New Engine for the Jeep YJ | Was this a bad idea?

#jeepyj #jeeplife #Jeep
I decided to replace the engine in my Jeep. With the help of my bothers, we tried to tackle this job over a weekend. Turns out, it didn't go as we planned...

You have a nice sorted jeep now to enjoy. A word to the wise if you decide to go any larger on the tires you will need to re-gear . Go easy on that Dana 35 rear end and at the first sign of trouble it is easy to put a Ford 8.8 rear end from a 90's Explorer, you can find them with 4.10 gears, posi and disc brakes.

    I couldn’t bleed the clutch master cylinder by pressing on pedal and hand bleeding underneath. Tried many times. Note: I have a MITYVAC Silverline Elite Automotive Kit MV8500 bleeding kit. Still wouldn’t bleed. I installed a new clutch master cylinder for auto zone and couldn’t get it bleed the air out. I took it back thinking it was defective. Auto Zone didn’t have another one to give me, so they refunded me the money. I went to O’Relly Auto Parts and bought one. Again, I couldn’t get it to bleed. I looked online for a solution, and an old time Jeepster post said to fill reservoir and leave it overnight to gravity feed the air out. And behold that work??? I had to fill clutch master cylinder with clutch fluid and leave overnight to (gravity feed). Next day the clutch pressure was great??? It will self bleed. I just watched the fluid level.

  • @SimplyMustGo

    @SimplyMustGo

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yeah, in my case the master cylinder was old and apparently blew when we were trying to bleed it. I can actually recall the exact moment when we let the fluid dip to low and it took a huge shot of air. After that we had nothing until we replaced the master cylinder - We found bits of o-ring when we replaced it.

    @@SimplyMustGo MOrning Matt: is the slave cylinder inside of the bellhousing or external on the side of the bellhousing?Either way the bleed will be external. If external you have the AX15 transmission(desirable) If internal you have the BA10/5 transmission (not so desirable).If you have the BA10/5 it's still OK. Just don't go crazy when driving off road trying to go through places you should be winching through. Ba10/5's are a little weak for that type of off roading. The 2.5"s are OK engines. 4.2 inline 6 is much better. DO NOT do a lift on the the Jeep and put on 33's or larger tires. Looks goofy,raises the center of gravity and roll over risk,and puts terrible strain on the drive train to the point of trashing it.Dealing with the carnage from 33's on Jeep #15 as we speak.

    To those of you wanting to change from 4 cylinder to 4.0 cylinder, you will have to relocate engine mounts, no big deal if you can weld. Figure on changing bell housing, flywheel, clutch assembly, starter. Look for ax15 granny if you want manual. You will need new ECM and wire harness for a six. There are good engine remanufacturers, Google for remand. Motors or someone from maybe Quadratec. If you can do the work yourself, buy the parts and do it, save labor money. If you can't, get the best remanufactured you can afford. Golan has 4.0s with good guarantees, the closer to home, the less you will pay for shipping. One thing you need to remember, DON'T BUY CHEAP, the last thing you want to do is replace it again a year from now. Via are nice, but if you live in Calif. you have to pass all the regulations to be street legal. Same with putting a 6 in in place of 4 cylinder. ( CAL SUX, I KNOW, I LIVE IN CAL ) . If you can swing it, time to do new exhaust. This should be enough to get you started. Just remember what JEEP stands for. JUST EMPTY EVERY POCKET! oh yeah, if you put in an auto, you may need to get an automatic bell housing to match tyranny. In western states a lot of us use Advanced adapters for adapter plates and such .
