In 1972 my cousin bought a Honda CL 350 and I bought a Honda CB350. We rode on and off road, including 70 mph on the freeway from Galveston to Texas. We didn’t know they were little bikes. We just had fun. I would have a new 500 CL. Hondas are bullet proof.😎👍

A high school buddy invited me to meet he and some college friends in New Orleans in 1973. I was in college in Nacogdoches, TX. I had hair to my shoulders and planned to ride my CB 350. Then I went to see Easy Rider at the theater. And decided, maybe not! I’ve never been to New Orleans.😎
Great job by honda. I think it is essential to keep on offering low cost options for bikers. A little 500cc commuter bike is perfect for commuting. It looks really good and I'm sure the aftermarket is going to provide some customization to make it look even more retro.

The cc, the price and the classic design are just about right. This is looking great for a daily commuter.
Back in the 70s in the Los Angeles suburbs, 500s were the bikes to have: enough power for the freeways and to ride the girls around. This model should help attract younger people into motorcycling.

just bought a 2022 cb500f kinda wish i waited for this beautiful machine.
I wish the tank design didn’t have the angle so it would look closer to CL’s of the 1970’s. That said I get why they did it as it’s based on the CMX500
I see this and hope they will make a CL750 from the hornet. I’d buy that.
Yeah, Tim got the better trip. Great podcast today, good review. 👍🤪🇨🇦
Not bad, rode a 500X for 18 months, super little engine and economical too. This should sell well. I bet the aftermarket exhaust manufacturers are rubbing their hands together...

Looking at the options on Honda's website, you can only get one soft pannier on the left. A 2into1 exhaust might give enough room to get another tucked under the end can.

As a new older rider (older new rider?) (CBT two months ago) This caught my eye at Motorcycle Live. Definitely worth a further look, whether or not I feel comfortable on something bigger after having passed Mod2. I was happy with height and sitting position (I'm 5'7" - 5'8") and that is about all I could really comment on.
Beautiful looking bike, rally version plus a good exhaust and some luggage and it's perfect for me
I love Honda CL500 so much❤❤
Do you know I Like it! Nice one Bob
I liked a different concept that was more retro and true to the original 305 / 450 scramblers.
Appears to be a great commuting and running around town bike. Just wish it looked a little more like my 1974 CL.
It's beautiful even the color
This thing looks great in my opinion.
Yes! Call me crazy, but I've been waiting for a style like this slightly smaller than the Z650RS or XRS 700. Just may be my next bike.
As much as I love Honda, I own one myself, this just don't feel right, I love the whole rebel lineup but something about this is just messing with my mind, it looks like they have cut the rebel in half and fixed the front end with another bike that does not fit together. I know it'll perform just fine but man it looks odd.
It's beautiful!

One of my favorite bikes was my 1984 Honda VT500FT Ascot. Perfect weight (light enough) with a 6 speed so great on highway too. Loved using it on dirt paths, backroads and highways. This sounds like it may be close to as nice as that bike. I can't wait to see this at the dealership.

Amazing bike, finally a scrambler that looks like my Ducati Urban Enduro from 2016. Might be an option for my daily commute, unfortunately only 500cc. And of course, let's see if Honda brings it to Brazil
definitely my 2023 or 2025 bike.
I have seen it and it looks way, WAY better in person.
It's really good looking. I wasn't sure Honda was going to do it, but they did it. Not as nice as some of the speculative photo shop renderings, but still a well balanced looking package. Tiny misses: no upswept pipes, no center stand, shorty *useless front fender, no skid plate, they didn't use the analog dash that's on their CL350 H;Ness selling in India, and no color on the bike except the gas tank. But it's a darn good start.
@chrisford9237

A lukewarm effort on Honda’s part. Not that I’m dissing the idea of a 500 scrambler, but the “retro” design looks like the other Honda cruisers in their lineup. The only detail that pays homage to the original CL’s is the upswept pipe. I think the renderings coming out of Japan were much more exciting, ie. the gas tank design and color scheme taken from the 70’s, and that twin upswept exhaust was to die for. I think Honda missed out on the opportunity to make this new model really stand out. This is not an homage to the CL’s of the past, but a lightly massaged version of the 500 Rebel. A great idea on paper, but a bit of a disappointment in light of all the other successful retro models being offered now. 🤔😒
Not everyone wants a sport bike, ADV, or cruiser. This looks FUN. Looks very industrial/Mad Max especially in black. Or a Rebel with a flat seat and taller rear shocks would be 2/3s of the way there.
If they have a CL1100 or CL650(inline 4) or CL750 (new 270 degree crank) in the works then I would be more interested. Hopefully they have a bigger brother in the pipeline to come out soon.
Since I bought my cb500x I wished for a retro ish scrambler version... Here it is.! The cb500x is faultless, so this is just a style choice and hopefully more customisable.
I’m 5’8’ and can flatfoot both feet on my CB500F which I really like. This bike I’d add a set of knobbies and a high front mudguard. The green is a very nice colour.

@@MrAndrew1953 Wow! That's saying something, because my 500 is a blast in the twisties. I like the scrambler looks. I wonder can you get panniers for it even with that high exhaust. So many great bikes out there these days. What do you think of the new Hornet 750? It looks very much like a beefed up Cb500f which is on bad thing in itself. It might make a natural successor to my 500 when the time comes, just that bit more power for motorway riding, and I saw somewhere it comes with a six year guarantee.
@MrAndrew1953

@@martinrea8548 I wouldn’t bother with panniers as it would stop you from filtering through traffic. I’d just get a top box. If possible I’d get an aftermarket can that would save even more weight. Build the bike along BMW Urban GS lines - set of knobbies and a high front mudguard.

