Adobe Photoshop 2022 Neural Filters / Colorize / Smart Portrait, Landscape Mixer. Skin Smoothing

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

So, Having been an Adobe Photoshop user for nearly three decades I decided to try out the Neural Filters in Adobe Photoshops new release version in 2022. Join me in this episode while I try out a few of the filters on some of my pictures. Specifically Colorize, Smart Portrait, Skin Smoothing and the beta version of Landscape Mixer. I discuss my views on AI imaging and it effect on photography. I take a few of my old black and white images show how to colorize them with the neural filter. I take a few portraits and adjust them using the smart portrait neural filter and smooth the skin using skin smoothing neural filter. Hope you enjoy the video and remember, thsi is just my opinion, everyone can make their own decisions about these things and ultimately they are all subjective anyway! There is no right or wrong.. All the very best and thanks for watching. Roy

Really interesting video Roy. The smart portrait feature can give hilarious results! But you raise a serious point in terms of processing an image that is faithful to the original scene or person etc...that we have photographed. I've come to the conclusion that we are creating art (at least in my job as a portrait photographer) - whether that is for ourselves or for clients - and so my approach to editing is to create an image that brings out the essence of what or who I have photographed, even if the details are slightly manipulated. That could be as simple as removing a distracting object or imperfection or boosting the contrast to give the image more impact, through to more significant edits. A monochrome image is, after all, not strictly an accurate record of a colourful scene. And of course particularly in portrait photography, I could take 2 photographs that would be identical but if I change the lighting on one of them they will look different even before I have pressed the shutter. I don't think there are any definitive answers, but isn't that another reason to love photography?! In terms of the neural filters themselves, some seem a bit gimmicky but the one I have used is the skin smoothing (for model and boudoir photography). It might not replace skin smoothing techniques such as frequency separation, but with careful use and adjusting opacity post-edit it can work well when you need a quick fix. Thanks for another interesting video! Martin

Very interesting video !!!! Like most other folk I didn't realise that these filters were in PS because I use LR mainly and when it comes to pictures of people I don't alter it at all. Interesting point about updates and software changing every 3 minutes. May I ask you a question, as a Professional, Do you really need updates all the time for your business ? Lastly, it seems to me that these photo software companies are doing it for the masses and not Professionals !!! Maybe I'm wrong. However I do find your content very interesting. Thank you.

That neural happy face of yours gave me a belly laugh. This was really funny. Earlier this year I canned photoshop and paid a one-time fee for Photoshop Elements. It's still more than I need but nicely scaled down. So I no longer worry if I should use a 20% mask of some kind on the top part of someone's ear.

I don't believe that Photoshop was made for photographers because if it was, way back in the beginning the filters would have been photo filter names and they were not. I think photographers adapted photoshop and had some influence on new updates but it was made for graphic artists. I remember when it first came out and I saw my first composite image, I said to myself, you will never be able to trust what you see in print again. And that statement has become more truer than I could have imagined back then. Back in the Film days, and for ref. I am 77 and I have been taking photos since I was 7 so I know a little, I learned not to take photos but to make photos in the camera and the only think we did in the darkroom was a little burning and dodging, and then later with a removal film back we could do double exposures in camera. Today these new so called photographers will have no clue what do to if you gave them a 4x5 and said go load some film. lol

Hi Roy, like you I rarely use PS and manage to get along pretty happily with LR. I didn't know these filters existed and to be honest, now that I do know, I wish I didn't! Your most important comment here is pointing out the fact that this route will lead to a mistrust of photography as a medium of truth and reality.

I don't like these filters either. I can see their use in a possible extreme experiment from some Fine Art Photographer, but I would also expect them to declare the apposite use of such features for their work. On a brighter note, what a remarkable achievement: they managed to make Margaret Thatcher smile! Interesting video as always Roy! :) P.s.: Your final message was stunning, should be shared across the entire photography community and more. Totally agree with your view.

Absolutely love the pictures from the first mullet to the picture of "Paddy Pantsdown" and his sidekicks... also, Thatcher looks a lot like emperor Palpatine (maybe it's just me). Maybe PS can use the AI for better selections, masking, and other "low-level things". Processing in the cloud might just mean that PS needs to use cloud architecture to process the picture in a timely fashion (that technology is welcome in my opinion).

All the 'neural' colourised images look exactly like hand tinted Victorian photos... But these Photoshop filters could be a handy starting point for editing? Or certainly having a laugh to take a break on a long editing session! I find the automated selection of sky, or subject, etc, really handy, and occasionally 'sky replacement' useful too. All this for just a tenner a month! But 'too easy' image manipulation is questionable... Btw, I thought 'all filters' turned you into a lookalike of The Edge from U2...!

Hi, so it looks as if you're not having much more luck with colorizing than I am. Have you written to Adobe about this. I'm about ready to scream because it does not work out well. Any help to improve colorize would be greatly appreciated. At this point, I don't care about all the other sliders, only the colorize. Am not happy at all and told Adobe how I felt. Any ideas on when they will step up to the plate and get it right? Thanks

@@annebrooks5940 apologies for the confusion. By “deep water” I mean it’s a very deep conversation.. lots of things to consider and sometimes tricky to get to grips with.. at least for me! I am not a huge fan of AI so In some ways I hope it does not ever get so good that it starts to become damaging to humanity..on the other hand I do wonder if it might end up actually being quite useful to humanity… sorry again for any confusion but it is a rather confusing subject! Totally banjaxed is a British way of saying “a bit wrecked” good luck with your photography though! And for your sake I hope Adobe does what you need them to very soon. All the best. R

I must say (only half way through) that the "Happiest Roy (max slider)" is so so funny !! plus your reaction to seeing it is also funny. However, These are okay for comedy effect (especially if doing this for yourself or friends / family) but I cannot see the point. I don't know if anyone has said Roy but I lost sound at the start of the landscapes (jumped back to portraits and sound was still there, sound back at 16.20). With the landscapes I am probably of the same opinion - Why ? If you are getting up for the sunrise very early or sunset and waiting for the light, colouring, weather to be what you want it to be and how the view actually is then this is false to the umpth level. Do not like it at all.

I don't know man. I totally understand that you, as a professional, pay for these services with honesty. But it is so convenient to just torrent these adobe products... I mean listen. I am a student. I am pretty sure I live out of less money for a full year in my country then you receive for a more expensive photoshoot (rent not included). The reason I brought this up is because I am interested in your thoughts on this, I mean on stealing the product.
