    Locals can get a CitiBike membership, then they're free to unlock, free for 45 minutes, and only $0.15 per minute over 45m. You can get a day pass as well, but not sure what the breakdown is for that. Also our trash is always body shaped. Just don't ask questions.

    I find 24 hour passes the way to go with Citi Bikes. If you take a citi bike for the day it is cheaper than buying metro passes every time, more fun, and you see a whole lot more of the city that way.

    If you happen to have some time in Manhattan, check out Randall's island! it's one of the only quiet places in NYC and a really nice place to ride your bike with an amazing view of the city.

    I was a bicycle messenger from 79'/82' Times Square. Way more chaotic back then. No bike lanes back then. You rode with the traffic in the middle avenues. My fav 6th and 5th ave also 2nd ave. If you caught what we called a "wave" which meant you didn't hit any lights for a long time, what was a rush it was especially going fast on a fixed gear! No brakes! I shot 20K specimens for the AMNH The Spectrum Of Life Exhibit Hall Of Biodiversity back in the late 90's before it was built. Freelance job. They only picked about 1,500 for wall. Fun times. Manhattan is fairly easy to get around. For the most part anything above 14th street goes east/west north/south. It gets a bit tricky going below 14th street to the Battery.

    @FrancisCade, the steam comes from underground boiler systems that are well over 120 plus years old and businesses and hotels refuse to spend the millions to update these systems. Certain sections of Manhattan all you see in the winter is chimney stacks of steam at street level. Brilliant content, love the vibes.

    I was told that the steam is from a network of pipes that come from a power station. These are then linked into buildings heating systems. Major breaks outside in the road end up with a chimney over them. Strange place America. 😉

    The locals using Citibike mostly have an annual membership, which works out to only $15/month. That also gives you 45 minutes before the additional charges kick in. For longer journeys, you can dock the bike after 44 minutes, and grab a new one to continue on your trip. A 24 hour day pass is also available for $15 and would make sense if you use it a few times during the day. The single ride is definitely the worst deal, and mostly for tourists who just fancy a bike ride and don't want to go rent a bike for the whole day.

    Couple of things I picked up on. To really witness organised chaos you need to visit India. Honestly, it’s mind blowing at first sight but you soon realise it just works. A horn and zero aggression gets you where you need to go. Not sure if fancy it on a bike though… It’s been a while since I was last in New York but damn it was expensive. So much so, I figured it’d be cheaper to buy a bus ticket, rent a tent and head to a music festival up state near Woodstock for a few days.

    Lime e-bikes in North Vancouver are $1.15 start and $0.35 /minute. These are great in North Vancouver cause we have quite a few hills to navigate. Make sure you make all the adjustments on the bike (ie seat height, get your helmet on, place your packages in the basket, etc.) before you login . The meter starts ticking as soon as you scan the QR code. These e-bikes are convenient, but pricey if your trip is over 15 minutes (approx $9). Thanks for the new bike day video.

    In many parts of Europe the public bike share system is -- public. That means it is a public service owned by the municipality that is not necessarily for profit making, but to improve transportation and reduce congestion, just like the bus and metro. In USA, many are run by private, for-profit companies like Lyft and that can explain why it costs more. NYC is also very expensive in terms of space and labor to move these bikes around when there are not enough of them in one location.

  • @stephendoherty8291

    @stephendoherty8291

    the original dublin bike scheme was funded via an agreement without outdoor poster company so that helped and like NYC its sponsored but its also funded by the local council as sponsorship does not cover the full cost. Seems expensive in NYC. Over a week or 2 it might be easier to rent a bike from a bike shop.

  • @bengt_axle

    @bengt_axle

    Жыл бұрын

    @@stephendoherty8291 that’s an interesting bit of information. These Citi bikes are actually the ones invented in Quebec for the city of Montreal. Initially, the city was a stakeholder (owner) but had to sell out at a very low price to a private company because it didn’t have the public mandate to operate such a service. It lost money for the first few years. But now it is closer to even and the company that bought the rights to the bike and docking system began exporting this all over North America, from San Francisco to NYC. They have now even developed e-bikes which live on the same system and are very popular. It still costs the city to maintain the system (through grants) but there’s now greater acceptance of it and more bikes are added each year. It really does take 10 years or a pandemic for people to change their habits.
