So, I picked her up Saturday. I'm only 200 miles in, but I'm very impressed with power and smooth shifting this engine and transmission package has. The suspension is softer than I'd expect while driving, it feels just as big as my brother's Ram 3500, but not the stiff ride. If the on board MPG is accurate it will be more efficient than our Honda 0dyessy and I'm not even kidding.
There have been VERY few trucks I can say I have been "greatly anticipating" But this one, , , , this is one of them!
Me and my wife as Chevy Legends got to drive this before the press. We had no idea that we would be driving the 3.0 Duramax. We drove the 1500 crew cab RST 4x4 and got 36 mpg. Very impressive! It was awesome meeting the Chevy team and talking about these amazing new trucks. Chevy was awesome allowing us to drive the 6.6 Duramax, 6.6 gas, and the 3.0 of course. We drove a lot of miles! I got to drive to Silver 6.6 Duramax ltz and it’s an amazing beast. Love the new look and the very well thought of features and innovations.

It is tough. The 6.2L is amazing but I’d have to at least drive this diesel first. If the aftermarket comes through that 3.0L could be a fun fuel economy engine for sure. Love me some 6.2L though. Up until this point the more powerful gas engines have been my choice. Most of these 3.0L diesels are slow.

Jay P don’t really know much about diesels, but I like the ideal of the inline 6 and improved fuel economy, not sure I do enough real truck stuff to even consider a diesel, been real happy with my tiny 2.7 ecoboost, reminds of a diesel when it comes to downlow grunt, I think Chevys new 2.7 4 cylinder gas engine is very similar. I think I heard Mr. Truck say something about 40 mpg in their loop, I think I could maybe get 25 if it was flat and I ran at 50 mph. I’ve found what they say is true all eco or all boost.
@JsGarage
5 жыл бұрын
Poppy Neese The small diesels in the half tons are actually for people that don’t need to push the capacity of the truck. The small diesels are mostly about good fuel economy while still having good torque. They are a good middle ground as they offer the absolute best mileage while having power levels that are better and more livable than basic n/a gas engines. Light duty diesels are perfect for truck owners that just use the bed or tow some SXS and ATV vehicles or a light camper while still getting very solid mileage. Yea ecoboost was just a bad naming that confuses people. Those engines are little powerhouses that are mostly criticized by the “eco” part of their name. I loved my ecoboost. Pulled like a mule.

Own a diesel powered vehicle and you’ll be disappointed when going back to gas power, low end torque effortless acceleration, no shifting back and forth... just saying
@JsGarage
5 жыл бұрын
Lagoon Rd You’re talking about a different vehicle. The diesel in the Silverado here will be shifting just as much as any gas engine with its 10 speed transmission. I think these little diesels are cool but having spent time in both a Ram ecodiesel and 3.0L powerstroke there wasn’t much that I liked about them. Making 240 and 250 HP they left a lot to be desired in the power department despite high torque numbers. A turbo ecoboost engine gives all that similar torque delivery but has quite a bit more pep thanks to more HP and gasoline response. The 6.2L is a powerful V8 from GM that really wouldn’t have the 3.0L duramax guys feeling left out. You’re talking same torque at a bit higher RPM but 143 more HP. Biggest thing you’ll miss is the mileage. HD trucks are a different story as they make more HP than the gas options for the most part and dramatically more torque, not similar. Also cost roughly 9-10K over the gas options too though.
I bought the LT last month and I love it. No complaints.
I picked up my 2022 RST Crew Cab 3.0 last Saturday. Basically 8 miles on the odometer when I picked it up with a full tank. Just over 200 miles on it and I'm at 3/4 tank still. Rides smooth. Torquey. Quiet. Has Z71 package on it. Comes also with heated seats and steering wheel but that's not hooked up yet - supply chain issues. I was always a Ram guy but this truck may easily convince me otherwise...
thanks man for this video, good job
Seems like a very sensible light-duty truck. 35 MPG ( WOW !!! )
So glad to see round wheel wells, but the tires still look small on the truck.
I'm really impressed with this new 3.0 turbodiesel. If I ever swap my '18 Silverado in for a new gen, I'd be going for this motor. Not going to lie though, having the Duramax badge on the hood and "Silverado" badging on the upper front quarter panel looks way too busy. I'd be removing at least one of them ...
I am so happy to see an inline 6 again though so cool

As always, you guys are amazing. Thanks for the info. I priced out, online, a GMC Denali crew long bed with the diesel. It was very competitively priced against Ford with its diesel and comparable price to the seam with its Hemi/assist engine. It will be interesting to see what Rams diesel numbers next year. I’m going to have to buy either at the end of 19, or sometime in 20 because of tax guidance. I have to buy the 6’ or longer bed with a GVRW >6000’ to receive the maximum tax value. I can’t justify a 3/4 ton so these heavy 1/2 tons really are a great option
Oh yeah that’s going to fun to tune on this

@@magnacartasamadams8189 really sucks because I was looking forward to that diesel, but after looking at the design and videos with the engineers explaining the engine uts going to be a freaking nightmare to fix anything just like the powerstroke and duramax v8 diesels. I'll stick to my titan xd Cummins. It's super easy to get to the injectors and fuel rail, tons of space to change belts and other accessories as well, and you can reach behind the engine and touch the transmission bolts! You can see all the way through to the ground. Very simple layout and doesnt have shit flying everywhere under the hood like the powerstroke and duramax. I almost didnt even consider this truck just because of it being a v8 after seeing the nightmare under the hood of ford and gm and how you have to remove the cab to work on them. This thing almost looks like a gas burner under the hood. If I need more power or towing capacity I'll get a Ram just for the Cummins.

