Originally part of a larger commercial space that was subdivided into smaller residential areas, OCRE Arquitetura transformed an open plan empty shell into a cosy, comfortable urban studio with an integrated living, sleeping, and dining area. Striking forest-green doors and a slatted green panel mask a full-length wardrobe and a retractable bed, revealing extra storage space and a small reading bench when extended. Custom joinery separates the compact kitchen from the living space, while a built-in plywood desk and overhead shelf visually unify and lengthen the apartment. Complementing the colourful green walls are reddish-orange cabinetry in the bathroom, adding pops of colour amongst the minimalist wooden and grey palette. By efficiently maximising space, the original open layout has been transformed into an intimate respite in the middle of vibrant Southern Brazil.

If there was one thing I would change about the living space, it would be the kitchen lighting. The bathroom has a window and shares a wall with the kitchen. Is it possible to create an opening in the wall to allow natural light to brighten the narrow kitchen space? This would significantly improve the overall atmosphere. Apart from that one change, the space is good!

I've seen similar ideas but having an open window between the bathroom and the kitchen wouldn't be sanitary. The smell alone would be a huge bother, plus the crossover of bacteria in the air between the two spaces...

@@isabelasiqueira5405 Not "open" as rotatable, "open" as light. Any other way would be distasteful, unpleasant, or even loathsome...Perhaps I needed to clarify more(?). Therefore, I don't think my comment was in the "similar Idea" category. Still, I also didn't think an in-depth explanation was necessary as we Are discussing Design concepts, so now I believe I have. Thanks.

This would have been a perfect space to put in some glass bricks in two rows from floor to ceiling with maybe some sliding thing/curtain to cover them if someone feels uncomfortable using the bathroom, although you could choose pretty opaque ones so nothing would be visible.

This is one of my faves. It's a clean, classy, and beautiful design. I love the texture on the back of the hideaway bed. it creates visual interest without overtaking the space. I love the cutouts on all the colored wood cabinets too. I also really love how compact and utilitarian the kitchen is. I'm sure it's personal preference but I don't like seeing apartments that look a cooking space with a spot to sleep. This looks like a living space with a spot to cook. well done!

My thoughts exactly! The entry landing area has a lot of unused space and a part of that can be used to extend the kitchen or add storage. This design seems to have very limited storage especially for a female occupant. You have to remove the portable stove just to free up some prep space. The living room seems to have un-optimized space with those boxy wooden chairs. Those look like park benches and seem very uncomfortable, so they appear more as visual elements more so than functional elements. What friends would want to sit on those? The middle divider wall could have been thickened, so you can store more than just brooms on one-side and have maybe a build-in entertainment storage on the other side.

But the space is available and it is empty. And the person who lives there looks like he/she cooks every day, judging by how many condiments there are and the fact that he/she has a custom-built cutting board.

Swap the bathroom and kitchen locations, take down the wall in between new kitchen and living room area, no wall separating the two - just a short kitchen counter with stools (yup, swing has to go), enlarge window to new kitchen, replace floor with something lighter with no distracting pattern. imho.

I suppose it is once again what the client wanted, and thus well done for such a small space! I would have connected the living room space with the kitchen by placing some kind of bar with a few stools, with storage below. I would have placed the "utility wall" near the entrance to give a bit more privacy when main door is opened. I agree with the others who mentioned that the big wooden chairs look too big for the place and too uncomfortable.

I love the overall design - well, I don't LOVE it, but since the owner specifically wanted to maximize living room at the expense of other areas, I think it makes sense. And I love the green wall and the overhead shelf. But all of the furniture is so square-edged and doesn't look comfortable and inviting; one of the chairs is literally just wood.

It's very simple and sensible, I like it. It kind of reminds me of the hitorigurashi apartments in Japan that are designed for singles/students/transfer workers temporarily living in a location for their company. I feel like this is a design that could easily be 'mass produced' for apartments in high density areas where people want to live alone, affordably, and in walkable neighbourhoods. That's not a criticism, I think there's a real space for that type of design - a lot of the housing in that niche lacks dignity and comfort, and this really does provide all of that.

I realise that because of budget constrains they left the bathroom space as is. But I would have switched the kitchen and bathroom. Much nicer to be in the kitchen with the views and light. You live more in the kitchen than bathroom. Also that's a huge bathroom for a small space. I'm also surprised how high they made the bathroom floor. The step is huge.

It’s very sweet and nice. The only thing bothering me are the two wooden chairs. They seem like too much. Especially because the swing and the office table chair are also there. Removing the two wooden chairs would result in a more open space. Giving a feeling of more space and having a free area where u can move. If you have friends over they can just sit in the swing, or on the sofa.

The current design is fine but not optimal. s one looks into the kitchen (from the entry door) there really should have been a clerestory horizontal window installed near the ceiling to allow light into the kitchen. Personally, I would have switched the kitchen and bedroom and added a movable kitchen island with seating. There might have been a problem with venting from the kitchen or running pipes for water/drainage but that was not mentioned.

I love the design of this small space and how functional it is. The only thing I would change is to add a dining table next to the wall when the bed is not in use. Something attached to the wall that folds down when needed then lays flat when not in use. The folding chairs could be stored in the closet when not in use. Then you would have a dining table for meals and entertaining.

While I like the use of the space as a whole, I'm a bit sad by the lack of lighting (natural or otherwise) in the kitchen. I feel as though the broom closet might have been better-placed behind the front door and the things mounted on the wall there now might have been mounted on the closet doors, or perhaps just abutting that closet space into the kitchen's side-panel facing the front door. Instead of the broom closet wall there might have been space for either a narrow counter top hanging out a bit into the living room, with some stools beneath for seating, or instead of that a sort of privacy fence affair with alternating slats mounted on an internal wooden frame to provide a division, but also some sun from the living room.

Such as what other professionals does the architect contact for this job, cost of materials and labor, and the time it takes to complete. That way people can be more informed when they approach a designer to help them with a project of their own. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!

Straight forward solutions, well done for that space. However, I prefer more natural light penetrating the kitchen as many others suggest in the comments, so I would think of swapping the sofa with the TV. It would allow me to take down most of the wooden wall holding the TV and just leave a wooden border as high as the sofa, this way no visual disruption happens while watching TV and the kitchen is just as bright.

Decently high ceilings, could have raised the floor for storage/partitioning

Those armchairs are too bulky for small spaces

Pas rapport à l aménagement de certains appartements vus sur NTS, celui ci est en retrait. Avoir un lit permanent, une cuisine un peu plus grande et plus de rangement me semble nécessaire pour y vivre à l année.

Interesting design in a compact space. The kitchen looks a little small but efficient. Not sure about the comfort or the aesthetic of the custom designed armchairs.

I wonder if the client has not gone blind by now from having so much light in his face while trying to work from home on a laptop I presume, light should come from the sides , not from the front or back. Form over function, the rest of the layout is quite nice.

I'm single and live alone and even though this apartment has everything you need, this is too small for me. Props to anyone who lives in less than 500sq ft!

I'm from Russia and the most of people which I know live in a such small spaces with their families. For me all flats from this channel are big and luxurious. I grew up in 33 sqm one room flat with my mom, dad and sister. Now I am going to live in 40 sqm two rooms flat with my husband and son. Such flats are small only for people of first world