Any chance they’ll be available in N.America ?
Nice
Nice to have options, but did they need another 500 option. Like the Rebel 1100 too much, which in my opinion is lacking eye appeal.
I have been waiting for this Honda CL500 and it looks nice except that enormous exhaust probably to comply with the EU Buro-Craps. The exhaust of the prototypes looked so much better. I live in Thailand where we have tarmac roads and loose shingle roads so this Honda CL500 would make sense. Saying that, the Honda CB300R actually does that job well.
I was deciding on the cb300r as my first.. now I see this haha
The exhaust ruins the look imho. I was hoping this would be a reliable alternative to the Svartpilen 401 but I'm not feeling it. Will need aftermarket parts to make it look like it should.
I like it.
I want one! I have a CB 500 X 2022, but I like the classic styling oh so much. I am gonna ask my Honda dealer how to get this bike as quick as I can!
The exhaust (and the bike in general) looks like it is inspired by the original CL350 from the 1960s and 70s. One of the original scramblers.
Too low to be a true scrambler, very fashionable and cool looking for a tour around the towns though. The best scramblers out there right now are hands-down the Husky's Svartpilens. RE's 411 while not overpowered handles the off roads nicely and is a great back road bike for those not in a hurry, super affordable and well made. I bought one myself, it's just too fun. Price tag on this fashion show from Honda is a wee bit too high and the practicality for being a scrambler too low. If you are looking to get a scrambler, definitely give RE's 411 a ride and the Husqvarna Svartpilen a round.
I'd eliminate the catalytic converter and the whole section of pipe on the underside of the bike and route it straight back from the manifold to where it terminates now. That'd free up some clearance and keep you from mangling the pipe and cat if you scraped bottom.
I was alaways attracted to the Rebel 500 but put off by the riding position/low seat. The CL500 may well replace my 390 Duke as my second bike. 191 kg isn't heavy but for a 471cc bike, it isn't light.
I’m curious if Honda will come out with a CL1100 😊
What have they done to the exhaust?!
i can't see where the CL500 fit into. For off road, there's the CB500X, For city / street, there's the naked CB500F. For sports, there's CBR500R. For cruising, we have Rebel 500. So who is the CL500 for? Is it gaining new market or just taking away from their other models? Looking at the meter and tank, it's like a higher rebel, but still with that cheapo meter and the hideous mating gap of the tank to the frame.
That little engine is definitely an engineer's machine, goes pretty well wherever you need it to. Looks good in the CL, pity it's going to sound like the CB & CMX nuts&bolts in a muffled can......
If my finances allow any large purchases next Spring I will be looking for this bike at my local dealer.
Take advantage of this bike basically a highten Rebel 500, some adjustments and you have a Harley Davidson Street 750
Nice, will make a great little back lane and green lane bike. The RE is too low power, it's like getting a piggy back from an asematic
Interesting looking bike there. Not sure of the exhaust though… only thing that spoils it.
why is that exhaust so up? Won't it burn the pillion Rider's leg?
When will it comme to canada market
This would’ve been my perfect beginner bike.
I'd love something like this but 1000cc and with a DCT
This bike is the culmination of the past 10 years: not too sport, not too off-road, not too fast, not too slow, not too touring, not too commuting, not too expensive, not too cheap, not too big, not too small, not too hipster, not too “biker”, not too ugly, not too beautiful, not that exciting, not a rebel. Honda have done it…absolute motorcycling nirvana. Balance in every aspect.
Honda are creating awesome new bikes.
It’s a good thing my dealer can’t get a rebel 1100 DCTN… Because it gives me more time to decide between that, and now this…

Nice Bike, but in Florida it is almost twice as expensive to insure as the Honda CB500X, The Triumph Tiger 660, and the Yahmaha MT07 all of the same year. I've clalled 3 different Insurance companies and all 3 gave similar rates but no one could explain why the least expensive bike was so expensive to insure.
I've been waiting (it seems forever) for this bike to come out and I really wanted to love it (and buy it); however, Honda did it AGAIN. Another over-weight bike with a tiny fuel tank. For me, it's a total FAIL. I bet it will sell well, though.
I want one.
I Hope it will launch in Indonesia🥹
feels a little half-assed, but it does look nice with honda accessories shown on some of the eicma display bikes
Everybody gripes about the radiator on the BSA Gold Star. Well, look at that Honda. LOL
Wish it had a little more off-road capability. Hopefully at least skid plate will be easily installable. Also disappointed with LCD screen, but didn't expect anything else.
One big fault... where the ignition was located...makes a huge problem if you fit a sensible fuel tank(only 12litres standard), apart from that, wire spoked wheels,re-route the exhaust, a sumpguard, it's a bike to take you RTW...tank is the main issue, due to the key/steering lock location!
@jmo2752

These engines are exceptionally economical, with people regularly reporting 70-80mpg as long as you're not trying to push motorway/freeway speeds... that would give this bike a range in the region of 200 miles before you'd need to refill, plenty for most people and a lot more than many other bikes these days...
I overall like the idea behind this CL. In general though I really hate how mfgs are routing exhaust under the chassis totally exposed. I understand they do it to keep heat away from the rider and maybe packaging reasons but it seems like there should be a better way.
