. Regardless of "the times", it's immoral and illegal to take someone else's life if not defending your own.

People might wonder why the boys didn't just leave home and go on their own, but it's not that simple. I lived with my parents until I was 24 because they used controlling tactics to keep me there. Whenever I expressed interest in leaving, my father would say, "Your poor mother! She'll be heartbroken!" which immediately caused me to feel like a selfish son, and my mother would say, "Don't you love me anymore?" or similar comments. My mother was a stay at home mother and homemaker and her kids were ALL she had. My father knew that, and would always resort to tactics to keep my brother, sister and I at home as much as possible to keep my mother company. Finally, I had enough guts at 24 to make a life for myself.

A father as a bully, and an abuser, has a devastating effect on young people. No question. It is horrendous. Give the time the Mendendez brothers have served for this crime, the case needs to be urgently revisited.

This is so tragic. The family member that withheld the lettet all these years is so ignorant. How could they not present that as soon as they discovered it? Hopefully, the brothers will receive some sort of reasonable restitution. Complete failure of the justice system.

@Joan Arc It is beyond soul-crushing to think that after years of being abused and being pushed to unimaginable lengths to save yourself, the _victims_ of the abuse would end up incarcerated. I hope something can be done for them even though justice will never truly be served at this point. Considering many of the high-profile cases in the 90s and early 00s, it is fascinating to see how much influence the court of public opinion had in a pre-social media world.

I was thinking about this case every once in a while, over these past many years. I couldn't help but think that any parents who are severely abusing a child never know when there time is up so to speak. And then something this terrible happens. A long time ago I read in the Bible where it said something to this affect; Parents, Do Not Provoke Your Children. It stood out to me for whatever reason. Parents need to be wise and especially avoid any form of abuse.

They murdered their mother also...that is inexcusable. Regardless of what may be truth about their father, they still stand guilty of brutally taking their mother’s life which goes more towards the fact they wanted the inheritance and they started spending it like banshees not abused victims.

If this murder happened now, so way those boys would have gotten a life sentence. Gypsy Rose has now been released, she served like what, 7 years? And that was medical/physical abuse. It would be absolutely CRAZY if these men never get a re-trial or their sentence overturned.

Had to think about her too. It's utterly unfair how Lyle & Erik were treated by the court and the general public (remember the nauseating Saturday Night Live sketch?) in the 90's. Terrible things happen when the wrong people become judges.

I was under the impression that they were convicted by the killing of their parents after the court blocked any attempt by the defense of using the sexual abuse as evidence since the trial wasn't about the sexual abuse but the murders of the parents.

They need to be set free. Or at the very least a retrial. They were painted as spoiled brats wanting their parent's money to go out and party, in the media and in the courtroom. In reality, they lived in a home we'd all call hell. What those boys went through can only be summed up as torture. I don't think they got a fair trial whatsoever.

I was undecided then but convinced now. They lost so many years in jail after being abused by their father while their mother did nothing. Their mother had to know. I know someone who was molested by his father and his mother did nothing. He just killed himself at the age of 35 this March. If in fact, their parents did this to them, let them go.