I'm not a truck guy, but there's something about a red pick up truck that draws me in.
So does Auto start/stop get overridden based on oil temp? Last thing you would want is coming to a stop sign/light after a long pull and have the oil stop circulating through the turbo. I get that for a few seconds it's not the end of the world, but how many people are going to think or remember to manually override start/stop while towing? Seems like something that should exist to extend the life of the turbo. They were boasting the idle time on the 3500 diesel to let the turbo cool, hopefully similar ideas made it through to the 1500 division.
I bathed in a tub of diesel once, felt great and my skin was silky smooth for months.

Damn these manufacturers are making it difficult with regards to 3.0 liter diesels. The consumer can't really go wrong between any of the three.

Truly don’t think it’s worth it. Far more expensive to buy. Fuel is more expensive. You don’t get good enough economy. And way too much on a modern small diesel to go wrong. The cons hugely outweigh the pros.

@@cjeam9199 Well Diesel cost's about the same or cheaper than 89 octane where i live. Also i get 700+ miles to a tank (26 gallon) I average over 33 mpg all day long, which is way better than gas motors. But to each their own. I'm glad all 3 are going to battle with these, it only makes them better.
Any upcoming vidoes on the new JL y'all purchased ?
Is there a big fuel tank option? When towing, a larger tank is desirable!

diesels generally last longer & are more reliable even if it's turbocharged, although the maintenance will be expensive if it breaks
Are you guys able to record your driving impressions during these events and then publish that part of the video later?
Finally, now do a run-off, head to head comparison with the other two 1/2T diesels from Dodge & Ford. Also, can u get it with a goose-neck setup in the bed (like the Nissan XD)??
In a recent video Andre and Mr.Truck established that if you have to tow less than 10,000 lbs a half-ton is enough for the job, any more and you may want to consider a SD/HD. This duramax fits nicely below 10,000lbs and it makes me wonder how the Ram Ecodiesel will perform at full load above 10,000lbs. Can the Ram chassis handle it?
@jeffwill4923

Ram max numbers are based on a Tradesman 4x2. Once you load it up with options tow numbers will drop similar to GM.

And TFL only towed a short 18ft horse trailer loaded to 9k pounds most people that get these don't tow that kind of setup, they tow like a 8-10k travel trailer that's pushing 32-35ft and let me tell you they tow the same weight COMPLETELY different when one is almost double the length. These trucks can't handle those kinds of trailers which is what you see them towing in the real world they get pushed around by cross winds. Trust me I know I had a 8300lb dry 36ft travel trailer about 10k loaded and pulled it with my silverado 1500 rated for 11k pounds and even with air ride air bags and weight distribution and anti sway the trailer pushed me all over going down i95 with some crosswinds. Needless to say I traded that truck for a duramax 2500 and never had the issues of being pushed around in wind again. It's funny how they always tow smaller trailers that weigh alot rather than long campers that still weigh alot because the smaller the trailer the smaller the "sail" even with the same weight a small trailer even loaded at 9 or 10k pounds will be just fine with a 1500 nowadays but not 32ft+ travel trailers that still fall within the weight rating of these trucks. It's really misleading.

@@brandonmoore9440 Ah... interesting, the length of trailer is indeed an important factor but is often never discussed. I think TFL's uses the smaller trailer because water is very heavy and that's what they fill those totes with.
8:41 "What!?!" Best part!
Andre any word if the diesel will get some of the new thermal management technologies the new 2.7 4cly Turbo (gas) did? Such as the electric water pump and water jacketed exhaust manifold for quicker warm ups in wintertime?
Can they make these things affordable now? Getting a diesel usually means stepping up into a top trim, where a work engine diesel makes no sense. Need a base trim, max tow package with the diesel in 4x4 (crew cab preferred so 4 adults can ride to one work site together). That would be about perfect for a work/farm truck.
@jeffwill4923

Ram is the only one of the group with a base trim. GM has diesel on two trim levels. Ford recently changed their trim pack offering but still no base model.
Straight 6 Diesel is perfect from an engineering standpoint. Much more efficient than a v6 should run 400k miles but time will tell. Still wouldn’t pay $60k but I’d throw the engine in my Tahoe.
The max towing doesn't really bother me but the low payload does. It would have been nice to have a 2200 pound payload for the new 1/2 ton class fifth wheels.
I personally like my 5.3V8 considering I average 20mpg. It's a huge improvement from my i4 Hyndai Sonata (2006) that somehow got only 16mpg. Plus the engine sounds very nice and I drive mostly highways
