    Hi Roy, it's good to hear a real-world review of a product we all need. I used to be a little dismissive of other photographers talking about download speeds until I started shooting some sports work. Arriving home, late, after a long day on my feet, those files can seem to take forever! I'm enjoying that channel.

    I know what you mean! When it’s getting late all you want is the “all files transferred” message! Try building in the cup of tea or glass of wine approach to your workflow

    Great video Roy? I’m no pro just a keen photographer but recently I notice a few things which you (or others) might wish to pursue. 1) product photography is on the up I understand where clients can send items to you 2) lightroom presets are now more popular than ever, so one can sell them. 3) Subscription type content for premium members 4) affiliate link store fronts to see your branded T-shirts etc

    Hi Roy, glad you are well and companies are noticing your channel. Also really hoping this new variant of COVID (which did not come from South Africa, but was only discovered and reported in SA) does not negatively affect you any more. Damn, I,d buy that card reader just to see you make good on your promise. No for a big question, do you think you will move over to mirror less system, will the new system be beneficial to the photography you usually do. Seems like the second hand prices of DSLR cameras is dropping fast, especially the high end cameras. Stay safe over there.

  • @RoyRiley

    @RoyRiley

    2 жыл бұрын

    Cheers Conrad! Really appreciate your comment. I think mirrorless is rather inevitable as that is where all the research and development seems to be going. However I hope there is always a place for DSLR cameras. My main reason for changing would be much improved AF and the amazing video options rather than image quality. Still not 100% convinced though.. If I had more money I would have already changed! Yup the covid situation is miserable and I hate the blame games and division going on.. Not good for anyone. Thanks again man and I hope the world treats you and your family well. RR

    Is it a rite of passage in pro' photography to be on a job and your card reader suddenly stops working...?! Never at home, that leisurely sit down to download, with coffee and biscuits. Oh no, in the car, on a deadline, card reader says no... Hmm. And crazy that those overpriced (imho)£80 CFExpress card readers don't also have an SD read slot, because hey manufacturers, don't you realise the cameras have 2 card format slots?! So always have an £18 multi-card reader in the bag too. Thanks for your pro' use review of this Driver Genius unit. I may be buying... I'm sure many many photographers will be with you on work and the pandemic year...oh my. Solidarity...

    Thanks Andrew! Gear always seems to find a way of breaking down during those “heat of the battle” on deadline moments. I have become a bit obsessed over the years with making sure I have back ups of everything or at least a secondary method of working if something goes tits up. One of my plans for this winter is to streamline everything into a more elegant solution. I seem to have ended up with so much old gear and so many cables and bags of nonsense! Hope you are getting enough work and keeping out of trouble. RR

Holy smoke the relief was like a golden wave of joy! Dental pain is horrible. Enjoy the steak! RR

    Good review. I’ll get one when my current reader packs up.. it’s Chinese tat so I’m sure it’ll eat one of my cards at some point. Slightly off script but would be interested in knowing what you do about histograms. Whether you bother ..? Some cameras let you dial right or left in live view to check exposure. As far as I know you can’t do that on a canon you have to take a photo first and then check .. So what’s your approach or is it all about post … keep it real mate…!!

  • @RoyRiley

    @RoyRiley

    2 жыл бұрын

    Cheers John! In my experience all card readers break or become unreliable over time. I have been through a boat load over the years and they all go wrong in the end! It hurts more when you buy a “pro” spec one for top money and then it goes wrong anyway.. histograms… you can get one on the canons before capture on the live view or after during preview. I am not a huge fan of the histogram these days. I tend to rely on instinct or using the preview screen mostly with a test exposure. However if lighting is tricky I will bring the histogram into play. Much more for highlights than shadows. I always shoot raw and so generally under expose if there is any question of smashing the highlights. Now that you have asked the question though I’m going to start thinking about the histogram on my next shoot and see how it goes!! Back in the Olden days of early digital we used to Rely on the histograms a bit more when they became available because the files were so easy to break if the exposure was slightly off. Very similar to shooting transparency film. Thanks for your comment, it’s given me something to think about! All the best. RR
