Excellent explanation of how you plan to use the fixed base on the table and the plunge base for depth work. I could see the plunge base being used as a standard base while keeping the fixed base under the table. I never thought of that until you mentioned it. How do you like it? Mine had minor scratches as well, and some of the adjustment knobs/indicators felt fragile and cheap. With that being said it produces very nice results. Overall, I’m well satisfied for the price.

It certainly has the feel of an injection molded design but like you said it produces great results. I’m satisfied with it as well, particularly given the price point.

I got one for Christmas and I love it I tried to bog it down using a molding bit cut full depth and didn't bog it down

The thing is a workhorse! The only time I’ve been worried about it is when I was working it hard and it was over 100°F in the shop. Metal of the body was quite toasty but still worked well and lives on!

Looks like a lot of stuff fits in the case too

I love your videos and subscribed. You noted that at some point now that your router and table are setup that you'd make a video showing how to use it properly. Making adjustments on height, etc. Is that in the works? I'd love to see it so I don't cause any damage to the wood or more importantly, me.

can you demonstrate making topside adjustments after it is mounted on table? Also, will the micro adjuster not work when it's fixed mounted? Sorry total newbie here and want to ensure I get the right setup

I think you'll be really impressed! I've loved this set.

You can purchase a no frills fixed base (no handles or plastic plate) designed to be permanently mounted in a router table. It is the same as the fixed base you have (less handles, etc.), but it lets you quickly use the fixed base without having to remove it from your table.

One issue that I ran into with this router is the depth adjustment while mounted on a router table. The e-clip that keeps the adjustment mechanism in place failed because of the weight of the motor. The resolution to this was to replace the e-clip with a thrust bearing and shaft collar.

Thanks for this. I really just needed to see how it all fits back in the case 😂! Learned a bunch though about what this combo does. But, I have a problem-I see you just pulling and easily twisting the motor to insert and remove it into the different bases. I can’t do that. (AndI do know about the fine adjustment lever). The motor is so tight in both. It’s the twisting part specifically. Any thoughts or ideas to get this working? As it is, I avoid using It.

Haha, no worries at all! Sometimes figuring out how to repack it is the challenge 😂 and weird! You’re not the first person I’ve heard with this problem. If the lever is unlocked and fully un-tensioned, I’m not sure why it’d be holding on so tightly. My only thought is to make sure it’s aligned and try twisting it as you insert because I have noticed the “quick adjust” button getting bound on it as I try to insert. If you can’t visualize what I mean, let me know and I can shoot you an email with some photos.

@@NorthwestCraftsman thanks for the reply. After a long struggle, i managed to get the motor out of the plunge base, then I had an aha moment and smeared wax on the motor and was able to get it into the stationary base. It was still a struggle, but at least I know that I can do it.

I was also going to suggest that! Only concern I have is it potentially coming loose during operation because of reduced friction. But, if you can’t use it anyways, it won’t come out 😂

Bought it. Hoping to 45 top and bottom my rough cut hemlock for the exterior of my sauna 🤷‍♂️

Buy the Bauer trimmer too. For sign making. U can get a Plate made for it. A guy on KZread sales them. That little trim router is the clone of the Makita. Same tool.

Not sure I remember all of the extra screws but if I’m remembering correctly the wooden handles need to be mounted and the black slides do as well.

I hope you can help me .I bought a Bosch 1617 router kit I and table .I am new to routers .I have 2 questions how do I set depth on the fixed base from 0 to the depth I would need to make a dado 3/4 not the plunge but the fixed also when I try to mount the router it does not seem to tighten securely to the table like the screws supplied are to short or am I doing something wrong

Mitch Portney thanks for your questions! Let’s see if we can’t get those figured out. 1. Welcome to the router club! It’s honestly one of the most versatile tools in the shop and I use it for everything. Once you get the hang of it, I think you’re going to love it. 2. When you’re talking about setting the depth on the fixed base, it all happens from that black dial you see. Whether mounted in the table, or being used outside the table, unlock the friction clamp and turn this knob. It should slowly lower or raise the entire spindle in the fixed base. If you don’t have enough room for adjustment, there is a spring loaded button near the friction clamp that allows you to move the spindle to three different positions. This should give you all the depth you need. Now, setting the depth. First, make sure your bit is installed. If your outside of the router table, lower the bit until you’re even with your surface. That’s zero. Then, with the router on the edge of a board so the bit can be lowered but at least half the base is supported, lower the bit until you reach 3/4”. You may find it useful to mark 3/4” on the board ahead of time so you are just going to the mark. However, if the base is installed in the table, zero it by using the depth gauge mentioned in our tongue and groove video (link to be posted in a second) and then set it to the depth you’re interested in. If you run out of headroom, do the same thing as if it was free and “quick adjust” it to another position. As a note, always make sure to unlock that friction lock when adjusting depth and re-lock it when you’re done. You can break the adjustment mechanism if it’s locked and it’s dangerous not to have it secured when it’s unlocked. 3. For mounting it to the router plate, have you removed the black, anti friction slider that they have on the bottom? It should just be the raw metal and then there should be 3 screws that work, they have a variety included. If this was too complicated via text, let me know and I’ll post a quick video on adjusting it.

How hard is it to get the motor out of the router table?

Super easy, they have a friction lock clamp that you can undo, slide the motor body up, rotate, and remove. Takes about 3 seconds.

Can this router use 1/4 and 1/2 shank bits? Or just 1/2?

If you’ve got the budget, I’d recommend the Freud multi-set, excellent quality and brand. I chose to get a cheaper set for two reasons. It allows me to determine which bits I use most frequently and then upgrade those individually, rather than purchasing a large set of nice bits and it has a low initial investment. @@NorthwestCraftsman that’s exactly why I’m on selling my ryobi router with the wrench and nothing else but the bag it came in. 🤣 I have the ryobi 1-1/2 peak router and want this exact one. Huge upgrade !!!

That's all fine and good telling basically what each base but it actually came across as you didn't really know how to take it apart and swap them out. For me I wanted to see you literally take the motor out not point to the lever and say oh this is what you use to remove it. All in all it was just a very vague box unopening. I may be wrong but it seems to me that a more experienced router user will already know which buttons and levers to push to remove the motor and that an unboxing like this is more for someone who is new to routing and would like to see the motor taken out. I know you can't go into huge details supposed to be brief but also enough detail to make someone understand by seeing the process done. It's kind of like if Aunt Mabel said hey there lad I want you to make an apple pie for Thanksgiving. Here are all the ingredients. Great thanks auntie Mabel but where are the directions. The chances of my cake coming out the same as hers or one in a thousand we all have the same ingredients but not the instructions. In the meantime I will look for a more instructional video.
